Not ragging on you, but I feel like "perhaps the most famous name in racing" is a stretch.
I can name many drivers from different disciplines of racing, but I've never heard of this person.
I mean, maybe in the US, but...

Been watching motorsports for over 30 years. Was watching this race live when it happened, it was unbelievable especially after seeing Tony Stewart's big wreck earlier in the race.

I remember watching it live on my little 16" CRT TV in my bedroom. I was only 10, so I had no idea just how impactful that crash was going to be... Let alone did I know what other impactful events were yet to happen that year...

Yep, had nothing do to with helmet type, and everything to do with the fact he wasn't wearing a HANS device, which he described to the press as "that damn noose". He was killed by a basilar skull fracture, which is exactly what the HANS device is designed to protect against.

Sadly it took Blaise Alexander's death in the 2001 ARCA race at Charlotte (in October) for them to make it mandatory. Dale's death wasn't even the last...and it was the fourth in a span of about 10 months.
