United Airlines flight from Newark
to Sarasota included an all-female flight crew! The scheduling happened organically, but during Women's History Month, the team took the time to celebrate the special moment. The flight was headed up by Captain Gabrielle Harding - the second Black woman Line Check Pilot in the company's history. Only 7% of pilots globally are women and even less are women of color.
This is a step in the right direction for aviation-and we can certainly get on board with that!

It's less common for women to be pilots because most pilot training happens through the military. Yes, you can be trained outside of the military, but it's expensive and hard to get into. So, until women are equally likely to join the military, there will be a discrepancy.

I guess this might be true. But i know 4 male airline pilots and none of them have ever been within sniffing distance of the military. Also know a female private pilot from back in air cadets who got most of her training on that track (at least glider and small single, not sure how far they go).

I'm always torn between the idea that equity should be normal, and calling attention to some diversity effort makes it out of the normal, and that people disenfranchised do need representation to be made a big deal.
but also there was a Scandinavian country that forced equality and found that some genders do just gravitate to certain jobs.
THUS i say.. promote people. Let anyone follow their dream and don't gate or force action based on social expectations or grievance.

Pretty sure it was the 1960's when it was illegal to deny women a credit card on the basis of gender. Now, I was a kid at the time, so maybe there were other factors that still made it difficult?

Everyone, regardless of color, sexual orientation, beliefs etc are all entirely capable of the same things metal tasks. Sure there are extreme examples like genius level intellect or deficiencies (again, can occur in ANY human). I have never been able to grasp the notion to the otherwise. How someone could think sexual organs or skin pigment could make some smarter or less than anyone else.

we've come a long way since the 90s. back then i got looked at weird in some places when i, a brown person, was with my white parents. nowadays it happens a lot less. im under the impression its the same kind of look when a woman holds a non-traditional position for women, just more common for them, considering im at least a guy.

I really want this too. To my knowledge, I'm the 7th woman in my country to do what I do. It would be amazing to have everyone stop acting all surprised that I managed to do this without having a penis. I didn't get into it to be special, but people love to make it a big deal.

Considering most women are NOT colorblind (you can't be a pilot if you are), you would think this would be more common. I was heartbroken when I found out at age 12 that I couldn't be a pilot. So I became an aircraft mechanic out of high school. Was bad timing in 92. Hence why I'm now a tradesman.

Money, it’s fucking expensive to become an airline pilot and if you don’t have a medical reason why you’re not a pilot you can probably attribute it to money. $115 an hour x 1,000+ flight hours needed.

To become a commercial pilot, a private is like 30 hours so not to big of a financial drain

People get loans to pay for flight school. It's too much to be paying out of pocket for the vast majority of people. It's not money.
