Michigan Road Map
This is a map that shows every road in the State of Michigan. No state borders are drawn, the entire image of the state is produced entirely by the coordinates of the roads in the state.

I produced this map using R, specifically the ggplot package. To make the map, I used 2016 data from the US Census TIGER (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) Database, Available Here: (http://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/tiger.html). My process was essentially:
1) Download all files from the TIGER database
2) Load and combine all county-level files for Michigan, mapped by FIPS code in the filename)
3) Convert the latitude and longitude coordinates to mercator projection coordinates (while the mercator projection isn't the best for large areas, it is very familiar for state-level maps, which is why I chose it)
4) Plot the resulting image, where each line in the image represents a road segment

The resulting image is above, composed of the thousands of individual roads and streets in the state of Michigan.
