I recommend anything by Ian M Banks! A little baffling to start with but in terms of sci-fi world building, no one does it better!
brightink23
I have a pibble named Olive too! She is best girl!

CONGRATS!!!! wait what a crazy coincidence...I’m in my third year of college, get 49k a year, and I’m a double major in politics and theatre
LastNightsRambler
Nice! I'm so glad double majoring with theatre is doable.
YouSufferWithCognitiveDissonance
How are you going to pay for the other 3 years of school?
LastNightsRambler
That's annual* (* some of it must be reapplied for and may fluctuate more/less depending on family finances or lack thereof)
NutshellGulag
The Ray Electromatic Mysteries by Adam Christopher are pretty good if you like hardboiled detectives and robots.
TheMeatClownCometh
Philip k dick. Read all his short stories

Loved A Scanner Darkly!
TheMeatClownCometh

Ubik and second variety are awesome. And sooo many more

The classics: Asimov, Arthur C. Clark, Heinlein. Starship Troopers(terrible movie) is really fab. It's a treatise on Citizenship. must read
buggerlugs

Jack Kent Cooke scholarship gets you 120k over 3 years.
iexist
Super cool, $40k/yr scholarship and financial aid changed my life 15 years ago. Make the most of it
LastNightsRambler
I will, I promise.
spiciestmemelord
How the heck do you get scholarships worth so much?!
Listeningtokpop
Academic, minority, need-based. There's lots of different ways. Sadly, academic doesn't do much. Most of mine were bc I'm Native American.
Listeningtokpop
Was 3.9 GPA with ACT score of 29, one college offered me $1500 in scholarships.... Ended up going elsewhere bc they offered me $40k.
iexist
Grades and community service got me $30k/yr and parents went bankrupt and state gave me $10k/yr
YabudaYabudaYabuda
Congrats! What are you planning on studying?

Getting a Masters in Being a Good Boy.
LastNightsRambler
Well, at that particular school, I'm looking to double major (or major/minor) in biology (with ecology/conservation focus) and theatre arts
MrsWhatsit
UC Irvine?
LastNightsRambler
Nope, but Irvine's a great school.
Ravenbreaker
Those are two wildly different fields. What are you gonna do with each of them? I assume they dont go together career wise.
LastNightsRambler
I love both bio and theatre, and people always told me I'd have to pick one, but I'm hoping to keep both in my life in some way.
Ravenbreaker
Well hey! I hope you find joy in both of them and a good job in at least one of them!
TheGreatBlondini
Well done, btw. I am pretty sure that kind of scholarship doesn't just show up in the mail. Lot of hard work.
LastNightsRambler
Thank you so much. It's been difficult but very worth the work.
Nordenfeldt
Nothing my wrong with double majoring, good on you, but usually best to choose vaguely related or complimentary subjects.
LastNightsRambler
You're probably right. My reason for my choices is because I have the other to take refuge in if one gives me temporary problems
Nordenfeldt
Except no career ever will look at those two and say ‘I need both of those’.
LastNightsRambler
I will say that my experience in theatre has benefited me as a speaker and communicator, which has been an invaluable asset in my STEM work.
TheGreatBlondini
My brother studied theatre. He loves it. Actually had a nervous breakdown when changed career. Went back to acting.
LastNightsRambler
I love theatre and no matter what I wind up doing I want to know I can keep it in my life.
leleary
That science/theater double major is exactly what I’m doing!! It’s fantastic but tiring! You’re gunna love it!
LastNightsRambler
How's it going? What obstacles are you facing in doubling in such different fields?
TheHaloFollower
DUDE DUDE IM DOING THE EXCACT SAME THING AT UGA! DUDE. Well I’m trying to but DUDE HOLY SHIT! IM NOT ALONE! IM NOT ALONE!
LastNightsRambler

LastNightsRambler
And they told us we'd have to pick one!
Luc1ferSam
I'm dual majoring right now (Electronic Media and Film Studies and then also Communication Technology). Its rough, but worth it.
LastNightsRambler
That's a whole lot! What resources do you have to manage that with? Will you graduate within 4 years?
Luc1ferSam
Yeah I've been doing 15cr/semester as well as classes in between. My school has a whole studio to work with and an internship is 1/2
Luc1ferSam
required for us to graduate, so we can get a foot in the door for employment. I go to Eastern Michigan University.
jmega
Yes- take advantage and double major! Have fun! Make it memorable and don’t do drugs! :)
LastNightsRambler
Finally, someone who doesn't think I'm crazy for double majoring :P
laxstateofmind
Double majoring isn’t all that difficult (unless they’re both hard sciences). Have to plan your class schedule well. I did history+French.
laxstateofmind
Also, if you have gen ed requirements, find the classes that knock out more than one requirement at a time!!
LastNightsRambler
I'm in community college (dual enrollment) rn clearing out English, Calculus, Chemistry, intro Bio... Hopefully most of my credits transfer
pajamallamadrama
I double majored in Atmospheric Science & Broadcast Journalism with a minor degree in Communications. I don't think you're crazy at all! >
pajamallamadrama
Shoot for the stars my dude! I believe in you!
jmega
For a school that costs that much per year- get the most out of it. I'm hoping TA will be fun/challenging for you balancing out the rest of>
jmega
Your courses.
LastNightsRambler
(ohmygod the school costs SO much don't even get me started) If I go there, I'll definitely maximize my time.
