Many Boeing 777 and 787 planes have a hidden stairway that leads up to a small windowless room above passengers where they can go chill for a while without having someone ask them for a ginger ale.

This is what it looks like.

Don't think you'll get in there by just pretending you're trying to find the bathroom. This room is usually tucked say behind a door that doesn't really even look like a door and it usually requires a passcode to get in.

Some planes Iike the 773 have overhead storage bins that lead to these secret rooms. No staircase required!

And just in case you find yourself in one of these rooms, there will be secret signs like this to let you know you done fucked up.

This is what the bunks look like - about 7 or 8 per bunk on the 787.

The 777 packs in anywhere from 6 to 10 bunks and each crew member gets their own personal storage space.

And if you're a pilot? You've got it even sweeter. Two sleeping berths, business class seats, and a few airlines even put room for a closet, sink, and lavatory. Awesome!

These are the pilot beds on the 777.

There's also a strictly enforced "one person per bunk policy, you know, in case they get bored and frisky during the flight.

The bunks are equipped with lights, hooks, mirrors, come with pillows and blankets and even pajamas.

Some of them even feature entertainment systems . This sleeping area belongs to the 787 and is flat and open. The Boeing 773 is outfitted with these low-ceiling bunks.

The Malaysian Air A380 has these crappy-looking, cramped spaces.

But the luxe cabin on this same place is pretty badass.

I bet they're all sticky and smell like a frat house.

I didn't think I was claustrophobic until I had to lay in an MRI machine for 90 min. Now these images stress me out

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I WORK AT BOEING I KNOW HOW TO GET IN THERE!!! But im not telling muahahaha. I've been in the 777 one, its awesome.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Hidden is somewhat of a misnomer, if you are seated by the "closet" they disappear into, it is pretty obvious where they are going.

So that's where the creaky noises were coming from, I always felt like the plane was about to fall apart. Now I know.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I really wanna fuck someone up there

This was actually the idea of an New Zealand Psychiatrist who was brought in to investigate high levels of stress among flight crew.

Son of SAS pilot here, this is NOT the norm. I've seen the place that Dad sleeps at. It's not even big or wide enough to lie on your back...

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

This is only for big aircraft like 777, A380 etc

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

SAS's biggest plane is the A340 I believe

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He flies long distance on pretty big aircrafts, so you'd think they'd have these kind of places to sleep.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

what does he fly? 737-800 flies long distance too

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Scandinavian does not currently have anything bigger than the A330 and A340.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's what I said, no?

Work for Boeing. Can confirm these exist.

The fuck? Boeing 773?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah - what is that?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably a Boeing 777-300, which can be abbreviated that way

How do pilots utilise their bunks while they're piloting the plane?

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

On longer flights, there are 3-4 pilots that rotate through duties.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

(9/11 beginning to make more sense)

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

Extra pilots in shifts.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

computers drive planes. Pilots are just there so you think there's a person in control.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 7

In the future, planes will be flown by a man and a dog. The man's job is to feed the dog. The dog's job is to bite the man if he touches owt

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You clearly don't have a clue what goes on in there.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Does it only take 2 years to become a pilot??

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you need flight time as well I think, but probably 2 years to study commercial aviation or something.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can be fully commercially rated in 180 days with a few programs. But yeah, rest is getting the hours

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Integrated Airline Transport Piloting License-course I did took 22 months. Around 250 flight hours .

The airline orders the space to their needs. They aren't in the same place and aren't the same config for all airlines even on same model.

Found it (really stumbled upon it) with ease on a 747. Back of the plane, right side if I remember right. (1/3)

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Found stairs & I wanted to say I went up to the second floor of a 747 (I was in coach). (2/3)

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Once I saw the beds & how tiny it was, I remembered that the 747's hump is in front & realized what I stumbled upon. (3/3)

You can pay to win even here... maybe Boing and EA have some contracts

If I only I didn't have an irrational fear of flying...

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Only feels like your flying on takeoff, and landing. Giant planes like this don't feel Much (if any) turbulence. Statistically flying is 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

safer than driving anyways.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I'm going to look into that for something to do this next year..any tips on what to put on the resume?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wow, you must work for a low class airline then. Either that or you're bluffing.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I recently got interviewed for delta airlines to be a flight attendant. what can i expect from the job should i get it?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Since the number of women is greater than that of guys, do you tap all of your fellow anttendants? If not, how do you avoid suspicion?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

do all planes have these or just awesome ones?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just the big ones.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Neat. But why are there pilot bunks? Are they not flying the plane? Or are there extra pilots on some flights?

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Extra pilots, theyre just called relief pilots. Also, this happened once https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EgyptAir_Flight_990

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Something like that happened recently too but it wasn't the relief pilot

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are 4 pilots on long haul flights. One set for take off and landing and the other flies during cruise. Breaks are planned accordingly

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Overseas flights are mostly run on auto-pilot. Imagine cruise control for a plane. One pilot sleeps at a time, cockpit can't be unmanned.

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

All commercial flights are flown on autopilot. Long range flights might also have a third pilot onboard, who takes controls during cruise 1

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

for the captain or first officer to go get rest. The cockpit should always have one pilot flying and one pilot monitoring 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

How long are the pilot "shifts?"

Many states still follow a 55 MPH speed limit that was originally imposed by the National Maximum Speed Law in the 70s in response to

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

the oil crisis. Laziness mostly, the federal law hasn't existed since 1995.

See the Sammy Hagar song I Can't Drive 55 produced in response.
