Hi, I'm Rigo, and work as some sort of IT guy to work for a major cable/internet company in Mexico. Think of it as Comcast minus most of the evil. Previously I worked as on site tech support for ATM machines around the city (mostly in tiny convenience stores) and I fix computers on the side. This is a small collection of stories from all three of this. All true, some exaggerated for dramatic effect.

I was recovering from new year's eve when I got a call, they needed me to check on an ATM. Thinking back this lady must have been in the same mindset.
Picture this, the outside shell of the atm is open and a guy with a screwdriver and a serious bitch face is practically swimming in cables. This lady missed a perception check and decided to stand in line while I was working the machine.
Ten minutes (since I noticed her) pass. She asks me if I am using the ATM. Obviously I said yes.
Ten more minutes pass. By that time I had gone back to concentration mode when she asked me if I was gonna take long "Yes, it might be a while"
Yet ten more minutes pass. lady is tapping her shoe impatiently. She asks me what I am doing. Now, while I dont get paid for customer service, I try to be friendly. But I was hungover, lady was doing that thing I hate when you break my concentration.
"I am fixing it is out of service" I said, in not my friendliest tone, while pointing at the out of service sign on the front.
"Why didn't you tell me?!" and she stomped off, indignant.

Now this is from Cable company rides. My job usually entails fixing wifi or internet problems, but its in the job description to help sort out computer problems as long as I dont open equipment on company time or void any warranties. Also the visit descriptions can be, and usually are, pretty vague. So when I read that this family cant use the internet on their computer it must be a wifi issue.
In this case the computer was probably just slightly younger than I am, and running windows 95. I had to manually install the ethernet adapter and get internet explorer to run. Still they could not watch the youtube videos they wanted at the resolution and speed they wanted, but all things considered I did the best it could be done.
Also, told them they should probably donate that desktop to a museum.

Ok, so this old lady had a fairly used desktop too. And she could not see her Pedro Infante videos on youtube. So I turn it on, and it boots really slow. Like, really slow. And then come the ads. You know which ones. She turns tomato red. I open the browser, more ads. And the systems antivirus just patrolling merrily about, not catching any of the vulgarity dancing around on the whole screen. So, it was as simple as running safe mode, installing an actual antivirus (for reference I use malware bytes) uninstall all the other adware and reboot. She was quite happy and became of on my regular customers.

Now, this happens way more often than it should. Sometimes is as Innocent as the nice homeowner sharing the family's wifi with a neighbor, who then shares it with another and another and another. And sometimes it is a neighborhood hacker wannabee that steals a password and also passes it around, after locking out the neighbor. And since poor mexican homeowners dont know how to change a password I get to come in.
Most extreme case, I had to use a MAC address whitelist to only allow access to the family's computers/phones to the network. Which, in my mind, is bullshit.

And this is my favorite story. It was a routine call. Fix internet, install wifi extender. Everyday stuff. What wasn't everyday was being greeted by the family pet pig. Named nacho. After being awakened from his slumber by my rude work noises, he inquired about my identity and introduced myself, then after having a light snack went right back to sleep. I did not know pigs where so polite.

Pig tax. This was the aforementioned Nacho. If you guys enjoy this I will upload more stories as soon as they happen/I remember them.

'she could not see her Pedro Infante videos on youtube' but it sounds like she saw her paedo infante videos just fine...

Why can’t I watch youtube in 1080P? Well for starters, your screen resolution is set to 800x600.

Dude this is fucking awesome. I don't work in the tech field but I do auto-body and mechanic stuff so I know how stupid people are sometimes

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Well, I would not say stupid as much as technologically deaf. The bigger brunt of this cases are in outer zones where poorer folks live.

Except from the Atm lady, she was just blind

For real, what is up with everyone having like an 18 digit password for wifi??

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Its the one that comes as a default with the modem itself. Most people are not savy enough or are otherwise unable to change it

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, basically everyone! Every house ive gone to is a pain in the ass to get their wifi password

@Mexicohere so not to sound rude or anything, but how is it that in a “corrupt” country like Mexico, a cable provider isn’t corrupt?
