Technically not a selfie.
This is me at my first fighter practice. Fighter practice? Fighter practice. Within the SCA (Or Society for Creative Anachronism for you... long winded people). Which, as you will see, is not just dressing up like period medieval folk and running around shouting "HUZZAH." Most people picture that, but what people come to spectate is this!
The trash can is period.
Next to me is a Duke. My first night I was taken in by experienced knights (Knights who have fought and trained to become knights, because you can't just be a knight). Jack is the Duke's name, the two guys in front are some other fighters. Yes, those are spears!
For those wondering, that helmet weighs about 10 pounds. It is all steel, and the armor you see is all real. Hardsuit combat is full contact. Everything above and knees and elbows is legal to strike and results in "wounds" or "death."
When I first showed up I thought it was wicked cool to hear myself and everyone around me clank when we walked. Still my favorite part.
Sir Duncan, the only person there that was my height! If you look you can see his shield is held differently from mine. It's what is called a "centerboss," I am using a heater shield. The main difference being that a heater is strapped to your arm and centerboss is held by the hand at the center of the shield. This is primarily what the vikings used. You have a lot more range of movement with a centerboss. Unfortunately, it's also heavy to wield if you have noodle arms like me and if you're new, the tendency is to throw it all over the place to block shots which leaves you open to attack.
Two of our spearmen. You can see the different pieces of armor worn here. A helmet, gorget (keeps your neck from being squished), chest protection in the form of plates or lamellar, gauntlets, etc.
Jeans are totally period.
On the right is my Lord, with the dragons on his shield. He took me in and appointed me Man at Arms. He is training me to be an effective swordfighter. What he doesn't know is I secretly chose him and puppydogged till he gave in. He has mastered footwork, in-your-face fighting, and this offhand leg shot that makes you want to curl up and die. This is primarily due to all the real life combat he did in the Marines...
See how he's standing there with his guard down? He does that to everyone. I fought next to him at Estrella war and it was spectacular to watch the spearmen look at him like "what, are we going now?" Yes. And now you're all dead!
For reals he doesn't stop charging the front line.
Alright so this is a selfie but I'm displaying my armor. I made that, it's called lamellar. Plate was expensive and difficult to forge, so they made these tiny plates instead and laced them together. This was about 2 weeks worth of work. Also pictured is my gorget!
Did I mention Estrella War? Yeah, this is it. 500 fighters on our side, 500 on theirs. My Lord and I fight with the Thirteen, and we were on the front lines. My Lord and I frequently charged the spearmen on the front line to disrupt and open up their defenses for an attack from our side. It hurts tho. You charge full bore into 5 six foot tall guys, shield over your head, and they all reach over the top and beat you with their swords until you fall.
And yeah, you fall. Curl up under your shield and protect your legs and ribs, you WILL be stepped on.
More combat. It looks like chaos because it is. But sometimes it's strategic.
And yes it is full contact. I don't wear armor on my bottom.... I will soon. This is one of three strike I received in the same day.
Learn to block!
It wasn't very chock full of info but if you guys want more details on how it works, different parts of armor and rules, let me know! I love this sport and the camaraderie it involves. I've made so many friends and it's the only place I've genuinely enjoyed going to for fighting (I've done boxing, kung fu, etc...). I have learned so much and I am still learning. I can't wait until one day I have the skill to match these guys!
EDIT** Alright obligatory FP edit time. I appreciate the support you guys, and all the questions have been amazing! The number one question I have gotten has been how to get involved. So I'll make a little thing here.
GETTING INTO IT:
First, go to the SCA website and locate your kingdom. Kingdoms are big, overarching things that contain what are called baronies.
Next, find your barony. A barony a piece of the Kingdom. You want to find the region closest to you. They usually have websites and facebook pages, you'll find the marshal's information there.
Find out when they hold fighter practice. For instance in Phoenix, Kingdom of Atenveldt, Barony of Atenveldt, we hold fighter practice at 8pm-10pm on Tuesday nights at Coronado Park. During the fall months we hold fighter practice at Encanto Park.
Contact the marshal! They are more than happy to direct you and let you know about the rules. In addition if you let them know you're coming, they'll likely have loaner gear ready for you to wear so you can try it yourself! IMPORTANT! You will need a cup (males AND females)!
Get involved! There's more to the SCA than just fighting. The arts and crafts are amazing. I personally do leatherwork, some woodwork, sewing, etc. Try it! It's a blast, the community is incredibly welcoming and generous, and they love curious new folks!
ARMOR:
The next biggest question was about armor. I'll make a new post about that because it's a lot to explain here to get yourself geared up!
Post is up! http://imgur.com/a/yOUmY
WEAPONS:
Primarily made of rattan or polycarb and follow very specific rules. You are not limited to swords and spears. There are glaives, axes, knives, bow, experimental weapons, siege weapons etc. One of my fav stories is of one of our combat archers. She wields a bow. When she was charged one time she threw her bow down and whipped out a dagger she'd hidden. Now, typically combat archers yield when swordsmen get too close. She did not and took them by surprise, and killed a whole bunch of them before they finally got her!
Literally dagger up the sleeve!
FIGHTING, REAL TECHNIQUES?:
Yes and no. SCA combat has a lot of modification involved. Organizations like HEMA are more historically accurate. However, it's not all bashing people with sticks and there is real techniques from ye olden days of fighting involved (Such as flat snaps, offhands, etc). These guys have real skill and before I experienced it firsthand, I too thought it was a bit "bashy with sticky". My Lord especially made me realize that the technique and footwork are what make a difference in your combat. Anybody can swing a stick. Knights know how to do that and make you wonder where the hell it came from and why you're looking up at the night sky.
EDIT 2*** I totally forgot to mention events and personas.... errr.
genericanimehero
Yeah go SCA. My father was in a Kingdom in his college days when he met my mother. he still has line on a rib that didn't heal correctly.
Sqwuid
Lol most of the guys have an injury that didn't heal quite right xD
Locharoundtheclock
Estrella war is my favorite part of the year. I've been going since I was a baby.
mralterboy
A long time ago when I was in the sca I borrowed my friend's helm, named "the bell". Pretty sure that's where I lost half of my hearing. 1/2
Sqwuid
HAHAHAA! Yeah I still get that. It rings like a bell! You can hardly hear it tho if you're laughing manically
mralterboy
Turns out, he used to work on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier so he couldn't hear anything already.
Iamtheburritoqueen
@Sqwuid what kingdom are you in? I'm over in AnTir! It's nice to see an SCA post here!
Sqwuid
Atenveldt! Hello sister! Or brother... BurritoQueen? Anyway, that's why I posted it. :) I thought imgur would like.
gr8snd
Are you at Pennsic?
Sqwuid
No I couldnt make it this year, too much going on. But I want to go next year :)
Asherra84
Hey i think I recognize your armor! I was at Estrella, What kingdom are you from?
Sqwuid
Atenveldt :) and sweet! Maybe we squared off! message me and I'll send you my facebook page :)
Asherra84
I don't fight but I do water bare^_^
Sqwuid
And we appreciate you so much! We get so sweaty and dehydrated, you guys keep us going. There'd be no fighting without you!
NeganSmash
Please tell me you do this https://68.media.tumblr.com/d357f4a1fabf440f342c8f960cfc1d50/tumblr_inline_orcn6cne6r1trjbtw_540.gif
Sqwuid
FUCK YAH. 99% of the sport is male. You cant tell I'm a girl under my armor. So when my helm comes off all the dudes are like "what a noob."
Sqwuid
Jk. I'm a warrior just like them. Out there, youre not man or woman, youre a fighter. And I garner the same respect as any man.

I just spent about 30 minutes researching SCA and my local groups. So glad I found this!
Sqwuid
Go get em! Feel free to message me if you need help or have questions :)
Senguie
Sounds fun, would like to try rolling like In dark souls would confuse the shit out of anything
Sqwuid
Lol yeah it'll be awkward and in slow mo. There's a process for getting the armor on because bending become a problem xD
RomeoEchoXray
The rolling doesn't help. I checked.
Senguie
Too bad, now I just got the image of someone rolling and getting repeatedly bashed with swords in my head
AnotherUsernameIsTaken
Roll for initiative
Solvedmind
Rolls ankle instead.
tooomanysteves
No, that's D&D
BwordsAndSoobies
Constitution's more important. (The days fighting is followed by an evening of HEAVY drinking... followed by more fighting the next morning)
Sqwuid
[War cry intensifies]
Sqwuid
No flippin way dude FIGHT FOR INITIATIVE GO GO GO
Threeleggedcow
I don't need initiative. I have armor and a big fucking sword!
AmyBernadettePenny
GyroPunk
If you really want to up your game, I'd highly recommend HEMA
Sqwuid
is different from fighting effectively in HEMA :)
Sqwuid
My friend is in that and also in the SCA. He says it's difficult to translate because the style required to fight effectively in the SCA
ElbowDeepInMythicalCreatures
.
DeVyse3202
Awesome! Hope to see you on the Battlefield at Great Western War! Look for the shields with two white stripes!
Sqwuid
I'll keep an eye out! My shield may not be painted yet, so look for the big mirror blinding everyone lol!
DeVyse3202
Hahaha...I fight with Saint Martin's so I will have their shields, if you want to just say hi come find the Inept Engineers!
Sqwuid
Hella cool! I sure will! This one, right? http://army.sca-caid.org/images/units/stmartins.gif
DeVyse3202
That would be the ones! Ser Arion is an awesome guy and he pays well for my camps bolstering services.
Sqwuid
Well I will definitely hunt you guys down then :D can't wait!
Sqwuid
And is that Sir Aerin (I think that's how it's spelled I don't know...) that you recognize from the pictures or somebody you know? :)
CaptainPirate8
Enjoy, used to do this, not sure why I stopped tbh
Isbjorn
No time like the present to get back into it. (He says knowing full well that he himself hasn't been active in years) Huzzah!
CaptainPirate8
Honestly love archery way more and now having had some time to think about it the politics bothered me.
Isbjorn
Yeah im a heavy cas the one time i tried archery even making sure i inspected every arrow i somehow managed to break one nearly lost my eye.
Isbjorn
Luckily i have a tough skull and it was mm in my favour. The politics can be a real drag. Still for much love for the peeps i met though.
NothusDius
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
NothusDius
*and politics. At least that's why I left.
Greyfith
Oh boy the politics. And the 'period whores' who suck the fun out of it.
Greyfith
And the primadonnas who think a light blow in combat equals a kill. I miss being a heavy, but don't miss the drama.
xenjamin
Nice butt
Sqwuid
Thanks! :)
phucket101
Pennsic war. I live about 20 minutes from there. They have some awesome parties at night ????
Sqwuid
FLIP YES. The parties are epic! Have you been yet?
phucket101
Not this year. But I've gone numerous times
thanexitium
Where is this, roughly? I've been dying to find something like this even remotely in my area (Southern Mass, if anyone feels helpful)
dawiggleman
SCA.org you can find a local kingdom and barony to join up!
hedgewizard
Been in since '79. You end up learning so much, not just history and combat, but clothing, brewing and baking, on and on and on.
Sqwuid
It's been a wild experience and there is so much knowledge. I have the privilege of living near Dave Demers too, I want his nordic helm!
hedgewizard
In An Crosaire, we have so many talented craftspeople, and all friendly as hell.
kagrak
You should totally do a post on how you made your armor, that looks super cool. Do you make the weapons too?
Sqwuid
I did :) and my shield. All of it is handmade by myself or another. Next time I make something I will post it up!
cookingviking
+1 for "the trash can is period" awesome post, cool pics.
EnjoyThisGIFofYourUsername
Sqwuid
I adore this
cookingviking
ok +1 for everything honestly. how did you get into this? How do I get into this?
Sqwuid
Find your local fighter practice :) if you need help shoot me a message!
EnjoyThisGIFofYourUsername
cookingviking
thank you!
Cat656
Look for your local group's facebook page, or possible a website. Most places have plenty of room for new people, and you can show up 1/2
Cat656
At a fighter practice and introduce yourself. learning how to fight is great, but it's still a workout!
dawiggleman
The things you find on random mode :) Greetings, I'm Lord Farouk and I hail from the Outlands! (Currently residing in Drachenwald) if you'd
RomeoEchoXray
Outlands!!!
dawiggleman
like to see my armor pics or any tips, just pm me! :D
Sqwuid
Brother! I'd love to see, let me send you a message. Were you at Estrella? :)
WhyIsThisStillEvenAQuestion
I would so totally do this
Sqwuid
Then go for it :) I can help you get any info you need!
jmuije
The SCA is wonderful for the combat and the crafts. And then there's the politics. You ever want to see what someone's really like, 1/2
jmuije
watch them jockey around trying to get favor so they have support to be a make believe baron. I left the SCA because of that bullshit.
RomeoEchoXray
Stick jock 4 lyfe. No name. No device. Still KSCA.
Sqwuid
I ignore it :) there's one in every group lol!
iamtiredofmakingnewusernames
How did the Duke get to be a Duke?
metahacker
Win Crown tourney and be a King for six months; after that you're a Count. Do it twice or more, you're a Duke. (source:25+ yrs in the SCA)
rezpawner
That's not how you become king at all! There's this old bitch in a lake that hands out swords for that stuff. Fucking impostors.
rezpawner
I bet they aren't even nobility. They should be executed for impersonating nobility tbh. Cut their fucking heads off!
ItsARental
As a descendent of Henry VII and the earls of Blackadder I must concur lol
RampantRumpus
In the SCA, Dukes are former monarchs. Kings (and sometimes queens) become so by winning a tournament.
TamiRotten
Hail from Northshield!
Sqwuid
Hail, brother!
Entartika
As a 6'8" guy this would be fun
TechnicalDrift
Shields are less effective, but you get insane reach with a twohander.
jizzyjo
Oh cool. Didn't know The Mountain was on Imgur?!
yeahIamgoing
As a 6'8" guy who does do this, it is fun.
eagleandy93
If I got in shape this would be awesome, as someone who is 6 foot too
Sqwuid
Did you see the fighter standing in front of the duke? Most guys in it are overweight, just endurance training. You can do it!
hedgewizard
There is a HUGE guy in Florida that fights in minimal Hoplite style armor. He's amazing!
Sqwuid
He's nuts!
DeVyse3202
As a 6'8" guy you could do quite well now if you were left handed you would dominate. Lefties are not common
WeReallyShookThePillarsOfHeavenDidntWeWang
6'2" and left handed--can I play?
DeVyse3202
Of course just find a local Fighter Practice on www.SCA.org use kingdom look up to help narrow the search.
tooomanysteves
Yes!
ElbowDeepInMythicalCreatures
6'5" and lefty, any chances I could join?
Sqwuid
Bastards!
AkLonewolf
Lefties are fun. Trained for years with a lefty... also injured my right arm and learned to fight lefty for a year. I'm ambidextrous.
DeVyse3202
I live in the land of the lefties, or at least that is what we call it. I love and hate fighting them, however it is always fun.
GravGunner
Just wear some very proper shin guards. Short folks ALWAYS go for the shins.
IlCastradore
You'd make more target too
B00TYFLAKES
The Mountain fears no one
warslinger
As a short heavy fighter, that matter's very little. Reach and height are why i use a polearm
TheMasterOfTheMechanicalStuff
exactly i thought .
Sqwuid
He can see the tops of our heads, and reach less for wraps. Huge advantage to be tall!
Xanthus179
It's so cool to hear that SCA is still a thing. I was taken to some events when I was really little, but haven't heard of it in years.
Sqwuid
Find an event to go to :) seriously, it gets lodged in your soul :)
swedishmetalhead
Someone tapped that ass... haha ha ha ha... um...
swedishmetalhead
I'll show myself out. Spears won't be necessary
Sqwuid
Spears are always necessary! Lol! But yeah... got tapped... the first time it ever happened I turned my whole body
Sqwuid
He apologized profusely lol!
Sqwuid
The knight was going for a body shot so lots of power. I hobbled off the field in blind pain and dropped to my knees for a second lol!
BangForTheBuck
Your ass sure took a beating. Great stuff. I always regret never trying my hand at armor when I used to smith.
gamlingcs
Having done a cuirass and both lobster/fingered gauntlets. Planishing. so much goddamn planishing.
Sqwuid
What does that mean? :)
gamlingcs
Planishing is a technique for cold-working metal. Basically you have a big round bowl you pound a flat piece into to get curvature.
Sqwuid
Smithing! I so love that stuff, do you have any pics I'd love to see. And why cant you now? No regerts dude!
BangForTheBuck
Nothing overly dramatic. Just functional things.![]()
Khaylain
Nice hammers!
BangForTheBuck
Thanks! That's a chasing hammer and a cross peen
Khaylain
I've done silversmithing, (and a tiny bit of blacksmithing) and it looked familiar. Well made tools are one of lifes pleasures.
BangForTheBuck
It was about 7 years ago. I lost my shop and everything in it. Moved on since then. I made small tools and knives.
Sqwuid
I'm veey sorry to hear you lost your shop :( the knife you just posted is beautiful! You can do it again, if you want :) join the sca!
BangForTheBuck
I live in Trinidad now. In the Caribbean. No smiths here, and not an anvil in sight.
Sqwuid
Sounds like a hole in the market!
Sqwuid
They have tons of smiths and armorers who would be happy to help/lend a forge!
BangForTheBuck
Not where I live, I'm afraid.
tooomanysteves
My first OC post was of a loom I made for an SCA friend:
tooomanysteves
Here it is in use:
Sqwuid
That is fantastic! I've always admired the skill of our craftsmen and women :)
1234canIhavealittlemore
Is it just bashing each other or do you actually train with certain weapons. If yes, is training based on medieval techniques?
tooomanysteves
SCA Lochac here. Yes and yes for us.
GrimRedeemer
SCA Heavy, shown here, don't train with any weapons beyond those (rattan?) sticks of different lengths, sometimes with padding on the end.
GrimRedeemer
SCA cut&thrust, on the other hand, train with steel weapons and some historical technique. Though if you really want that, go HEMA instead.
1234canIhavealittlemore
Ah right, sounds like fun :)
GrimRedeemer
There's nothing intentionally medieval or renaissance about how they fight. Just modern stick-fighting, with vaguely period-looking gear.
RomeoEchoXray
Once you can defend yourself, learning the period stuff becomes more appealing...
Sqwuid
Different weapons still require different techniques tho :) I wanna go handaxe.
AkLonewolf
I have done viking re-enactment for years... All our weapons are blunted steel.
Sqwuid
Sweet! I have a friend that does that up in Oregon!
AkLonewolf
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VM-afOXLBdM it gets real fun in Europe.
Sqwuid
We do use widely known sword techniques, yes. Flat snaps, offhand shots, etc. There is modification for SCA combat tho :)
1234canIhavealittlemore
Sounds good! I used to fence ( very different ). It has given me an taste for decently executed swordwork. Though bashing can be fun too :)
Sqwuid
Well I'm still new so I still treat it like a club lol... but learning :) I've alwasy had respect for the rapier fighters because it looks
Sqwuid
a lot harder than what we do.. A lot more control and like... feeling through the sword. Why'd you stop fencing? :)
Exo594
I was a light fighter. Hand dexterity aside, it's a lot of footwork/movement. But then, was more of a "soul" and "body" than "mind" fighter.
Exo594
Heavy, light and cut+thrust fighters all train with realistic techniques. Heavys use rattan and wear armor, C+Ts use metal longswords
Exo594
and wear specific armor and padding, lights use metal rapiers and wear padding and slightly less armor than C+T. Light armor is designed to
Exo594
protect the neck (gorget) and prevent puncture wounds, rapiers have big rubber blunts on the tips.
