Custom Breath of the Wild Zelda costume. Some parts self drafted, others from very modified patterns.

This is the 95% completed costume. At least the parts I am making. Sometimes it is difficult to make something for someone who does not live in the same state as you. Can't have them try it on as I go.

These are the main pictures of the costume that I have been using in the creation of the costume. I am making the shirt, bolero, the belts (both brown leather and the blue belt) as well as the pouch. And because I wanted too, I made the decorative yellow belt thing.

I have had to use parts of numerous patterns to then modify for the creation of this. The top patterns were used for the bolero. The two in the bottom left we're for the shirt. And I only used/modified the waist band of the skirt for the blue part of Zelda's belt.

The bolero is made using the top two patterns in the previous picture. Changing the bolero to be back opening instead of front (McCalls M6911), and shortening and changing the design of the sleeves(simplicity 1819). I made this with a lining, I really like to hide seams and keep everything looking professional. Also, the red fabric only goes halfway up the lining on the sleeves. I do what I can with what I've got on hand sometimes.

For the shirt, I took the jacket pattern (simplicity 1558) and I modified it to be back closing, with a zipper. As well as added 6" to the bottom of all pieces. Having the extra room in the front panel allowed for the detail work for the quilted look. I used the bottom half of the sleeves (simplicity 1315) with the top half of the sleeves from the jacket. I wanted the puffy look that she has in the game.

Once getting the shirt put together, it took a bit to make sure the sleeves we're perfect. The sleeve in this picture ended up getting tossed. The cuff was way to big, so I needed to remake it. As you can see, the reason I chose this particular jacket pattern (simplicity 1558) was because it gave me all the amazing lines that I needed to match the way Zelda's shirt looks.

Second attempt at the sleeves. I did the ribbon on it a little differently than I did the first time, but shortening the cuff makes it fit the way it is supposed to.

Back to working on the bolero, I wanted to make the triforce brooch look as closely to the pictures as I could. I think I did pretty good.

I didn't take pictures of the in progress lower band of the bolero. But I do like how it turned out. Here I am making the symbol on the front of the bolero. I attached it as an applique. I then started to modify the neckline again so I could get it as close to how it should look.

Getting bias tape put on. I used ribbon for the parts that are directly on the top itself. It turned out exactly how I wanted it to.

I self drafted the leather belt. It took a bit of math, and guess work to get it the right shape and size. Having an adjustable dress form really really helps.

At this time, it had been talked about and okayed to not do the designs in the belt. Which I am grateful for. My machine doesn't like doing too much sewing on leather. And my fingers can only handle so much hand sewing. The belt is held closed by 4 hand sewn on snaps.

I had the bias tape, and I wanted to try something new. I am always looking to learn new sewing techniques. And really, it does look awesome.

I used the waist band for the skirt pattern (simplicity 1346) to get the right shape for the fabric belt. I added and extra 3 inches to the bottom of the back and side pieces. And 1 1/2" to the front piece. Then I just covered the edges with bias tape. It has two snaps on the front left side.

I had a bit of a time deciding how to do the yellow circles on the bolero trim. I really didn't want to attempt to do an applique for all the spots. And I didn't want to spend forever hand embroidering it. But when I saw the yellow beads, I knew that would work best. And it looks great too.

I just did a simple self drafted lack of pattern for the bag. All it was is an 8" x 20" piece of leather with two 3x6" pieces for the sides. I then did the same with blue for the lining. I did have to make the toggle myself. It is really hard to find a blue triangle toggle. I mean seriously. So I bought some Sculpey clay and made it myself. Looks pretty good if I do say so. I will put some straps on the back so that the client can hang it on a small belt of her own.

Front and back views. I would have preferred to have an invisible zipper for the back of the bolero, but, they don't seem to make ones that separate on the bottom. And then the stores didn't have the right shade of blue. Or even close to it. So I just used a black zipper for it.

Here is the front side views. The pouch is just clipped onto the leather belt for now.
