Yes, you still want the pounder to force through some dirt so the post is in tight. Also our posts were 6" dia, but you can have 4" too

Based on the easy of insertion I'd say this is some REALLY soft soil so it needs a lot of pile underground to stay upright
Just did this in SW OH on our property. Did 24-36" in the ground, enough to be below frost line

That would do it. We hit a couple boulders that forced the post sideways, but sure beats doing it by hand!
