Atheist truths

Help your fellow man.

“Right and wrong” is subjective. If anything, God has been more consistent than man in those regards. Pre and post Christ

I'm having the same discussion with my son's dad. It always ends up in a fight.

One can also have faith without religion

"If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward, then brother that person is a piece of shit"- Rust Cohle

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

Dumb quote is dumb... (any reason) keeping a decent person decent means they’re a decent person... because decent

No shit :)

I have VERY little empathy and relatively strong morals. My morals come from rationality, probably comparable to Kantianism.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Empathy is not always the right thing though...

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 7

But with out religion how do I know who to hate and oppress?

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 7

Human beings are pretty adept at that, religion not needed.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

How is this truth? Sounds like an opinion to me. What are your reasons for saying that this is truth?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 7

All the very moral and kindly atheist people we know, for a start.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There IS a separation between religion and ethics (though not some ethical systems) but ethics doesn't require empathy.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Someone's never studied ethics.

10 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 10

Or religion.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 10

Yeah aren't most popular moral theories based on rationality?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

You also don't need religion to have faith.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

well i guess it would be nice if i could touch your bodaay i know not everybodaay has got a body like maaay

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Noooice!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You can have spirituality, morality, community, hope, and transcendent love without religion. It does no unique good and lots of unique bad.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 9

If a given religion is true, it certainly does a unique good: telling the truth about how things actually are.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sure, if a given religion was true. But religion makes extraordinary claims that require extraordinary evidence which is sorely lacking.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How would you define "extraordinary"

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Extraordinary evidence? Lets start with the books. I mean, the fact that I could improve the Bible or the Quran in seconds is pretty damning

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

These are supposed to be the greatest books ever written, and yet in terms of morality and explaining the world they are deeply flawed.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm still unsure if your definition bc there is this extraordinary claim that extraordinary evidence requires extraordinary evidence but>>

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>>>there seems to be no extraordinary evidence to back it up...just common sense. So, doesn't this claim refute itself?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I want to type out an educated response as to how fucking wrong you are, but I only have 140 characters, so *tipping intensifies*

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

On which part? His past sentence is absolutely true. There is no good religion can do, that cannot be done in a secular way.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

The part of them doing unique bad. The idea that most religious people, or even a minute fraction, cause evil is asinine.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Is it though? Belief that you hold the unique truth, belief in paradise and martyrdom, none of these seem dangerous to you?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Throw a dart at the map, pick the nearest church, and visit it. I guarantee you the people there are kind and peaceful, moreso than you.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Religion is one of the few things that can make good people do bad things, while still thinking they're doing good. Maybe not the only thing

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That doesn't mean it's ubiquitous. There's lots of forms of evil in the world.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most "religious" people have no idea what actual religion is. Martin Luther King Jr and Sir Isaac Newton did and are my heroes.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Real talk bro. Real talk.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Completely agree.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

also one of two things may happen here. bottom person gets helped up,or top person gets dragged down.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Atheists truths.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Works until you realize that most people are selfish and blame "arbitrary morality" for judging their shitty behavior toward others.

10 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 14

I have not ever met anyone who uses moral relativity/arbitrary morality to justify their actions. I would not assume "most people" do.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

You've never heard someone says, "that's okay for you but for me..."

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of the most egregious uses of 'most' I've ever seen.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Plus if you're only doing something because of what retribution the Sky Man might visit upon you, I doubt religion gave you morals either

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 14

Following the "Sky Man" is (should be) in pursuit of finding out what is right, to do what is right. Religious or not, this is a hard task.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's sky cake - Patton Oswald.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 6

Oh sky cake... Why are you so delicious!!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Pow, right in the christians.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 11

I'll admit. I loled!

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

Getting downvoted by religious people, I'm not even mad. ,)

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

If I've learned one thing from my ethics teacher, it's that you can justify almost anything using one school of thought or another.

10 years ago | Likes 146 Dislikes 4

Difference between argue a justification and to justify. Take logic also ;)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Damn son, replying on a 5 month old comment?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's the new teen craze, sweeping the nation!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haha yeah. I was so happy to read someone who was into ethics I had to suggest more philosophy! Haha

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As long as you have a code, a man's got to have a code

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Up up down down left right left right b a

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine is "Everything in moderation". So often I see people online say "I never/always do this or that",But you really gotta make the (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

best decision, not the same one you always do based on the situation. (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Only a Sith deals in absolutes.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Preach it, some intellectuals consider atheism a religion

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 12

It is a religion. They can't prove that God doesn't exist any more than I can prove he does. Both take faith in a belief.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 17

Congrats, you've fallen for a bullshit definition of atheism. Atheists don't try to, nor are they required, to prove there is no god.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No it isn't. You are a-unicorn. Do you practice a religion according to that?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Not exatly, it's... "There's no reason to believe god exists, therefore I don't". Just like you don't believe in the easter bunny.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

Atheism doesn't posit that God doesn't exist. Atheism is merely a lack in a belief in a god or gods.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Right, if I tell you there is a tea pot on the other side of Mars, how you gunna prove me right, how you gunna prove me wrong..

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 5

Fly to Mars and see.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

The point is what is asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. You don't need to disprove something to disbelieve it.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Atheism isn't the declaration of no God, it is saying the evidence put forward isn't sufficient so therefore it isn't accepted

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

The burden or proof is still on those making the claim there is a gpd

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

Exactly

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

You should read up on this thing called the burden of proof. It's pretty nifty

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

That's my point. They say that because there is no proof He doesn't exist. I have proof that they won't accept because they assume God 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 10

Doesn't exist. Everyone has somthing at the core of their being that they only know because of faith. I just admit it.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 9

More agnostic, so I have a certain respect for both sides, and I don't think that science and spiritually have to be at odds with each 3/?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

exists for you. Thats fine, but is that proof scientifically measurable? Is it provable objectively? Let me say that I'm not an atheist 2/?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

A lack of belief is not a claim in the opposition. Atheists don't believe a claim. They don't claim that there is no god.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

faith is about belief and personal experience. I think with quantum physics we're learning just how much our subjective experience and 5/?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

other. It is a charged discussion. I believe the reason for this is it's simply too subjective. Science is about empirical evidence, 4//

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

objective reality is connected, how our consciousness can affect the nature of matter at the smallest levels. That's exciting to me. 6/6

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Grats on choosing a random belief and admitting it's arbitrary, yet sticking to it, I guess. Yay you...

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

It's really not about assumptions, it's actually about avoiding assumtions. You have your subjective experience which may prove that God 1/?
