Hey everybody!
Sorry for not posting a "how things are harvested" for a while but I'm back
Today I'll show you the process of pumpkin seed harvesting

At first all of the pumpkins have to be corralled into rows so that the next machine can follow up and pick them

This machine picks the pumpkins up a crushes them to separate the seeds from the flesh of the pumpkin.

Another view of the seed harvester

When the machine is full, seeds can easily be emptied with an auger before being washed and processed.

so are they growing pumpkins just so they can grow more pumpkins.

The only thing that's spooky about pumpkins is how disappointed I was when I finally tasted them.

Thanks, I've been waiting since 1979 for that comment. Was feeling rather Mellon Collie. Gish.

There is something deep inside me from my childhood that says, "Whoa! Cool!" to equipment and it being used.

I always enjoy watching those machines work. Forts time I've seen pumpkins. Mainly grain, cotton and corn around us.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We're corn, soybeans, wheat, and sugar beets

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's literally a plow that rolls the pumpkins slightly to the side

Sad that most of the pumpkin gets wasted, could still be used as food for animals etc

I hate the smell of raw pumpkin, its pretty gross. Pumpkin pie is ok because of nutmeg and cinnamon.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also because it's mostly not pumpkin.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Amazing

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fucking awesome. Thank you!

You're welcome!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What a waste of all that flesh.

9 years ago | Likes 212 Dislikes 10

Good for the soil!

9 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

Exactly! Increase that organic matter and add some nutrients back!

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Out of context that’s horrifying

9 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

It's not gonna taste all that great; they're bred for the seeds. Also, the farmer will let the cows eat it.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

The spirit is willing but the flesh is spongy and bruised.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

pumpkins are one of the crops used to "rejuvinate" a feild, its not a waste this was entirely the purpose of growing the pumpkins

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The pumpkins are "seed pumpkins" the flesh inside is not the same as your jack-o-lantern, artificial selection at its finest.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And imagine how many pies that could make.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

The best "pumpkin" pies are made with squash. Butternut Squash is my favorite. Real pumpkins don't have a lot of flavor.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

They use different varieties of pumkin for eating then what you get for jack o laterns

Truth be told, I add pumpkin to my tomato pasta sauce for sweetness. No one can ever tell, they just know it's a little sweeter than plain.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd never thought of that. I might have to try it once I get back to cooking.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is it canned pumpkin or do you get an actual one and do that up yourself?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I grow squash & pumpkins (along w/ beets, carrots, tomatoes, beans & snowpeas) in my little garden.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Heard of doing this with carrots

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Either or both are great for balancing tomato's acidity; I've also used beets. It depends on what I have too much of in my garden that year.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can also skip that altogether and eat the superior sweet potato pie

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Maybe we could just make pies with fruits in stead.

I shall meet you in the battlefield

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hate sweet potatoes.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They waste all of that flesh?!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's added back to the soil to increase organic matter and replenish nutrients

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah wasted, as in not eaten my man nor beast

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

Animals will *definitely* get there.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Animals, bugs, and microorganisms do though!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is not waste. If you don't do this, there will be pumpkins next year, unless you dump a lot of fertilizer.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There really is a tool for everything... a ridiculously specific tool for every need.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One of the selling points for Capitalism in my opinion. For all it's flaws, the pursuit of wealth encourages people to be quite ingenious.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or to patent troll to oblivion.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One of the flaws.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So we grow pumpkins to get pumpkin seeds, so we can grow more pumpkins to get even more pumpkin seeds? This is an exercise in futility.

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

You eat the seeds.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Fuckin’ vegans! If you let seeds grow, they can turn into food, you impatient freak. I’m just fuckin’ with ya, I bake salted pumpkin seeds.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The pumpkins don't make just one seed...

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

But they are destroying every pumpkin to get the seeds... to make more pumpkins... to get more seeds.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

1 seed makes a pumpkin that makes like 50+ seeds.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That makes 50 more pumpkins which gives them 2,500 seeds which gives them 2,500 pumpkins, which gives them 125,000 seeds. Where does it end?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

With pumpkins taking over the World, muhahaha!!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

so they just waste all the squash flesh and take just the seeds? thats fucking retarded

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

Maybe it's used as fertilizer?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fertilizer. Also, livestock will probably come and graze. Pumpkin flesh itself isn't all that valuable.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

b-b-b-b-but muh pumpkin pie!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Different variety of pumpkin. Also pumpkin pie mix is mostly not pumpkin.Pumpkin doesn't taste very good.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yeah it does. its delicious. i keep plain canned pumpkin as a home remedy for my dogs and it tastes great

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Canned pumpkin is not exactly pumpkin.
