I've had terriers. They hide snacks, but they also take care of babies. My kids were closely guarded by my dog, 24/7

I can't speak for dogs, but a few different mammalian female species will bury unpleasant things (such as newborn pups) to kill them

I've seen this in dogs who are trying to hide their food from others so it's not eaten or taken away.

More likely it's an instinct to copy pack leaders (humans for pet dogs). Probably saw the parents doing this and now just copies them.
