Chiron can be bought now. Roadster is a concept.
bighelmetman
The Tesla's build quality will be nowhere near the Bugatti's. And the Tesla's not out til 2020 til then these proposed numbers mean nothing.
sickburn
If I understand literally the only data on the Tesla is that they have a prototype which moves under its own power. The rest is untested.
Drakitomon
But only already exists and has been tested, tweaked, and delivered to buyers, while the other doesn't even have a prototype built yet.
doggos4lyf
Until Tesla gets rid of quality control issues, major overheating issues, they will not be in the same sentence as Bugatti etc
IAmBoredAtWork
you are right but many people preferred horse carriages before cars, just give it time, petrol engines were having bigger issues once
I know, I'm just saying the circle jerk for Tesla is getting annoying.
innagaddavidababy
You can buy a Bugatti, so there’s that.
NotGonnaSugarCoat
Chiron every time.
schrodingersasymmetric12gauge
Is Tesla buying ad space on imgur or something?
TuggSpeedmann
Bugatti gets a range of 286 miles per tank? That seems super high....
SuperRockinMrMagic
Don't confuse range with mpg
Aypie
What were you expecting from a sports e-car? It's like comparing transistors to vacuum tubes/lamps.
tornadosandwich
Or you can get a Dodge demon which falls between them for the low price of $80 grand
TheKenM
I️ don’t think I️ would trust a Tesla over 250. Bugatti was specifically made and engineered to do just that.
Koeheiheghehfhdgseg trashed their speed record. But what car needs to that fast, total dick measuring contest. Also shreds the tires
AllCanadianEhEhEhBeef
"Prototype" Tesla Roadster. You can't compare something that doesn't technically exist yet to something that does.
CanUweldOil
Or the fact it's a roadster compared to a fucking space rocket
UnremarkablyInteresting
This. Come back and compare them when the tesla is actually released with those numbers.
BigTex1836
Exactly. These are all just claims. It's not real yet. We will have to wait and see.
2shy4you
Well one does exist, so it does technically exist. And I believe that makes me technically correct. Which is some kind of correct.
EmberFiretail
The two roadsters prototypes likely cost millions each to build, it's a concept car after all.
I could be wrong but I don't think the prototype is actually putting up these numbers. These are just goals. But I'm not an expert.
I'd like to see video evidence if the prototype really does this.
WeaponizedJerk
If they have a working prototype then it does exist. What they don’t have are models for commercial use, unlike Bugatti
Kitastrophe
I think the comment meant that there aren't commercially produced tesla roadsters yet. We're comparing a concept to a finished product
He said "technically exists". A prototype means it technically exists.
Carnot
To be fair, with the small number of bugattis that are actually shipped annually, they might as well be prototypes.
I think you might not really understand what a prototype is. It hasn't to do with the number of units shipped. The issue is going to be (1)
the issues which arise when you go from 'this is what we WANT to make' to 'This is what the real life limitations of production are' (2)
A consumer car would have to pass many checks. The Tesla could end up being watered down by time its a production model.
5P4C3M4N
I hope the grand tour season 2 has some stuff on teslas
misspoopsalot
Given how angry Tesla was about them scripting the whole breakdown of the first roadster before even getting the car, doubt if
Aw that would suck
Yeah, the writers aren’t the best at unbiased showmanship unfortunately
ChaosandChaos

That is freaking awesome
Koeinsegg engineer, using their parts... hell yah
MinnesotaTom
So what's the recharge time on a tesla roadster?
RadmanTheWise
I think it will be stupidly long on a domestic supply but they can probably get it to less than an hour on a more powerful supply.
playstation360
Something like 20 hours if you rewire the house, 100 hours from standard outlet.
Electriccarsbestcars
"rewire" aka dropping in a breaker and running a dryer plug. Takes a trip to home depot and an hour
Dryers only run like 2 kW. I'm talking electric stove levels, 30-40A. Then you need to run that cable from the breaker to the charger.
Every house I've been in has had the breaker in or near the garage. I guess I should state that I'm in the US for reference
I originally set everything up for my leaf and now the tesla. You don't need any special equipment for charging either.
Superchargers whoohoo
thatsbadmmkay
This is how you move America towards green energy. Fast fuckin cars.
Triprw
What does an electric car have to do with green energy? Is it creating it somehow?
Even if you are powering your EV via the dirtiest coal plant, it is still cleaner than combustion engines.
not if you compare the newest vehicles. They are quite efficient. More efficient IC engines is more realistic for the short term.
Is this info pre VW scandal because it turns out almost all the car makers were also duping emissions tests.
Maybe. But consider the effects of the batteries on the environment too. It's not black and white. Just steps in the right direction
Definitely. Given that we're getting better about recycling batteries and how horribly dirty it is to pull oil from the ground too...
I get to feel kinda smug because my cities power is all hydro and wind and super cheap. So that's fun
rando84
It's greener if you live in an area with a lot of nuclear, wind or hydro. In coal-fired West Virginia, it'd be pretty counterproductive.
The grid is all connected. If you live in the states 70% of your power comes from fossil fuels, mainly coal.
Sorry. Meant 60%
AFreakingMango
My theory is still that Tesla announced this because their stock was going to tank given the Model 3 production issues.
ThisWasATriumph
Well they just made $250+ million in preorder money too.
IamTheSherm
You think they just pooped out a working prototype hypercar in 6 months?
davethomas26
I think you’re correct. Wall street folks are all over Tesla right now for perceived issues with Tesla Model 3 and their solar roof venture.
marsgoose
Also the potential end of EV subsidies
Stock is overvalued like crazy, they are worth more than GM!
YouMayFindThisMildlyInteresting
Plus their fanboys will each hand over an interest free loan of $50k. At least they'll have no problems making the low volume Roadster.
12rt2345g342563
Sounds like a good investment in job creation to me. Or is that only bad when Musk does it?
Imgurkoff69
Not to mention all the government subsidies Tesla gets to stay afloat.
50K? The downpayment is the full 250K. Basically a 250 million dollar interest free loan right there.
iUsed2LikeBulge
What?
Down payment for the Founders Edition, of which there are 1000, is the full 250K price of the car.
dagnorbert
How’s much is the charging station at the house?
Depends on how fast you want it charged.
Not much. We just hooked up another dryer plug next to the car and it charges up from 0 to 296mi range in about 8 hours.
adriedupoldprune
The current wall charger is 500 dollars. But you will also need to pay an electrician to install it and the wiring for it. So it 1/2
arent there two chargers, one of which could be plugged in regular outlet which i believe is common in every garage, it is much slower tough
Yah that one comes with the car It's extremely slow if you use a standard outlet like 2 or 3 miles of range perday. More usefully 1/2
fuck 2 to 3 miles per HOUR not day.
it can be plugged into a bunch of different type of 240 volt outlet the most common of which is the standard 30 amp 240 plug used for 2/3
for electric dryers and stoves which does 22 to 14 miles of range per hour. You can also plug it into a 50 amp socket for 30 to 25.
varies a lot based on how much work is required to retrofit the wiring. Your talking a little over a grand to several grand. 2/2
badalalala
Not that bad if you're gonna spend $40k+ buying the car anyway.
JustAnotherPOG
Isn't the electrical work just running a 220 line to the garage? That would have to be one hell of a route to break $1k in labor.
Plumbing and electrical work is expensive and generally costs a lot more then most people paying for it think it should.
I have had a 220 line run in my house. It didn't cost that much. The only way I could see it costing that much is if you had to (1/2)
Also I was including the cost of the charger.
AIRBORNEALLTHEWAY
People are easily taken. $50 in material and maybe an hours worth of work isn't worth a Grand. Damn POGs.
I guess you didn't do too well at the "paragraph comprehension" portion of the ASVAB. I said it would have to be an exceptionally (1/2)
Quizz25S
Misleading information is misleading.
DangerTrain
Uninformative comment is uninformative.
Squagglewaggle
Yeah but the Chiron gives me an eargasm because of the batshit insane engine: quad turbos and 16 cylinder
DatSRTdoe
Ah yes. I too use the excellent eargasm when talking about cars
Bob570
Yup. No matter how fast EVs are, they'll always be boring.
Musk said something about how ICE will soon seem like steam trains. And I thought, finally someone gets the appeal.
BlackTrashTiger
He said they would feel like steam trains with quiche. I love quiche.

FatStratCat
My WRX is slower than both, but that H4 rumble gets me way more erect than either
Counterfit

Mdt948
I’ll never afford either so guess it doesn’t matter...
MRruski7711
I like your thinking
Trex69
You never know!
SendMeDogs
If that’s your mindset then your correct
New technology is expensive and is for the rich at first like PCs were, wait a few years and there will be budget models like model 3
ASongOfPissAndFarts
You know what blows my mind? The Roadster is $200,000 sticker price. Which means it took a fraction of that to actually make.
EF5Cyniclone
Not necessarily, Musk is big on trying to push progress even at a loss, they're likely selling it a lot closer to cost than most would.
OriginalHayze
Elon Musk is filthy rich, you dont get filthy rich from selling your product at a low cost when you run ALL the manufacturing processes in
your own Factory. he is trying to do a good thing. But he is still trying to make money.
Notme68
Tesla makes its most through investors more than sales, so pushing sales a minimal profits is still a good investment.
pokeballin
Its also a lot cheaper since they do direct to consumer sales. None of that car dealership up-charge BS.
TheNextHafthorBjornsson
Tesla is taking 50k deposits for the roadster and then further payments I think annually? Can't remember exactly.
Headstereo
hmm the model 3 is great although part of my hipster side knows its not going to be a unique brand to tech savish people anymore..
KymJongUrMum
agreed.
rgzdev
Credit where credit's due, after hyperloop i was losing confidence in tesla as a company.
Mobius1One
Not with that attitude!
IAmGodot
Rich people are still going to buy a Bugatti. They don't care about the specs, they care about the status symbol.
MYNYMAL
One makes vroom vroom noises, the other does not.
Yup. I'd rather drive my 2000 Camaro than an EV, even if it's not as fast. I drive a car to have fun, and EVs are boring
Ev's are quiet* I've ridden electric bikes that have scared the fuck out of me & I'm confident in my skills. Quiet doesn't equate boring.
8hourgamer
the crazy cost it part of the reason they get it
MadMupp
Its also how stable it is. The Bugatti is smooth, stable, quiet and comfy at 250mph+ but the tesla is hot air at the moment
There are different levels of rich.
vikvc
(2) but those who get rich in Silicon Valley from startups might consider the Tesla.
Jokesterwild
they care about quality as well. The Bugatti is perfection. Haven't heard of that with Tesla build quality...
fausterion18
Exactly, if it was only about the specs everybody would be buying hellcats and corvettes instead of lambos.
DaneBrass
Most buy them as assets to avoid paying taxes, like buying real-estate to show a loss. And if you don't drive it, then value will go up.
RedIronCrown
The same applies to the Tesla, really.
It's not a status brand.
It absolutely is a status brand. Any noncommercial-use vehicle that retails for six figures is a status symbol.
noyouratowel
It's the status brand for tech nerds.
It is, a bit. But not even in the same atmospheric level as Bugatti
(1) Maybe a football player like Ronaldo or whomever from the NBA will get the Buggatti. They care for "status"
We call that "new money" and new money tends to disappear.
Comet260
Wasn't there a post here a while back about how many pro players have gone bankrupt?
There may have been. I saw a report on it and it was baffling at how many people blew their millions before their contract ended.
MrE158
Yes, while the salary is huge the earning years are very short, and the lifestyle you're pushed to live to keep up is very expensive.
poochyena
uhh, Tesla is a major status symbol too. They also DO care about specs.
Price matters to the target market though. A $200k status symbol isn't as impressive as a $3m status symbol.
Tesla is a meme with hipster kids right now. They're not really that big in automotive circles.
It's a status symbol for wealthy forward thinking techies. For country bumpkin types it's a stupid toy.
Yeah, but it is a $3M status symbol. You think people buy gold chains cause they're practical?
azgrak
Leaving out the Koenigsigg, which kicks the Bugatti's ass in every category. And will soon probably break 300mph. Hmmm.
Vicith
How can I brag to my friends about my expensive ass supercar if I can't even pronounce it?
Thorbane
How the hell would they do that without the tires disintegrating?
Large diameters. Fewer revolutions per mile = fewer deformations per second.
Michelin pilot sport cup2 tires. Available to the public.
MushroomFiend
The F5 uses the same tires as the veyron, but it's about half the veyron's weight so they'll be under alot less stress.
The F5 is Hennessey's upcoming supercar.
MadiCorax
@KrillCanoe25 is right. The Agera R is Koenigsegg's hypercar, with most of the stats of the Regera being not tested as far yet.
... I just looked at the usernames. Wow, I'm dumb. But I still must say, the F5 hasn't been tested like the Agera R has been tested. Yet.
Isn't it primarily rotational forces that are the issue?
Not until you get over 500-600. That can be mitigated by the larger diameter as well
Rapiecage
when do you ever need to break 300mph?
MajorSoap
Cuz I'm rich?

yoozernaiym
Tesla has gotten $5B (which Im sure covers startup incentives and whatnot). But GM and Chrysler got $85B during the auto crisis 10 years ago
They could easily be sold for way more money
once EV is more popular there wouldn't be subsidies, but it is a transition we have to make as a society, we can't run on petrol much longer
kenkennethfromconnecticut
i had to search for this, so it wasn't stated twice

Albeit a much smaller fortune.
JeffTeck
Still expensive yes, but compare that to $3,000,000!
PoweredbyOSengine
Not in the exotic car market.
MesmerHSDE
Yeah. At this price point you're looking at stuff like the Audi R8, McLaren 570s/ 570gt, and the Lamborghini Huracan. If what Tesla (1/2)
Is accurate, this will smoke all of those in everything besides perhaps prolonged track performance due to the batteries overheating (1/2)
Also due to weight, those batteries have got to add a fair amount of kg (3/3)

Hayatev3
It's fairly easy to make a child. Not so easy to make 200k. I've never heard someone say "I accidentally made 200k"... But a baby...

I can afford neither! Just because there is something 15 x "out of price range", doesn't make "out of price range" any more affordable :)
well it is a supercar, for the average consumer there are cheaper EV, model 3 if you want Telsa, Prius and Chevrolet volt comes to mind
jlist
I know. I'd rather have the money in an S&P index fund
MyNamelsNobody
No it's not, it's a monthly payment. Get an above average job and you should be fine.
Uglytattoos
People don't buy Bugatti's (or any supercar) because it makes sense in comparison to something else. They buy it because they want it.
And as a (currently) appreciating asset; car collections are a great way to avoid paying taxes for some people.
kirivon
And they want it, usually, because it's exclusive. The irony is that the people buying luxury hypercars are probably doing so specifically>1
because people like the ones who make these kinds of comparison charts can't afford them. >2
Daeyelle
Imagine being like that: I'll buy this thing because other people can't afford it I'm the greatest yay go me!
Haha, well, as we live in a society that conflates wealth with social worth the implication is: My car is worth more than you and I am too.
Worth is all relative. Right now everything in my life, even the smallest thing is worth more to me than you. That would change if we become
PokoOnoandtheJamJams
They buy it because chaffuering a chick in a Bugatti means you are going to get laid. Rich person cheat code
Badfish941
Ok. But what about the people that don't have 3 million dollars to throw around? This isn't shaming Chiron owners, it's just an amazing car
BuiltonSin
Some people want the best. It just happens the better options is also the cheaper option in this case.
SkylarCalder
they buy it to impress to who don't even care
bilborrax
but are they going to want a bugatti now?
They're currently holding value and typically appreciate over time, better than having 2 million in the bank being taxed.
no, they will want bugatti AND tesla now
voormas73
There will be be always people who prefer a Rembrandt to an Andy Warhol painting.
epicstorybro

Iwontbeback
he was saying both cars are works of art, and as such when you have enough money to afford either, preference is subjective.
It's a terrible analogy.
Janusha
There will always be people who prefer a diamond over a stone. Even if they will do the same things.
ThisThis is like arguing that a diamond is more expensive than a stone. Nobody has cancelled their 3 million dollar Bugatti over this Tesla.
Notyourexboyfriend
Ikr. This is so retarded. It's like "why did you buy that -69 charger when you could get a prius. It's a much better economical choice"
ARandomAlien
because it's better in every way and is cheaper as well as looking beautiful
prius isn't faster nor prettier than a charger, you should compare some small hatchback with Prius, not a muscle car
Except the prius in this scenario is the same year, faster, looks amazing and is 1/15 the cost...
QuackQuackAttack
A Tesla roadster is faster than a Bugatti. Not just more economical.
Mishn0
buy a Bugatti's what? A Bugatti's hub cap? Oh, you mean the plural of Bugatti, which is "Bugattis"
TwoStepsFromHell
You sure told him
Colofmeister
Actually 's is plural, s' is possession, he/she said it right, you're wrong
GroundHOG2010
Plural is adding s or es depending on the word (ending in s, plural is usually es, for example actresses, else it's usually appending s).
Both are possessive, s' is usually used in case of a word ending in s, though 's can also be used depending on the dialect.
Maybe it's just "Bugs". Look at my Bug fleet!
indianajonesey
Well I thought it was funny.
Wow, I guess you people really like incorrect apostrophe usage. Excuse me!
fafnir77
You must be fun at parties.
parties? where lots of people I don't know are? yeah, right...
It would sound better if it was "People don't buy a Bugatti".
vulturedoors
You sound butthurt that you don't own a Bugatti.
Pengarr
Actually, since it's Italian, and already ends with an i, wouldn't the plural just be "Bugatti"? I mean, while we're being dicks about this.
joshuaiwjew
Maybe not because in English most plural words end in an s so we apply that rule to foreign language words too?
barbarhack
IF it was an Italian noun, regular masculine Italian pluralised nouns end in an I, and singular start with O: (S) Bugatto -> (P) Bugatti
Also, it could be an irregular noun, and go from E -> I: (S) Bugatte -> (P) Bugatti, however Bugatti is a French company
The company was founded in Molsheim while it was German, by an Italian man. Molsheim is now part of France, but the name comes from Italy.
Treppzz
*lisp* Actually it's French
PapiBlanco
Hon hon
Oh, huh. Looked it up. The company was founded in a city that was in Germany, but is now in France. But Ettore Bugatti himself was Italian.
capughe
Maybe, but as someone who doesn't care about such things is impressed with the quality I could get for less. Not less enough, but still.
r31830
Bugatti Chiron hasn't had a top speed recorded yet, so that title goes to the Koenigsegg Agera RS.
PizzaTammer
Not mass produced. But the point of this was every person I've ever met when it was mega popular was because of speed. I was in hs so...
Maybe that's why I have this interpretation of why it's wanted.
live2dyec4
Koenigsegg is life
It's not even the fastest at the moment. You could build a faster custom car for an order of magnitude less money.
Not a street-legal one.
MrMcCookieMuffin
It's more likely that and the status symbol associated with it honestly.
One thing the Bugatti has going for it is that it's real. Tesla is unveiling a lot of great concepts while struggling to get model 3 out
Thet revealed it last week. Bugatti revealed the Chiron years ago and theres only a few on the road
There's a few on the road because that's how they want it. You don't think a VAG subsidiary could churn em out if they wanted?
They're primarily showpiece/prestige and testbed items. The Veyron cost about £5m per car to make, and sold around the £1m mark each.
iLovDogs
To be fair, bugatti only makes a handful a year. Tesla already made a couple of these. As a super car goes, one is enough to make it real.
2020 is a while away ... Will they come up with something?
Cortezdelanoche
Something more expensive? You betcha!
Unfortunately car manufacturers aren’t like electronics manufacturers, they don’t really have that fast of a product cycle.
gnuclear
Well, AMD's Zen architecture took about four years to design. They started from the ground up, instead of building from an existing design.
juggernaut1
Neither does Tesla. They usually underdeliver at first then gradually make up for it
RiddSann
Bugatti ? Nope, the Veyron is already getting old compared to both. Maybe Koenigsegg. Maybe. I kinda hope so, but they're hybrid so....
(Veyron is old compared to both : Bugatti takes too muche time to make a new model, and the jumps between them are not big enough)
bbirbb
This is a comparison with the Chiron, not the Veyron. The Veyron is no longer in production.
Ik, never said it was, said it was "old compared to both" referring to the Chiron and Roadster, hence my 2nd message.
You mentioned roadster and Ksg, then said "both" which refers back to previous two, being roadster and Ksg.
And why bring up the Veyron at all? It's irrelevant to this picture and the 2020 comment as a whole.
ratcamper

That's awesome! Nice car but I think the range is the real attention getter. Suddenly the market expanded massively.

I hope they give it a full title like Model R P200T
DarthSidiot
Silly question but how does one buy a tesla? Is it financed? What sort of paperwork is required and does it have trade in options? 1/2
So, you can either buy one online or in a gallery. You can pay fully in cash, lease it, or take out a loan from us. You'll need a decent 1/?
Credit score to lease or loan, and a down payment is usually due at signing (typically around $5000). It's really just like buying any 2/?
Car, but you can buy online. If you go cash, we take either credit/debit, or a direct transfer from a bank account. Hope this helps! 3/3
I read somewhere that you could trade in Teslas for upgraded models (much like phones) on some sort of contract but I couldn't verify it 2/2
You can! Lots of people like to have the latest and greatest, so many people lease for that reason, but you can trade in your current 1/2
Car (it doesn’t even have to be a Tesla!) for a discount on a new transaction.
Thedaleksarebadnews2
I personally don't think that's a silly question, and I would like to know the answer also.

Speed, accessory usage, outside tempature all dramatically affect the range on Teslas. 620 is the max
Speed, accessory usage, outside tempature all dramatically affect the range on every vehicle. FTFY.
Not dramatically, gas vehicles dont generaly fluctuate more than 3 or so mpg unless towing. Cold weather kills the range on battery cars
Yep. I'm still a little blown away by how much power god damn wind shield wipers eat.
On Tesla specifically or all vehicles?
noctynight
I don’t race, so yeah, that’s a winner in my book.
if you don't race maybe a roadster wouldn't be the most practical car only 4 seats (2 for small people only) and not much room for baggage
Oh shit. I’m 6’7” so yeah that won’t work for me.
filben7
Im calling bullshit on that range. Maybe if you set the cruise for 40 mph in a hilly area.
Anonawesome
Not blaming you for being a skeptic, but everyone who has called BS on Ole Musky's claims has ended up looking really stupid in the end.
PatrikLilja
I don't see how this would make him look stupid..
Na, its 60mph. We can get the full 296miles on our S if we auto pilot at 60 on I5 on a not rainy day.
TinyRocktopus
The large battery was probably to reduce the overheating problem the range is just a side effect
MerToo
trick is to have a very good drag coefficient, and not blow a lot of energy on spoilers (which you shouldn't need on a highway...).
So it can't corner at speed.
dunno. With computer controlled electric AWD it should do pretty well, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Bugatti can pull higher G
It's going to be heavy as balls, and have no extra downforce.
roadhunter
And leave the mother in law at home.
It has a 200 kWh battery. The model s 100d has 100 kWh and 335 miles of range. Sooo math checks out.
Really? God damn thats a lot of battery. Like an insane amount. They have to be new to fit it all in.
https://jalopnik.com/heres-what-a-battery-researcher-told-us-about-the-tesla-1820558723
The pack is probably massive. The one for the semi will be bigger. Speculation is around 800 kWh to 1 mWh.
Yeah but it also has to be a new denser architecture or something. That is truly huge.
thatSteveFan
Wait isn't that starting to get into the energy of a decent bomb at that point? That's an insane amount of energy, and I can only imagine..
ReLeVaNtUSERNAMESareReLeVaNT
Shit the 100D has over 950lbs of battery on board so roughly 1700-1800 lbs of battery on what supposed to be a sports car?
Hoptimonium
Unless they found a way to double the storage without doubling the weight.
Chemistry doesn't work that way there are minor things you can do to make it more efficient but its fairly minuscule. Also Tesla is too
teabaggerino
It is quite a lot, but the batteries are in the floor (on current ones). The insanely low center of gravity partially comepnsates.
The problem isn't the CG they've been putting the batteries in the floor since the original Roadster its the tires. Momentum is still 1/x
IDontKnowWhatToDoAnymoreAndImTired
In fact, the low center of gravity actually helps improve handling.

Ol' musky said 'at highway speeds'
akristofor
"Literally no one calls me that or has ever called me that."
ScruffyThePirate
They usually test that kind of thing at like 60 on a super flat highway.
Eldibs
So real-world use won't be too far off from that, then? That's pretty good.
Minimum legal highway speed is 40mph.
Typically just 15 below the speed limit. If you do 40 on the highways out here that are 80, you will die if you don't get pulled over first.
What is sane and what is legal are not always the same thing. But someone posted the battery pack specs, fucking hell, its massive.

Okay, my last question seems quite weird right now but his comment was at -2 when I made it -1 and posted "Why downvotes?"
bigeasy44
Isn't Bugatti's range limited by the limits of the tires? They have a tank only enough tank so that you can go all out from full & will run
Vyrro
Its max speed is limited by its tyres
Out of fuel before the tires fail. Letting the tesla go for almost 3X further sounds negligent.
IAmTheEarlyEvening
Also, when the Bugatti runs out of range, it takes about 3 minutes to "charge it up" again. Not a couple of hours.
lAlwaysUpvotePugs
What? Top speed is limited by tires, not range. Range is at normal speeds.
ForMyOwnAmusement
huh? Pretty sure that range isn't at max speed...
yes, it is not, and that applies to every vehicle...
cr1515
We need to know how long the telsa tires last for. That will be the deal breaker
They tested un the same cup 2 tires
If there's anyone to do it, ol musky is a good bet, but those tires were specifically designed to operate at the bugatti's level. They were
A new compound and design, the new pinnacle of tire tech. I wonder how much they can be improved. But like I said I'd bet on Elon doin it.

That was measured at highway speed.
Yeah, just like how Bugatti will run out of fuel in 15 min at top speed too.
elfensky
that's 76 miles (122 kilometers)
CrocodileDunphy
Neither will the Chiron make it max range at max speed.
killexthefox
They did the math on top gear and I don't remember exactly but the chiron would go about 30 something miles flatout

Yup. Makes anything farther than 600 miles a problem in the comparison. 1000 miles at 75 MPH: Tesla - 16 hours, Bug - 14 hours

I think it can do like 70-80 though.

Yeah but you could hire some really fast guys to drive you around for the next 3 years til it comes out and still save 2.62 million dollars.
The fact that so many people still resist electric cars is staggering. The p100d is already real and will destroy anything in it's price
Snooochy
Production starts in 2019 though. So they'll work out the kinks by then
am0k
According to their history with production it looks more like 2030
Considering Tesla is hemorrhaging money with their 3 series issues, I doubt we will see the riafsster any time soon.
OldManandtheSee
The stats for the Tesla are all CLAIMED, not yet verified.
RamAssScratcher
I mean a bugattti production run is only 500 cars so there's that. Given they don't really devalue as time goes on.
At those numbers, they typically appreciate.
At 1/15th the cost, I’d be happy to buy something that might devalue faster but give me better performance

BigTex1836
I could be wrong but I don't think the prototype is actually putting up these numbers. These are just goals. But I'm not an expert.
BigTex1836
I'd like to see video evidence if the prototype really does this.
WeaponizedJerk
If they have a working prototype then it does exist. What they don’t have are models for commercial use, unlike Bugatti
Kitastrophe
I think the comment meant that there aren't commercially produced tesla roadsters yet. We're comparing a concept to a finished product
WeaponizedJerk
He said "technically exists". A prototype means it technically exists.
Carnot
To be fair, with the small number of bugattis that are actually shipped annually, they might as well be prototypes.
Kitastrophe
I think you might not really understand what a prototype is. It hasn't to do with the number of units shipped. The issue is going to be (1)
Kitastrophe
the issues which arise when you go from 'this is what we WANT to make' to 'This is what the real life limitations of production are' (2)
UnremarkablyInteresting

So what's the recharge time on a tesla roadster?
RadmanTheWise
I think it will be stupidly long on a domestic supply but they can probably get it to less than an hour on a more powerful supply.
playstation360
Something like 20 hours if you rewire the house, 100 hours from standard outlet.
Electriccarsbestcars
"rewire" aka dropping in a breaker and running a dryer plug. Takes a trip to home depot and an hour
playstation360
Dryers only run like 2 kW. I'm talking electric stove levels, 30-40A. Then you need to run that cable from the breaker to the charger.
Electriccarsbestcars
Every house I've been in has had the breaker in or near the garage. I guess I should state that I'm in the US for reference
Electriccarsbestcars
I originally set everything up for my leaf and now the tesla. You don't need any special equipment for charging either.

This is how you move America towards green energy. Fast fuckin cars.
Triprw
What does an electric car have to do with green energy? Is it creating it somehow?
Electriccarsbestcars
Even if you are powering your EV via the dirtiest coal plant, it is still cleaner than combustion engines.
Triprw
not if you compare the newest vehicles. They are quite efficient. More efficient IC engines is more realistic for the short term.
Electriccarsbestcars
Is this info pre VW scandal because it turns out almost all the car makers were also duping emissions tests.
Triprw
Maybe. But consider the effects of the batteries on the environment too. It's not black and white. Just steps in the right direction
Electriccarsbestcars
Definitely. Given that we're getting better about recycling batteries and how horribly dirty it is to pull oil from the ground too...
Electriccarsbestcars
I get to feel kinda smug because my cities power is all hydro and wind and super cheap. So that's fun
rando84
It's greener if you live in an area with a lot of nuclear, wind or hydro. In coal-fired West Virginia, it'd be pretty counterproductive.
Triprw
The grid is all connected. If you live in the states 70% of your power comes from fossil fuels, mainly coal.
Triprw
Sorry. Meant 60%
AFreakingMango
My theory is still that Tesla announced this because their stock was going to tank given the Model 3 production issues.

IamTheSherm
You think they just pooped out a working prototype hypercar in 6 months?

SuperRockinMrMagic

Imgurkoff69
Not to mention all the government subsidies Tesla gets to stay afloat.
AFreakingMango
50K? The downpayment is the full 250K. Basically a 250 million dollar interest free loan right there.
iUsed2LikeBulge
What?
AFreakingMango
Down payment for the Founders Edition, of which there are 1000, is the full 250K price of the car.
dagnorbert
How’s much is the charging station at the house?
playstation360
Depends on how fast you want it charged.
Electriccarsbestcars
Not much. We just hooked up another dryer plug next to the car and it charges up from 0 to 296mi range in about 8 hours.
adriedupoldprune
The current wall charger is 500 dollars. But you will also need to pay an electrician to install it and the wiring for it. So it 1/2
IAmBoredAtWork
arent there two chargers, one of which could be plugged in regular outlet which i believe is common in every garage, it is much slower tough
adriedupoldprune
Yah that one comes with the car It's extremely slow if you use a standard outlet like 2 or 3 miles of range perday. More usefully 1/2
adriedupoldprune
fuck 2 to 3 miles per HOUR not day.
adriedupoldprune
it can be plugged into a bunch of different type of 240 volt outlet the most common of which is the standard 30 amp 240 plug used for 2/3
adriedupoldprune
for electric dryers and stoves which does 22 to 14 miles of range per hour. You can also plug it into a 50 amp socket for 30 to 25.
adriedupoldprune
varies a lot based on how much work is required to retrofit the wiring. Your talking a little over a grand to several grand. 2/2
badalalala
Not that bad if you're gonna spend $40k+ buying the car anyway.
JustAnotherPOG
Isn't the electrical work just running a 220 line to the garage? That would have to be one hell of a route to break $1k in labor.
adriedupoldprune
Plumbing and electrical work is expensive and generally costs a lot more then most people paying for it think it should.
JustAnotherPOG
I have had a 220 line run in my house. It didn't cost that much. The only way I could see it costing that much is if you had to (1/2)

AIRBORNEALLTHEWAY

EF5Cyniclone
Not necessarily, Musk is big on trying to push progress even at a loss, they're likely selling it a lot closer to cost than most would.

TooDumbForRickandMorty
What bothers me is the cost, they cost more than that to make but are subsidized by the government
yoozernaiym
Tesla has gotten $5B (which Im sure covers startup incentives and whatnot). But GM and Chrysler got $85B during the auto crisis 10 years ago
TooDumbForRickandMorty
They could easily be sold for way more money
IAmBoredAtWork
once EV is more popular there wouldn't be subsidies, but it is a transition we have to make as a society, we can't run on petrol much longer
kenkennethfromconnecticut
i had to search for this, so it wasn't stated twice
DoctorDanielJackson
$200,000 is still a fortune.
ThisWasATriumph
already sold out of the 1000 preorder spots for the founder edition
Sionas
Albeit a much smaller fortune.
JeffTeck
Still expensive yes, but compare that to $3,000,000!
PoweredbyOSengine
Not in the exotic car market.
MesmerHSDE
Yeah. At this price point you're looking at stuff like the Audi R8, McLaren 570s/ 570gt, and the Lamborghini Huracan. If what Tesla (1/2)
MesmerHSDE
Is accurate, this will smoke all of those in everything besides perhaps prolonged track performance due to the batteries overheating (1/2)
MesmerHSDE
Also due to weight, those batteries have got to add a fair amount of kg (3/3)
Shnarloc
Or 1 child
Hayatev3
It's fairly easy to make a child. Not so easy to make 200k. I've never heard someone say "I accidentally made 200k"... But a baby...
stukajr
I can afford neither! Just because there is something 15 x "out of price range", doesn't make "out of price range" any more affordable :)
IAmBoredAtWork
well it is a supercar, for the average consumer there are cheaper EV, model 3 if you want Telsa, Prius and Chevrolet volt comes to mind
jlist
DaneBrass
And as a (currently) appreciating asset; car collections are a great way to avoid paying taxes for some people.
kirivon
And they want it, usually, because it's exclusive. The irony is that the people buying luxury hypercars are probably doing so specifically>1
kirivon
because people like the ones who make these kinds of comparison charts can't afford them. >2
Daeyelle
Imagine being like that: I'll buy this thing because other people can't afford it I'm the greatest yay go me!
kirivon
Haha, well, as we live in a society that conflates wealth with social worth the implication is: My car is worth more than you and I am too.
Daeyelle
DaneBrass
They're currently holding value and typically appreciate over time, better than having 2 million in the bank being taxed.
IAmBoredAtWork
no, they will want bugatti AND tesla now
voormas73
There will be be always people who prefer a Rembrandt to an Andy Warhol painting.
epicstorybro

Iwontbeback
he was saying both cars are works of art, and as such when you have enough money to afford either, preference is subjective.
epicstorybro
It's a terrible analogy.
Janusha
There will always be people who prefer a diamond over a stone. Even if they will do the same things.
Janusha
ThisThis is like arguing that a diamond is more expensive than a stone. Nobody has cancelled their 3 million dollar Bugatti over this Tesla.
Notyourexboyfriend
Ikr. This is so retarded. It's like "why did you buy that -69 charger when you could get a prius. It's a much better economical choice"
ARandomAlien
because it's better in every way and is cheaper as well as looking beautiful
IAmBoredAtWork
prius isn't faster nor prettier than a charger, you should compare some small hatchback with Prius, not a muscle car
Badfish941
GroundHOG2010
Both are possessive, s' is usually used in case of a word ending in s, though 's can also be used depending on the dialect.
Uglytattoos
Maybe it's just "Bugs". Look at my Bug fleet!
indianajonesey
Well I thought it was funny.
Mishn0
Wow, I guess you people really like incorrect apostrophe usage. Excuse me!
fafnir77
You must be fun at parties.
Mishn0
parties? where lots of people I don't know are? yeah, right...
GroundHOG2010
It would sound better if it was "People don't buy a Bugatti".
vulturedoors
You sound butthurt that you don't own a Bugatti.
Pengarr
Actually, since it's Italian, and already ends with an i, wouldn't the plural just be "Bugatti"? I mean, while we're being dicks about this.
joshuaiwjew
Maybe not because in English most plural words end in an s so we apply that rule to foreign language words too?
barbarhack
IF it was an Italian noun, regular masculine Italian pluralised nouns end in an I, and singular start with O: (S) Bugatto -> (P) Bugatti
barbarhack
Also, it could be an irregular noun, and go from E -> I: (S) Bugatte -> (P) Bugatti, however Bugatti is a French company
Pengarr
The company was founded in Molsheim while it was German, by an Italian man. Molsheim is now part of France, but the name comes from Italy.
Treppzz
*lisp* Actually it's French
PapiBlanco

Bugatti Chiron hasn't had a top speed recorded yet, so that title goes to the Koenigsegg Agera RS.
PizzaTammer
Not mass produced. But the point of this was every person I've ever met when it was mega popular was because of speed. I was in hs so...
PizzaTammer
Maybe that's why I have this interpretation of why it's wanted.
live2dyec4
Koenigsegg is life
12rt2345g342563
It's not even the fastest at the moment. You could build a faster custom car for an order of magnitude less money.
r31830
Not a street-legal one.
MrMcCookieMuffin
It's more likely that and the status symbol associated with it honestly.
SuperRockinMrMagic
One thing the Bugatti has going for it is that it's real. Tesla is unveiling a lot of great concepts while struggling to get model 3 out
Badfish941
Thet revealed it last week. Bugatti revealed the Chiron years ago and theres only a few on the road
SuperRockinMrMagic
There's a few on the road because that's how they want it. You don't think a VAG subsidiary could churn em out if they wanted?
MrE158
They're primarily showpiece/prestige and testbed items. The Veyron cost about £5m per car to make, and sold around the £1m mark each.
iLovDogs
To be fair, bugatti only makes a handful a year. Tesla already made a couple of these. As a super car goes, one is enough to make it real.
iUsed2LikeBulge
2020 is a while away ... Will they come up with something?
Cortezdelanoche
Something more expensive? You betcha!
misspoopsalot
Unfortunately car manufacturers aren’t like electronics manufacturers, they don’t really have that fast of a product cycle.
gnuclear
Well, AMD's Zen architecture took about four years to design. They started from the ground up, instead of building from an existing design.
juggernaut1
Neither does Tesla. They usually underdeliver at first then gradually make up for it
RiddSann
Bugatti ? Nope, the Veyron is already getting old compared to both. Maybe Koenigsegg. Maybe. I kinda hope so, but they're hybrid so....
RiddSann
(Veyron is old compared to both : Bugatti takes too muche time to make a new model, and the jumps between them are not big enough)
bbirbb
This is a comparison with the Chiron, not the Veyron. The Veyron is no longer in production.
RiddSann
Ik, never said it was, said it was "old compared to both" referring to the Chiron and Roadster, hence my 2nd message.
bbirbb
You mentioned roadster and Ksg, then said "both" which refers back to previous two, being roadster and Ksg.
bbirbb
And why bring up the Veyron at all? It's irrelevant to this picture and the 2020 comment as a whole.
ratcamper

ratcamper
That's awesome! Nice car but I think the range is the real attention getter. Suddenly the market expanded massively.
PullShporttel
I hope they give it a full title like Model R P200T
DarthSidiot
Silly question but how does one buy a tesla? Is it financed? What sort of paperwork is required and does it have trade in options? 1/2
TeslaFilledFuture
So, you can either buy one online or in a gallery. You can pay fully in cash, lease it, or take out a loan from us. You'll need a decent 1/?
TeslaFilledFuture
Credit score to lease or loan, and a down payment is usually due at signing (typically around $5000). It's really just like buying any 2/?
TeslaFilledFuture
Car, but you can buy online. If you go cash, we take either credit/debit, or a direct transfer from a bank account. Hope this helps! 3/3
DarthSidiot
I read somewhere that you could trade in Teslas for upgraded models (much like phones) on some sort of contract but I couldn't verify it 2/2
TeslaFilledFuture
You can! Lots of people like to have the latest and greatest, so many people lease for that reason, but you can trade in your current 1/2
TeslaFilledFuture
Car (it doesn’t even have to be a Tesla!) for a discount on a new transaction.

He has a tendency to over estimate/exaggerate things. For example, SpaceX rockets are not the most powerful in history as he claims.

Speed, accessory usage, outside tempature all dramatically affect the range on Teslas. 620 is the max
mike13815
Speed, accessory usage, outside tempature all dramatically affect the range on every vehicle. FTFY.
HairytheSheep
Not dramatically, gas vehicles dont generaly fluctuate more than 3 or so mpg unless towing. Cold weather kills the range on battery cars
Electriccarsbestcars
Yep. I'm still a little blown away by how much power god damn wind shield wipers eat.
IAmBoredAtWork
On Tesla specifically or all vehicles?
noctynight
I don’t race, so yeah, that’s a winner in my book.
IAmBoredAtWork
if you don't race maybe a roadster wouldn't be the most practical car only 4 seats (2 for small people only) and not much room for baggage
noctynight
Electriccarsbestcars
Na, its 60mph. We can get the full 296miles on our S if we auto pilot at 60 on I5 on a not rainy day.
TinyRocktopus
The large battery was probably to reduce the overheating problem the range is just a side effect
MerToo
trick is to have a very good drag coefficient, and not blow a lot of energy on spoilers (which you shouldn't need on a highway...).
playstation360
So it can't corner at speed.
MerToo
dunno. With computer controlled electric AWD it should do pretty well, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Bugatti can pull higher G
playstation360
It's going to be heavy as balls, and have no extra downforce.
roadhunter
And leave the mother in law at home.
adriedupoldprune
It has a 200 kWh battery. The model s 100d has 100 kWh and 335 miles of range. Sooo math checks out.

adriedupoldprune
https://jalopnik.com/heres-what-a-battery-researcher-told-us-about-the-tesla-1820558723
adriedupoldprune
The pack is probably massive. The one for the semi will be bigger. Speculation is around 800 kWh to 1 mWh.
filben7
Yeah but it also has to be a new denser architecture or something. That is truly huge.
thatSteveFan
Wait isn't that starting to get into the energy of a decent bomb at that point? That's an insane amount of energy, and I can only imagine..
ReLeVaNtUSERNAMESareReLeVaNT
Shit the 100D has over 950lbs of battery on board so roughly 1700-1800 lbs of battery on what supposed to be a sports car?
Hoptimonium
Unless they found a way to double the storage without doubling the weight.
ReLeVaNtUSERNAMESareReLeVaNT
Chemistry doesn't work that way there are minor things you can do to make it more efficient but its fairly minuscule. Also Tesla is too
teabaggerino
It is quite a lot, but the batteries are in the floor (on current ones). The insanely low center of gravity partially comepnsates.
ReLeVaNtUSERNAMESareReLeVaNT
The problem isn't the CG they've been putting the batteries in the floor since the original Roadster its the tires. Momentum is still 1/x
IDontKnowWhatToDoAnymoreAndImTired
In fact, the low center of gravity actually helps improve handling.

So real-world use won't be too far off from that, then? That's pretty good.
filben7
Minimum legal highway speed is 40mph.
Anonawesome
Typically just 15 below the speed limit. If you do 40 on the highways out here that are 80, you will die if you don't get pulled over first.

SometimesIKnowStuff
Okay, my last question seems quite weird right now but his comment was at -2 when I made it -1 and posted "Why downvotes?"
bigeasy44
Isn't Bugatti's range limited by the limits of the tires? They have a tank only enough tank so that you can go all out from full & will run
Vyrro
Its max speed is limited by its tyres
bigeasy44
Out of fuel before the tires fail. Letting the tesla go for almost 3X further sounds negligent.
IAmTheEarlyEvening
Also, when the Bugatti runs out of range, it takes about 3 minutes to "charge it up" again. Not a couple of hours.
lAlwaysUpvotePugs
What? Top speed is limited by tires, not range. Range is at normal speeds.
ForMyOwnAmusement
huh? Pretty sure that range isn't at max speed...
IAmBoredAtWork
yes, it is not, and that applies to every vehicle...
