The Bell AH-1 Cobra's many faces.

1. Bell Model 209. Prototype AH-1 fitted with retractable skids.

2. Bell AH-1G HueyCobra. Initial 1966 production model gunship for the US Army, with one 1,400 shp Lycoming T53 turboshaft (the same engine used on the Huey).

3. Bell JAH-1G HueyCobra. Armament test version fitted with Hellfire missiles and a multi barrel cannon.

4. Bell TH-1G HueyCobra 'Training Cobra' (excuse the crappy picture). Dual control version used for training Cobra pilots.

5. Bell Z.14 HueyCobra. The Spanish Navy purchased eight new-build AH-1Gs, designating the type the "Z-14". These were equipped with the M35 20 mm cannon system, and were used to support coastal patrol boats. Four of these were lost in accidents. The remaining helicopters were retired in 1985 with three sent back to the US, and one kept in storage in Spain.

6. Bell AH-1Q Cobra. Equipped with the TOW/Cobra missile subsystem, Telescopic Sight Unit (TSU), and a Reflex sight. All future versions will be equipped with the TSU and be equipped to fire the TOW missile subsystem.

7. Bell AH-1S Cobra. An upgraded AH-1Q fitted with an 1,800 shp T53-L-703 turboshaft engine.

8. Bell QAH-1s Cobra (Sample picture). A target drone conversion of the AH-1S by Bell-Bristol Aerospace under a joint US and Canadian development program started in 1994. Honeywell further modified the QAH-1S into the Hokum-X by installing systems and hardware to allow it to simulate the Russian Kamov Ka-50 attack helicopter. Three Hokum-Xs were completed from 1998-2001.

9. Bell AH-1P Cobra. Fitted with composite rotors, flat plate glass cockpit, and improved cockpit layout for nap-of-earth (NOE) flight.

10. Bell TAH-1P Cobra. Training version fitted with dual controls.

11. Bell AH-1E Cobra (Sample picture). Fitted with the Enhanced Cobra Armament System (ECAS) featuring the M97A1 armament subsystem with a three-barreled M197 20 mm cannon. AH-1E models included the M147 Rocket Management Subsystem (RMS) to fire 70 mm rockets. I was slightly surprised when I couldn't find any pictures of the AH-1E, does it not get any love? Maybe I just wasn't looking hard enough :P.

12. Bell AH-1F Cobra. In addition to the upgrades mentioned above, the AH-1F features a head-up display, a laser rangefinder, an infrared jammer mounted above the engine exhaust, and an infrared suppressing engine exhaust system, and the M143 Air Data Subsystem (ADS).

13. Bell 209 Cobra. Civilian Variant of Ex-US military aircraft.

14. Bell 209 fitted with a sighting camera in place of the gun turret to identify forest fires.

15. Bell Model 249. Experimental demonstrator version fitted with a four-bladed rotor system, an uprated engine and experimental equipment, including Hellfire missiles.

16. Bell Model 309 kingCobra. Experimental all-weather version based on the AH-1G single-engine and AH-1J twin-engine designs. Two Bell 309s were produced; the first was powered by two Pratt and Whitney Canada T400 engines and the second was powered by a Lycoming T-55 engine.

17. Bell AH-1J SeaCobra. Initial twin-engined version.

18. Bell AH-1J International Cobra. Export version of the AH-1J with slightly downgraded systems.

19. Panha 2091 Toufan. Unlicensed Iranian upgraded version of the AH-1J International Cobra.Reported upgrades include: new cockpit armored panels, new Iranian-designed canopy, new avionics, nose-mounted camera and new cockpit design.

20. IAIO Toufan-1/2. Re-manufactured AH-1J International by Iran Aviation Industries Organization (IAIO), with locally sourced avionics, and weapons.

21. Bell AH-1W SuperCobra 'Whiskey Cobra'. Day/Night version with more powerful engines and more advanced weapons capabilities.

22. Bell AH-1Z Viper 'Zulu Cobra'. The AH-1Z features a four-blade, bearingless, composite main rotor system, uprated transmission, and a new target sighting system.
