#5 my experience growing up in Tennessee is that some people genuinely treat that flag as a regional pride thing and don't actually agree with everything the Confederacy stood for. HOWEVER, and this is an important caveat, those people are very much in the minority.

#15 we adopted a vet clinic cat who had this job before he retired. He was surrendered to the clinic because his human couldn't afford a lifesaving procedure. So the clinic adopted him and he was a kind of "candy striper" for the clinic and his job was to comfort those new admissions who were nervous and afraid. He would visit every cage and sit with them to help them acclimate to the new situation.

People who aren't from the South might not fully realize this, but the Confederate flag is very normalized in the South. Like, so much so that I was probably already an adult the first time I heard anyone say it was a symbol of hate. It made no sense to me. They are everywhere. People had stickers on cars, kids wore clothes with it, my favorite guitarist has several guitars with the flag prominently painted on the front. Before Google, someone had to tell you. But no one did.

Looking back, there were some, no doubt. I left, so I can't tell you what goes on there now. I remember in middle school they were teaching the civil war and there was one black kid in my class. Just one. And the teacher was very adamant that states rights were the cause of the civil war and slavery was a minor issue that got caught up in the conflict.

So yes, but as someone raised in texas it is entirely possible to go through primary education and not really understand what the Confederate flag stands for. Groups like the united daughters of the Confederacy have been rewriting history books since a month after the civil war. Like I thought the Confederate flag was dope growing up because the dukes of hazards was my only context.

I weep for the federal education system. I’d cause a civil war or shattering of the union if I were given unilateral power over the Dept. of Education. Every single state teaches the same curriculum from a Science-first and research heavy perspective based on Truth. I’m tired of people trying to hide our past. Our children should be taught the horrors that their ancestors perpetuated and the many injustices we’ve allowed since. No homeschooling or religion-centric schooling. Just facts

Makes no sense to me. As a New Yorker it feels like wearing the red armband, because their family supported the German American Bund in the 1930s and refusing to investigate the symbolism even as it’s portrayed in media and historically as a symbol of not only hate, but also a hateful government that your family supported or was a part of (in the case of the confederacy). Makes me start to think the entire thing is fake, but fuck it…I choose to believe in benevolent ignorance over subterfuge

I suspect the more common case is more mixed. People who don't hate every person of color they come across, but still hold racist attitudes and don't want to think about how the system benefits them. Maybe they think "I don't hate black people, but they need to take responsibility for themselves instead of blaming their problems on old history" or something.
