Back to the future part 2
In promotional material such as Back to the Future Part II Behind-the-Scenes Special Presentation (1989) director, Robert Zemeckis explained that "hoverboards float on magnetic energy". He also added, "they've been around for years, it's just that parent groups haven't let toy manufacturers make them. But we got our hands on some and put them in the movie." He was only joking, of course, but interestingly enough, Mattel (whose logo appeared on the hoverboard props) soon found themselves overwhelmed with callers asking where they could buy one. Although they looked pretty convincing in the movie, the hoverboards were simply wooden props attached to the actors feet. To make the boards fly, the actors were suspended by cables, which were then erased during post-production.
Mad Max: Fury Road
The flame-shooting guitarist is Australian artist/musician Sean Hape, better known as Iota. In an interview on Vice (2013), he said the guitar weighed 132 pounds, and shot real gas-powered flames, which he controlled using the whammy bar.
What Dreams May Come
The "Hell" scenes were shot on the decrepit, rusted hulk of the Essex class aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CV-34). The ship was later sunk to make room for an artificial reef on 17 May, 2006. The "Hell" scenes were shot at the Alameda Naval Air Station in an indoor swimming pool surrounded by blue screen so that the FX could be later added in. Extras spent two 12 hour days in the water as Ghouls.
Batman
Had the Batwing been built to size it would have had a 35 ft wing span.
Poltergeist
During all the horrors that proceeded while filming Poltergeist (1982), only one scene really scared Heather O'Rourke: that in which she had to hold onto the headboard, while a wind machine blew toys into the closet behind her. She fell apart; Steven Spielberg stopped everything, took her in his arms, and said that she would not have to do that scene again
E.T. The Extra Terrestrial
Most of the full-body puppetry was performed by a 2' 10 tall stuntman, but the scenes in the kitchen were done using a 12-year old boy who was born without legs but was an expert on walking on his hands.
Star Wars ep 4
The lightsaber sound effect is a combination of the hum of an idling 35mm movie projector and the feedback generated by passing a stripped microphone cable by a television.
Raiders of the lost ark
The famous scene in which Indy shoots a marauding and flamboyant swordsman was not in the original script. Harrison Ford was supposed to use his whip to get the sword out of his attacker's hands, but the food poisoning he and the rest of the crew had gotten made him too sick to perform the stunt. After several unsuccessful tries, Ford suggested "shooting the sucker." Steven Spielberg immediately took up the idea and the scene was successfully filmed
(Everyone already knows this but its too cool)
Forrest Gump
When Forrest gets up to talk at the Vietnam rally in Washington, the microphone plug is pulled and you cannot hear him. According to Tom Hanks, he says, "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that."
The Dark Crystal
Brian Froud's fascination with lobsters led to many crustacean touches in the design of the film, particularly in the design of the Garthim, the henchmen of the Skeksis.
Hot Shots!
Valeria Golino claims the scene in which she catches an olive popped out of her bellybutton was accomplished without trick photography.
Spiderman
The scene in which Peter Parker catches Mary Jane's lunch on the tray involved no CGI. With the help of a sticky substance to keep the tray planted on his hand, Tobey Maguire eventually (after many takes) performed the stunt exactly as seen.
pisswaterprincess
Aah Poltergeist. Watched it with older friends when I was 9, started crying halfway through, was scared shitless for weeks. Fond memories.
ozzyozzofozz
My grandpa was on the Oriskany back in the day. Maybe we should watch that movie, he'd probably say "hah, yeah it was hell, that's for sure"
PatrickRob82
I remember believing the hoverboard lie as a kid.
MyFaceEyesAreBrownToo
Ok. +1
Micmacdaddywack
No way Tobey, noooo wayyyyy
MightyIink
Always thought they used wires on the tray of food to fall into place, that's impressive.
Idontknowwatiexpected
Dark crystal still gives me the fucking creeps
awesomenachos
Literally watching forrest gump right now
KingDingaLingOfHouseHymenHammer
The Dark Crystal? I KNOW FALLOUT MIRELURKS WHEN I SEE THEM!
MentyAsher
The girl Heather O'Rourke from Poltergeist died in 1988 when she was just 12.
peuxcequeveuxpax
#3 I got to see the USS Oriskany up close before they sunk it off P'cola. It was impressive but sad, the corpse of a fine old warhorse (1)

A whale shark was recently spotted on the "Great Carrier Reef" (it's now an artificial reef/diving spot): https://youtu.be/QoR1_sVKe1s

Part of me still wants a pair of those nikes.

My dad served in the Navy in the mid 60's and was on the Oriskiny! Also that is the ship John McCain took off from before he became a POW

#6 "expert at walking" you say?
HiddenSanity
You try walking on your hands without any legs.
Mewmus
Made that GIF especially for that bit of trivia, thought it was funny as hell
SoPhoKingWong
#8 actually it was just Harrison that had dysentry
HannibalLecturer
Upvoted, but one minor quibble: Spielberg was a producer on "Poltergeist." Your phrasing was slightly misleading, suggesting he directed it.
Mewmus
copied and pasted from IMDB, as are all of the bits of trivia
HannibalLecturer
Oh, I see.
divingin
Oriskany wasn't sunk to make room for a reef; it was sunk to become the reef.
INameMyPetsAfterRedvsBlueCharacters
Yeah that seemed more likely
goosenman
Vic Armstrong (Ford's stuntman) tells a slightly different story about the infamous scene. Though Ford being too ill was part of it.
insilico
Which was?
goosenman
If I recall, it was Armstrong who came up with the idea, allowing them to get it shot super fast.
TheMovieGalaxyQuest
I see Mad Max took some hints from Rammstein.
Cheomesh
FEUR FREI!
wherethewildthingsr
I wouldn't mind holding Kirsten Dunst for a bunch of takes.
xzxw
You literally can't tell me something about Fury Road I don't already know.
shadowbanmeagain
Before every take Charlize Theron put sand in her vagina to give her that extra edge.
xzxw
We both know that's not true.
redhotsilipeppers
I always wondered what Forrest said in that scene; Forrest Gump has to be one of the best films ever made
thetallestninja
It seems to me he's talking longer than it would take to say just that bit.
yamahsaurusRex
Great movie. But, have you ever thought about how fucked it would be if Forrest had been a party boy and Jenny was..."special"?
mostlyherejusttofap
awww, what the fuck man?! thanks :(
redhotsilipeppers
Nope, and now I am sad :(
Boomgoesthedynamites
So I guess the Dark Crystal was the inspiration for mirelurks?
Imblr
Nope i thought the exact same thing when I saw it i was like holyshit sooo mirelurks
OpticalRings
Ed.....ward...
TemporaryUzername
as if you didn't read that from the wiki:
Boomgoesthedynamites
Well excuse me that I didn't read the wiki about Mirelurks
TemporaryUzername
what I meant is that I think you already knew, and you're lying. you're excused.
Boomgoesthedynamites
I actually didn't I just saw the uncanny resemblance
TemporaryUzername
i like how many people are following this drama, though. no?
Imblr
Or just the fact that they look exactly like mirelurks even how they move
randolphjcarter
There's no way that olive scene is real.
SoPhoKingWong
Don't believe most of these. There's inaccuracies in em. Inc Indiana jones
mynameisdrew
Her whole torso is a prop and only her head and hands are real
d65vid
To be fair, he just said it didn't involve trick photography
bigstacks
I bet her catching it is real, there was probably some device to launch it.
Corrodias
That would be rather gross, anyway. Navels are not clean places.
JustTheFactsMan
Her "body" was actually a prop. BUT no CGI was used, so she told the truth.
Mewmus
maybe she was simply upside down when it was filmed.
xhirro
I think that counts as trick photography.
shimmernshine
That would count as trick photography. The launch itself is engineered.
bitemark
Her 'stomach' is fake, I'd bet. It looks rigid, and later it ends up being a prop grill where they cook on it, so probably the same prop.
randolphjcarter
Ha! forgot about that. I think you're right.
Kabe59
The springy one is fake, but the grill is obviously real.
ButterfaceTaintClown

Or the spiderman

He had tacky glue on his hand, but apparently it was all legit.. albeit, 150 takes later. https://youtu.be/bw1V5Kr-9Y0

You can see what looks like chewing gum stuck to the apple as it lands.
zbaerenlovesme
Why doesn't the apple move around?
Zaayl
The tray was probably made sticky as well so they wouldn't fly off from his movements?
AlaSnackbar
Still hard to believe. They should release all the takes as a direct tors release special edition.
SgtMichaelCross
I would absolutely love to see that! Raimi has always been big on practical effects, so I wouldn't put it past him for this.
cakeversus314
No that scene with spidey holding Mary Jane as they swing in the air, totally real.
theDogWhisper
bahahaha
browsib
uskglass
OMG that thing is insane.
cakeversus314
I cringe every time I think about it
