Why is that nuts? There's a lot of engineering in that style of system, and they don't sell a lot. It's called supply and demand. 1/2
No real demand = limited supply = higher price.
ffilm
My portable will keep 3-4 rooms tolerable, if we keep the lights off and don't cook. It'll get 2 rooms cold.
Just make sure to get a drip bucket for the water runoff, unless you want an ocean in your house
Most also have a 3 or 4 quart container built in, mine will fill it in 4-5 hours. You'll need to vent it through a window. Quite handy.
mrmitchell2
But that's only going to be useful for a tiny bit of the year, some summers we don't even get a summer. Does not really seem worth it.
Well, global climate's goin down the shitter, it may become more useful. If not, at least you'll have a comfortable rest of summer
UK portables normally dump the water on the output coils, and evaporate it out the hose you put out the window.

MechaMarshmallow
It's fine outside. The problem is that buildings here are constructed to stay nice and toasty in winter. They're giant heat sinks.

Making the building a heat sink would make it colder, not hotter, since it would absorb all the excess heat being generated inside.

I just took a trip to Dublin then London. None of the placed I stayed had AC. Some evenings were fairly unpleasant.
That's a beautiful summer day even in northern Ontario, and we have black flies
Same for Oregon lol

Atalung
Man, it was 84 yesterday and I thought it was nice
It's all relative!
cogs
That's like a San Diego summer on the coastal strip (no a/c in the older homes there, either). Quite pleasant as long as there's a breeze.
Dragoncrazed
It's different. Like I would rather take the 105F 90% humidity I experienced in Thailand over 85F in Washington DC. Some places just suck.
Well, in Thailand you have $5 barracuda and kids walking their baby elephants by the open air bar. That's pretty hard to compete with.
zpaddy
No air conditioning. My flat in London was 35°C at 9am this morning.
ive0been0sporked
Why don't you have air conditioning? Even a small, cheap window unit can cool a whole apartment.(Im from US and genuinely curious.)
Also, if it's the humidity that really sucks, why not get a dehumidifier? Those really help with heat too. For me, dry heat> high humidity
restless0
Because it's only really that hot for a few days a year so we'd rather complain than start replacing windows
I rent. We have heating but no air con. Can't afford a unit as am only a PhD student. Barely afford rent!
SgtChowdown
if you can afford a london flat you can afford a 125 quid window a/c unit
themexicanwave
Not market here. I don't know but I'd be surprised if you could her AC for £125. Fuck. A shitty freestanding will be £200+. Source: got one
reverseparkingonly
Whats the point though in ac when we get hot weather about 10 days of the year?!
"oh well cba to save up and then pop down to the argos, gran you'll just have to tough it out with a few cornettos"
When those 10 days of a year regularly kill off your elderly folks, BITE THE BULLET AND BUY A FUCKEN A/C YOU TWIT
FOR TEN DAYS A YEAR, EVERY FUCKEN YEAR
If you can afford a flat in London, you're lucky if you can afford food!! Also, most landlords won't allow you to install a window unit.
The window units I'm talking about are not the kind that require a mount. They are held by the pressure of the window atop or next to it
Also, you guys have benefits programs. I know this because I live in the US, the land of benefits programs but worse.
They're like a window fan, only fatter to fit the coils into it
Well seen as I'm a PhD student scraping by, I doubt it.
Husband's a PhD student. We can barely afford food....and we don't have to live in London.
Do you work? Are you on benefits? Jesus H Christ, you people, I live in the US! YOU CAN GET FOOD EASIER THAN I CAN
I don't have to live in London. But with a PhD at UCL and my gf getting a job near wimbledon it'd be hard to move to Leeds or wherever.
Where do you get a £125 AC unit?
You're normally looking at ~300 for a floor unit with a hose out the window...
A brief glimpse on Amazon UK showed multiple styles of units from 99 quid and up.
Hah, those are "swamp coolers". Cheapest actual AC on amazon is an 8000 btu at £292.72.
I looked up a US style window unit the other day, a "snip" at only £504, plus the £1000 to replace windows with ones it would fit..
Wow, is that for a small window unit? I did the conversion and that's literally $100 more than what I spent on mine. Why so expensive?
A nicer one with a remote and a multi-temp programmable thermostat runs equivalent to about 150-200 quid, depending on BTUs
Ok I'll give you that, mine is rather simple, but still it works great and I've had it a long time. You don't need a fancy one
I'm in America. An 8000BTU window unit costs the USD equivalent of about 125 quid
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=8000BTU&oq=8000BTU&aqs=chrome..69i57&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#q=8000BTU&tbs=vw:l,ss:44,p_ord:r&tbm=shop
I don't know what I am looking for exactly, but that is what google showed me searching for 8000btu. I can only assume these are similar.
p75369
I'm going to go with supply and demand. Like snow gear, noone wants to buy things that'll only be useful a couple of days a year.
But it's not like it stops being useful after a couple uses. Those things last a long time. I've had mine going on five years now.

Do you actually mean Europeans or do you mean Brits? Spain in the height of summer is like an oven.
FunFrenchStuff
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/10/science/air-conditioner-global-warming.html
Scientificevidence
As a European, if it's 80+ i'm pretty fucking sure the world is ending. Also, stop using so much power and just learn to complain.
TwoVhsCopiesOfGoodfellas
You know Europe is a big fuck off multicultural place yes? Americans saying "Europeans" makes them look dumb.
Goodmerlinpeen
Africa is like, a country, Tricia
snclash3731415
Almost like the way Europeans often just assume the exact same thing about Americans?
WhatzitTooya
No, I'm shitting on you cause your imbecile in charge says it's all fake and will probably make it worse.
Killertortilla
The Australians laugh at the Americans thinking they are tough
Solidblueness
The insane rednecks without shirts getting bit by fist sized mosquitoes think they are tough. The rest of us want our aircon.
pbjcrazy
those from arizona laugh right back.
Goodmerlinpeen
Pretty soon it's just a pair of dudes with heatstroke laughing deliriously in the baking sun, their sanity just a dream they once had.
pbjcrazy
me too, sans the heat. Im just falling apart lol
killersoda275
Hey England, mind sharing some of that hot weather. Norway's just getting rain. Might have to go into viking again, tax some sunny weather.
Seidmadr
Hey! Sweden here! Could you please send us the rain? Everything is dry as tinder over here. And I'm not talking about the app.
killersoda275
I'd love to. We haven't had more than two days of sun at the time since "summer" started. However we've had mostly rain, i just want sun.
Cutsforhugs
As a swede, no thanks. Rain, snow and cold is so much better. =_='
killersoda275
Yes, cold the is better. But living where we sometimes have rain more than half the year. I would like some more sunny days. Dont need heat.
FlightRisk3154
Fucking take it, working in a steel shed which retains all of the heat.
tormady
Did someone say raids? - Fellow Norwegian
killersoda275
I heard Lindesfarne was really sunny.
electronurd
No I think he said rapes - England
killersoda275
Depends on how quickly you give us the sunny weather. We don't want to do the r-word, but it's up to you.
nvdheide
Australian dealing with a frigid 20C winter here, please send some of your heat down our way.
killersoda275
Wow, that's about as hot as it gets here. We almost die if it toos 25C, it's so damn warm.
nvdheide
I think I might stick to the warm down here then :p your country is otherwise beautiful though so you've got that to make you warm and fuzzy
killersoda275
No, warm is bad 15 C is perfect. I just want some sun, we only get damn rain.
thisisthelastusername
Meanwhile when I see it's only 29°C (84°F) with 40% humidity in London.
kittyperfect
Is that hot to them?
GlenL
I live in northern ontario and that weather sounds absolutely lovely. 40% humidity in the summer? That sounds lovely
thisisthelastusername
I'm in Maine and spend a lot of time in NS, 100% the same.
MechaMarshmallow
It's fine outside. The problem is that buildings here are constructed to stay nice and toasty in winter. They're giant heat sinks.
causality
Making the building a heat sink would make it colder, not hotter, since it would absorb all the excess heat being generated inside.
MetalGreymon
With radiators inside, not air conditioning.
sureasyourebornyourenevergoingtoseenounicorn
For people that colonized half the world you'd think they'd be a bit better at tolerating hot weather
ArtOzz
Yes, because someone whose ancestors, ancestors, ancestors lived in perma mild cold and wet should be adaptive to fucking hot.
RiskItForATotalBiscuit
Our homes are designed to keep you warm in the winter, not cool in the summer.
squishybaker
it's probably because the average temp in the UK is 11c.
JustFuckingWatchCowboyBebop
The ones that colonized are still there, being tolerant of the heat. Source: I'm in Tennessee
MisterOp
It's like saying "Oh for people historically famous for wielding axes and rowing boats, Norwegians aren't very good at.. etc"
sureasyourebornyourenevergoingtoseenounicorn
I am fantastic at rowing a boat and I owe it all to my Nordic ancestry
PJVeddersGirl
Yeah. Wasn't me personally or, let's say, nearly all of my fellow countrymen
pres2pond
All the people who can tolerate and enjoy hot weather pissed off already. Why do you think they colonised half the world?
higilybop
We don't have AC, we have no fans our average temp is 11 degrees centigrade and that's how I like it, not this bullshit weather
chooseday
What are you on about you mad man? This is the only sun we get. Savour this shit!
higilybop
Its kinda hard to savour something that burns me and makes me want to chop up my skin so heat can dissipate
chooseday
Bare through the pain and you'll get a good tan, have faith.
Armored0Titan0
You people would fucking die if you came to Texas.
Kingpoopdik
Would rather be in my parents A/C'd house in Texas than mine without a/c in England right now. Sleeping buttass neked every night. It's hot.
patotheduck
Not because of the heat though ey?
ChloeRed
No, because buildings in Texas are designed with those temps in mind. If you built a house to UK spec in texas, you'd call it an oven 1/2
ChloeRed
and cook with it! ;)
Glomgore
Yeah a brick house is not good for 90+
spookytwigg
To be fair, it's too fucking hot outside as well. It's just worse indoors.
weedbratton
Always get AC...even when I'm skiing in vail I'll open the windows at night because those people like to cook inside their homes
higilybop
The thing is though normally there is no point getting AC because it is cold most of the year and AC is expensive
weedbratton
It's worth the money of it but I also understand ...u know with climate change it's never too late! Lol
altxatu
That's quite nice.
chaoticyoyo
It's 120°F for the next few days here in Phoenix. Yay for soul sucking heat!
VHSdreamz
As a Canadian, all yall start freaking out over an inch of snow
thefrompleman
our houses aren't designed for this, they just warm up to a nice toasty 40°C and roast the occupants
chrisluissanc
laughs in Floridian
toriapinklotus
At least in Florida you seem to be able to hide inside! Been to Florida a few times in August and I could sleep. Can't sleep here.
Mouthhug
It's been overcast and muggy as hell for 3 weeks in Clearwater. I miss the sun.
soulscythe
I mean I sweat uncontrollably if sitting still in low 20's (centigrade), we're all designed differently.
giveittomestraightlikeapearcidermadefrom100percentpears
The UK hasn't seen 3 days consecutively at 30°C for over 2 decades. So we're not in Death Valley! Or the Sahara! But for us this is very hot
giveittomestraightlikeapearcidermadefrom100percentpears
I meant to write 5.. The heat is hurting my brain..
Rip42
That's still hot enough to start killing old people.
giveittomestraightlikeapearcidermadefrom100percentpears
Do you mean the weather killing old people, or me getting so annoyed in the heat and old people dawdling that i kill them?
BigNasty55
It's gotta be worse than that for all the bitching they do
catscatsyeahcats
I just took a trip to Dublin then London. None of the placed I stayed had AC. Some evenings were fairly unpleasant.
thedarkcanuck
That's a beautiful summer day even in northern Ontario, and we have black flies
kittyperfect
Same for Oregon lol
GlenL
I'm in sudbury and if it's 29C I don't think it'll go below 70% humidity. 40% sounds divine.
Atalung
Man, it was 84 yesterday and I thought it was nice
PJVeddersGirl
It's all relative!
cogs
That's like a San Diego summer on the coastal strip (no a/c in the older homes there, either). Quite pleasant as long as there's a breeze.
Dragoncrazed
It's different. Like I would rather take the 105F 90% humidity I experienced in Thailand over 85F in Washington DC. Some places just suck.
cogs
Well, in Thailand you have $5 barracuda and kids walking their baby elephants by the open air bar. That's pretty hard to compete with.
zpaddy
No air conditioning. My flat in London was 35°C at 9am this morning.
ive0been0sporked
Why don't you have air conditioning? Even a small, cheap window unit can cool a whole apartment.(Im from US and genuinely curious.)
ive0been0sporked
Also, if it's the humidity that really sucks, why not get a dehumidifier? Those really help with heat too. For me, dry heat> high humidity
restless0
Because it's only really that hot for a few days a year so we'd rather complain than start replacing windows
zpaddy
SgtChowdown
"oh well cba to save up and then pop down to the argos, gran you'll just have to tough it out with a few cornettos"
SgtChowdown
When those 10 days of a year regularly kill off your elderly folks, BITE THE BULLET AND BUY A FUCKEN A/C YOU TWIT
SgtChowdown
FOR TEN DAYS A YEAR, EVERY FUCKEN YEAR
toriapinklotus
If you can afford a flat in London, you're lucky if you can afford food!! Also, most landlords won't allow you to install a window unit.
SgtChowdown
The window units I'm talking about are not the kind that require a mount. They are held by the pressure of the window atop or next to it
SgtChowdown
Also, you guys have benefits programs. I know this because I live in the US, the land of benefits programs but worse.
SgtChowdown
They're like a window fan, only fatter to fit the coils into it
zpaddy
Well seen as I'm a PhD student scraping by, I doubt it.
toriapinklotus
Husband's a PhD student. We can barely afford food....and we don't have to live in London.
SgtChowdown
Do you work? Are you on benefits? Jesus H Christ, you people, I live in the US! YOU CAN GET FOOD EASIER THAN I CAN
zpaddy
I don't have to live in London. But with a PhD at UCL and my gf getting a job near wimbledon it'd be hard to move to Leeds or wherever.
ChloeRed
Where do you get a £125 AC unit?
ChloeRed
You're normally looking at ~300 for a floor unit with a hose out the window...
SgtChowdown
A brief glimpse on Amazon UK showed multiple styles of units from 99 quid and up.
ChloeRed
Hah, those are "swamp coolers". Cheapest actual AC on amazon is an 8000 btu at £292.72.
ChloeRed
I looked up a US style window unit the other day, a "snip" at only £504, plus the £1000 to replace windows with ones it would fit..
ive0been0sporked
Wow, is that for a small window unit? I did the conversion and that's literally $100 more than what I spent on mine. Why so expensive?
SgtChowdown
A nicer one with a remote and a multi-temp programmable thermostat runs equivalent to about 150-200 quid, depending on BTUs
ive0been0sporked
Ok I'll give you that, mine is rather simple, but still it works great and I've had it a long time. You don't need a fancy one
SgtChowdown
I'm in America. An 8000BTU window unit costs the USD equivalent of about 125 quid
FlightRisk3154
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=8000BTU&oq=8000BTU&aqs=chrome..69i57&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#q=8000BTU&tbs=vw:l,ss:44,p_ord:r&tbm=shop
FlightRisk3154
I don't know what I am looking for exactly, but that is what google showed me searching for 8000btu. I can only assume these are similar.
p75369
I'm going to go with supply and demand. Like snow gear, noone wants to buy things that'll only be useful a couple of days a year.
ive0been0sporked
But it's not like it stops being useful after a couple uses. Those things last a long time. I've had mine going on five years now.
