My dad grew up in a poor area of town. North Omaha for anyone that is interested. His dad was an alcoholic and chose to buy beer and gamble on horse races instead of paying for rent, electricity, water, groceries, etc. The story that stuck in my mind the most: my dad and mom gave my grandpa money so he could take the bus home from work. They didn't hear from him for a few hours. They saw him walking down the street with a case of beer in one hand and a handle of vodka in the other. He chose booze and walking hours instead of riding the bus home. When I heard this story I realized the severity of addiction.
My dad married my mom in 1983. He was working 50 hours a week and went to school at night while my mom also worked full time and gave birth to my older sister. He decided he would rather have a second child (me) instead of going for a masters degree. I wish my dad knew at that time that all three of kids would get masters degrees.
I never got to meet my grandpa. From what I have heard, he sucked. But he taught my dad to be the best dad in the entire world so I can't complain.
