Isn't Notchbacks just a Type 3? I've never heard of a Type 31. Typo?

Type 3 covers all of them. 31 is notchback, 36 is squareback, 34 is the karman Ghia ....

Gotcha... Had a friend years ago that had 1 of the only 6 that were registered in Oregon. It was bad ass when he finished it.

We had a variant (squareback) when I was growing up; an great-aunt had a Karmann Ghia but I don't know whether it was a 14 or a 34.

Typ 21 also covers Fastback, which is strange for VW. I should know, as I have both a Notchback and a Fastback and both are type 31's.

I was always confused why the fastbacks were also 31s.

I never understood it either. I guess VW must have thought that since both cars are "sedans", they get the same designation.
