From Start to Finish

Starting

Rotten wood on the front of the grill needs to be removed and the tile around the grill has lost its grip.

Demo Part One

Wood Removed

All rotten wood now removed.

End of Day One

All demo on the front now complete Tomorrow I will remove the Grill and tile.

Bought Tiles!

I took measurements of the grill island and created a a small sketch which is featured on the piece of paper in the photo. From this I calculated the number of tiles I would need. I then started laying out the tiles.

Oops!

I missed taking photos of stripping the top tiles off and grinding off the mortar on top - that was a pain in the ass. Using a chissel and hammer I removed all the bumps and leveled it out for the new tiles. I bought Latex paint to add an addition weather barrier for the new tiles. As you can tell there were a few holes that will be patched later on.

After layup

I marked each tile with a corresponding number for easy layup with the new mortar.

Laying up the top and side

I layed the top in a pretty seamless swoop. The side I did the bottom layer first then let it harden for 24 hours to come back to do the rest.

Grouted the Top

I grouted the top using black grout (sealant mixed in)

Side layup

I laid the front in one day after letting each layer harden for about an hour. I also used a make-shift wood support to keep additive force on the tiles as I was scared they would fall off.

Finished Side and top

All surfaces as Grouted just in time for the rain to hit! I quickly threw a tarp onto the island.

All done!

Grill in place ready to rock and roll!
