I am pretty afraid of spider usually but jumping spiders are so damned adorable.

Do these types of spiders practice cannibalistic mating type behaviors? Or can they coexist?

What breed of jumping spider is that? I'd love to have one that big, about the small ones I'm so worried I could accidentally lose it or injure it.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think it's a regal jumper.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Same, but what breed of spider?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Novie, noooooo!

2 years ago | Likes 264 Dislikes 0

I don't completely understand but I am entranced. They are beautiful.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was unaware humans and spiders could interact on such a level.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are they different species of jumper? If so can they mate? How long do they live? I saw a really pretty one in my yard. Had a red back. How do you tell males from females? They are one of the few that don’t freak me out.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Depending on the species, they live one to two years. Sexing ranges from trivial to requiring a close-up look at their undersides, again depending on species.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Simple solution: keep a few from every species, then use that to figure yours out

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Somehow these "jumping spiders" seem more aware or intelligent of human of human interaction. I don't know maybe I'm just imagining it.

2 years ago | Likes 170 Dislikes 0

Check out Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky, great SciFi with intelligent spiders.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They really do. I think it's because they are visually motivated like us. A creature that looks at you makes more sense to us than one that mostly uses senses we don't use so much.

That was an interesting read,

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reading about how smart they are while hunting blew my mind. So much intellect in such a small spider!

jumping spiders are how someone who wnats to get over arachnophobia should do it. They are amazing spiders and not scary at all. Like the dogs of the spider world.

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

The problem I have with this method is my arachnophobia seems selective. I ADORE Jumping Spiders, but other ones? Like, Huntsman Spiders? Fuck no. Still very much wigged out by them.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

True facts. My buddy with arachnophobia has come to think jumping spiders are cute!

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

They are very smart. Mine watched me and would check out every little new thing. Think of tiny little 8 legged cats.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I remember hearing they are around the same intelligence as cats.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

That sounds like a joke about cats.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

There is an amazing book series by Adrian Tchaikovsky where these play an important role. Don’t want to give to much away but if you like spiders or insects in general: read the children of time novels

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Oh, that's definitely a good one. I loved it.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No, they are. They are very intelligent and curious. They are also the only spiders who appear to dream.

2 years ago | Likes 153 Dislikes 2

Do they dream that little spider boys and spider girls will be able to join hands with little human boys and human girls as sisters and brothers?

They’re also the only known spider species to have memory retention and use the memorised location of prey to move into another hunting position without maintaining sight of the prey

2 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 0

So, they're really clever little guys.

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

That requires a degree of object permanence, as well!

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Impressive. I know humans who can't do that.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The cats of the spider universe. I wouldn’t keep them as pets but these are the only spiders I don’t kill on sight. I will hold them and take them back outside. All other spiders can die and burn in hell where they belong. Well I guess tarantulas are ok also. I’ll move them far far away
