How can you compete with the open road? Road trips are fun, especially when you own a car that is fun to drive. The only reason not to drive is because you want to get there faster (and safer), or save money. Trains are slower, so you're not getting there faster than a car or a plane. That leaves cost as the only reason to take a train, and if they can't compete in that department (as others have implied), how do they even stay in business? By exploiting people's fear of driving and flying?
On a train I can look at other things besides the road in front of me, and I don’t have to stress about other drivers. I can take a bathroom break without the trip stopping. Same for meals. Same for taking time to stand and stretch. I can read, or work on puzzles, or lots of other things besides get stressed and bored while driving. I don’t lose 9-12 hours of travel time when I sleep overnight. My long trips are road trips out of necessity, not for fun.

I think taking a train is more about the experience and comfort than speed. You don't have to deal with smug pedestrians at an airport or take turns driving 200 miles in a car or endure people who take a Greyhound bus.

My one train ride was awful, I had to listen to a child play games super loudly on their iPad for about 6 hours straight while I sat very closely next to somebody i did not know, while watching cars pass the train, Going like 20 mph quicker.
I thought the stereotype was that Italians are pretty lax with time. When I visited Milan last year, everything opened late, kept explaining to my morning person wife that we can't just go to a church at 7am. I guess one thing that has to be on time for Italians is mealtimes and pizza.
