Oh my lord the headphone jack has gone the way of removable batteries.

I listen to music constantly. I bought an iPhone 7, and I thought it may suck. Let me just say. It makes no difference what so ever.

No headphone jack because the new generation of buyers are assholes who dont use headphones anyways. I know because I know one.

Yeah, there's nothing like sitting at home and hearing someone's music as they walk past with the phone in their hand... Thankfully it's 1/2
normally shitty music anyway, so it's not being any more murdered by the internal speakers ;) 2/2

Apple sets market trends, people. They did the same thing with Ethernet ports and disk drives. They’re doing it with usb-c as well.
Zerreth
Firewire and Thunderbolt are doing SOOOO well
Thunderbolt is. Firewire was replaced by thunderbolt. Any recent real desktop or laptop workstation has a thunderbolt port.

don't worry their is a solution to this, don't fucking buy it
Too late, it's already a foregone conclusion. Half the flagships this year dropped it, and the rest will soon follow suit.

pretty much all my headphones are rechargeable bluetooth. My life is active, my city is crowded. Id prefer not snagging wires in the gym or
You're not the onoy person that buys cell phones or listens to music with headphones
on commuters. It doesn't take that much effort to plus your headphones in at night.
And don't forget, there was NOTHING stopping you from using Bluetooth before. You just lost the choice, as a consumer. For nothing in return
Bluetooth drains battery faster, can be hacked, the headphones are dramatically more expensive, & now I have to charge. How's that better?
a)6-8 hours of active use is plenty b)why are you keeping sensitive data on an insecure device c)quality costs, wired or unwired
inaplasticcup
a) that's not enough for my work b) work c) BT costs more
A. It is when you don't need your phone to live the rest of the day for work. B. Because how else can I make a call C. Not as much
d) you charge your phone, laptop, and other gadgets. be responsible for your own stuff. e) i mentioned the benefits for me
D. is just a restatement of A, and E. You're admitting you don't care about them making extra profit off of you. Typical ignorant consumer?

It also works for all other trips. My phone has no jack, but the USB-C charging port has a USB-C to headphone adapter. Use one of those.

This actually happened to a guy we passed in the middle of no where between Nevada and Oregon. Back roads. Hours without service 1/2
He was going 10 mph. It would take him 10 hours to get to the next gas station. We went ahead, called 911 from gas station cause no cell
We saw a police car go by us opposite 45 min later. So hopefully he got help before 10 hours of stranded.
Theoreticalheretic
As i understand it, that has a lot to do with upping the mpg without actually making the cars that much more efficient.

We saw this shit coming they have been copying apple for a while now this is the final conclusion. If this is true samsung is done for 1/2
Why would we buy a knock off iphone for the same price the extendable memory and headphone jack was their major selling point now its gone

I'm sure this reasoning is total BS. They're making their phones similar since they both dominate the industry. That's gotta be the reason.
Or at least have a better reason than making my damn wired headphones obsolete. Don't wanna need to buy a 200 dollar wireless headphones.
RobKnob91
Amazon has a pair of Bluetooth headphones that kick ass for $20. Optimum Beats
DegenerateCrotchFruit
There's an adapter you can but that will make wired headphones Bluetooth capable
guntbagmunkball
I need this.
If apple or samsung sell it then I'm not buying that crap. They're turning full products into an unfinished product with DLCs. F that.

That's the reason right there. People will need to spend more money purchasing bluetooth accessories. Such as headphones and adapters.

There's more than 1 phone out now with the same water resistant rating as the jack-less iPhone, including the s8. You sure about that?
Epyos
This
It requires less change internally to achieve he rating. Makes for cheap innovation. Plus they can sell you the little headphone adapter bit
Not the adapter. Licensing. Because the lighting port is proprietary, apple makes $$$ on headphones from 3rd parties that use that port.

I was misinformed, the headphone jack left because it was necessary to ditch the floppy drive, which was bound to happen sooner or later.
Different55
CD replaced USB and Lightning replaced the 30-pin because they were better. Bluetooth offers nothing of value besides being wireless.
That's pretty tenuous.. floppy went out because something roughly 700x better became mainstream, the aux jack hasn't been replaced 1/
by something transformative, or by something wholly easier to use. I'll be fine with it once BT streaming offers an incentive, 1/

First they get rid of the easy to open backing, making it harder to repair, now this?

They aren’t too bad to repair
mybrothersmario
Still harder than just opening the back.

I preferred phones with removable backing anyways. Can write notes in there or replace the battery yourself without voiding warranties.
Or even run those much larger batteries that replace the old phone backing.

A lot of this is 1: good headphones are not entirely cheap so being told I cannot use them hurts. 2: Bluetooth headphones can be quite 1/2
expensive so yay more costs associated with a new phone and 3: Apple debuted this particular wave with their total BS airpods so that 2/3

aCatfishNamedKitty
They do this to move forward in tech. People bitched about changing to USB-C too, even though it's leaps and bounds better
The main bitching is about that its not standardized. Every company decided to do something slightly different with the port making some
cables function and some not.
poochyena
explain how this moves forward tech
Neophillia.
Exactly how is a more expensive, battery-required device, that can be hacked, better than a jack that has been universal for 50 years?
Wut
Bluetooth uses more battery, requires more expensive headphones, and creates another avenue for hackers to access your phone wirelessly.
Why use bluetooth? They should use usb-c headphones. And your argument folds in on itself with the invention of the cellphone itself
That means dongles which also means $, plus MORE dongles if you want to charge. Also more expensive headphones if you want USB-C benefits.
Forcing people to use USB-C provides literally no benefit over having both as options.
DanielBoringcliff
Luckily i switched to Bluetooth headphones a long time ago
Luckily I just gave up on convenience a long time ago. Seriously, the last thing I want is more expensive headphones, that I have to charge.
TheCorporateMudkip
I find this one hard to believe because they keep buying companies that make headphones like akg with the s8 they bundled akg buds with it
CreamNinja
Achtually.png, they bought Harman, who makes akg, harman kardon, infinity, jbl and then some.
Which are absolutely amazing when compared to my other pair of earpod thingies.
DadSavage
Maybe AKG has wireless headphones.
They sell you the problem, then release the solution: wireless headphones, at a dramatically higher markup to their standard headphones.
deadlyvenom354
Complain all you want give it less then 5 years and all phones won’t have a head phone jack, and I’m okay with that
Pangs
I'm OK with it right now.
The real question is WHY are you okay with losing choice, as a consumer? Especially when you gain literally nothing in return.
Why do you need a head phone jack on your phone? And do you really need to charge your phone and use headphones?
Use it in the car for trips all the time, so yes. Or hook it up to speakers at my friend's place. Plus, they're WAY cheaper headphones.
AnusReadyToBeRavaged
As long as its standardised across all phones (Looking at you apple) it should be ok after a few years

More Waterproof instead of just water resistant
pilojo
Wrong. There are completely waterproof phones that have headphone jacks.
Indeed, as you see the jack only needs to be able to receive data. Its not a hole into the phone (the walls are sealed, copper can easily
be used like that) the main issue with water is that when it dries guess what! the board warps and all those small chips? fried.
PorneliusHubart
I thought it was for waterproofing that didn't require the hydrophobic coating
Caburnacus
They can made the phone thinner. The phone can only be so thin w a jack, and god forbid they dont have some dumb new gimmick
Zyrin
Honestly wish they would stop making them so thin. Could probably fit a bigger battery in there.
Shpadoinkleman
Is this a real concern? Is anyone REALLY bitching about how "OH SWEET FUCKING JESUS I HAVE TO CARRY A PHONEBOOK AROUND IN MY POCKET HELP!" ?
Most people I know who go "I want a thinner phone" turn into "Why do I keep having to charge it so often?" people pretty quickly.
I do know they were complaining when a cheaper chassis made phones easier to bend...to the point that tight pants could bend them.
BlankMage
My understanding was that there are a large number of companies, including them, with a vested interest in getting you to buy their headsets

Reduces battery consumption and removes a rather large component of the phone that turns digital to analog and regulates voltage. More room
natabus
Also, combined with cordless charging, we could eventually have a device with no gaps or holes in the case skin.
zFUBARz
1) I mean, in terms of what uses power, I can leave my phone on random for like 10+ hours while listening and barely use any power. Not
2) to say you're wrong but compared to the digitizers screen and wifi, a DAC seems like small potatoes
Blatant bull. The jack does not consume nearly as much power as bluetooth, and the DAC is still required for the onboard speakers.
FistfulOfAssholes
This is the first reasonable goddamn explanation I’ve seen. Is it bullshit? The internet has ruined me.
It's BS. USB and Bluetooth would draw as much, if not more power than headphone jack would when used. And the amps are SUPER small nowadays.
It is. The jack does not consume nearly as much power as bluetooth, and the DAC is still required for the onboard speakers.
BrokeMyFunnyBone
Essentially it means that they can make the phone thinner even though nobody gives a shit or even notices it anymore cause we all have cases
CKOD
18+ hours playing continuously on a AAA battery... Power draw of the DAC isnt the issue here.
PirateRabbitSim
I have one of those!
http://www.ti.com/product/tlv320aic3253 < 3x3mm chip, space isnt the issue here either.
Shaving $2-3 off the build cost when you're making 10 million plus units though...
Eh its not exactly useless. Wireless data transfer is still lossy (extremely lossy) where as cables can transfer basic information for long
distances with very minimal losses. There are a few reasons why bluetooth is short range.
Bluetooth is capable of production quality sound at intended ranges, though.
I hope I'm not speaking out of my ass or my $12k college education on computer engineering is wasted.
777Permission
Where the fuck did you get through college with only 12k? Ps: I like your explanation on this matter btw.
Canada, we have some cheap colleges and some stupidly expensive universities.
It does not reduce battery consumption. Bluetooth or USB headphones are gonna draw power too.
"No no no but see removing things = more battery, simple math my fancy canadian college degree says so" -pillojo, for this entire thread
The punchline is the iPhone 7 actually had a smaller battery despite removing the jack.
Tilted9000
Does blue tooth reduce battery consumption?
Sure if the original phone that removed the jack also allowed the actual chip to turn off buut, the IphoneX doesnt
DrSparken
bluetooth and wifi are on the same chip, so at the very least you'd need to turn both off to get an improvement beyond just reduced activity
Basically they said "We expect users to be dumb"
I'd post sources but all the damn links are longer than 144 characters and imgur always gets mad at me for shortening links so.
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ios+11+bluetooth+forever+on+on">http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ios+11+bluetooth+forever+ona> and http://lmgtfy.com/?q=iphone+x+bluetooth+on+all+the+time
CometLaHal
bluetooth is absolute shit for security. transitioning to always having bluetooth on for headphones will open the door and set the mat 1/
for hackers 2/2
Sure. Keep dreaming. There are far easier cracks to use than bluetooth. NFC, wifi now with the 'KRACK' exploit, and man in the middle attack
Yes. DAC units and voltage regulators are ridiculously intensive. Bluetooth is somewhat more efficient.
Quit talking out of your butt. Bluetooth uses vastly more energy than any headphone jack.
...If you take out the DAC, I take it you'd take out the internal speaker as well, as I don't see how you'd drive it digitally?
I don't buy that. Bluetooth (not LE) is actually a decent drain on battery when transmitting.
Oh, yes. But the point is that DAC has more drain. There's no perfect solution, just a slightly more efficient one
CycloneSP
then explain why my battery doesn't last nearly as long with BT active?
My phone lasts about 22 hours with Bluetooth on but maximum 18 hours with Bluetooth off and sound constantly playing through the jack.
10meterpole
Whats the sound quality. Never tried BT headphones
Bluetooth hisses and whines annoyingly when it's not perfectly silent. Most notably for the little clicks and taps when using your phone.
adobesubmarine
If you want to spend a bunch of cash, the quality is great... until it isn't. Bluetooth simply isn't as reliable as a wired connection.
I'm a somewhat audiophile, and find my sony mdr1000x plenty fine for long travels and it's intended use. Best I've had for mobile use anyway
Lossless (perfect) audio is possible on BT now. It's up to what's in the headphones. But they cost dramatically more for same quality sound.
It's good. People have misconceptions about BT because it was shit in the past. Don't cheap out and you get great sound. BT is capable of
snipekill1997
So moving the batteries for those intensive systems so that they hang from your ears is better?
For concerns about battery combustion, nah. For total battery life, yes, I'd say.
For components that actually matter in a wireless age. Could possibly fit bigger batteries. Headphone jacks take up A LOT of space.
Has any phone that took the headphone jack out actually use that space for a bigger battery?
Nope, they would rather make the phone thinner, with even less battery life.
Certainly not the iPhone that started the trend. They used all the space from the jack to make their "Taptic Engine" bigger.
Diyamin
They are trying to push the "wireless age" where you can do things like charge your phone by throwing it on your bed, and walk into the (1)

the new pixel doesn't have headphone jack either.
Yeah but I have enjoyed the one WITH a headphone jack, which is still for sale.

That's the great thing about Android, totally open source so there's a wide variety of stuff powered on it, even a mediocre game console.

Sony emphasizes on their headphone jack with high fidelity output. They all about it. just sayin. #therearedozensofus #DOZENS
Would be nifty at home, I'm really hard on headphones so those are too cheap to properly benefit from such a thing lol
hard in what way? rough housing? because I did actually break my headphone jack on my sony, but I think it was a messed up jack tbh
I just use them all day every day. I've tried cheap ones and nice ones from many brands but they all have one dead bud pretty quick. Now
I just buy whatever is 10 bucks or less and replace them as needed. I'd go bluetooth but I kept breaking those, too and connection is a pain
Lionskull
thing is, if you just ducttape the 3.5mm to usb c dongle to your headphone jack then it would be like a slightly longer headphone jack
Why would I want to buy an extra dongle that eats up my charge port?
because so far, apple, samsung, and google have taken out the headphone jack.
That's why I might HAVE to, want is kind of a different issue and I'll switch to off brands or old models for as long as I can hold out.
right, but at some point in time, you gotta start thinking solutions to the problem instead of ignoring it.
CochiseVeneficorum
HTC is best, imo
fandsor
To what? They're all going headphone jack-less.
Sony bro.
Not quite yet. ZTE, Moto, that H one I can't spell, etc Plus refurbed older models. It's a losing battle but I'll hold out as long as I can
Same. I have a perfectly good set of wired headphones. They don't need to be replaced.
TheFrenchCanadianTaunter
Does that mean that people just can't listen to music on their phone? Why would they take that out?
It means bluetooth or a proprietary adapter only. More sales of expensive add-ons.

Motorola dropped the jack briefly, then brought it back. Droid phones are pretty nice.
plenty if android and windows manufacturers out there
reallynotmikepence
Windows dropped their phone. There's still a ton of Android out there and google is looking pretty good.
Contundo
Like HTC? They dropped it on their flagship so you are down to Sony or one Plus, or what's it called and Huawei
Oops. honestly I don't follow phones at all. I grab the latest galaxy active every couple years.

Moto, dare I say Windows phones?
Did they ever get Snapchat?
Negative. Would be typing this from a Windows phone if they did. Snapchat had said they have no plans to ever release on Windows

Check out Oneplus or ZTE. Good phones, for pretty cheap.

nexus 6p is the best phone i've ever had. made by huawei.
Cool. I've got their flagship model and it's better than the last 4 Samsungs I had
Yeah but what was the price point on it?
I had a Galaxy and in January, I had just a few bucks but it was enough for a Honor 7. It's an older model but hardware-wise, it can (1/?)
compete with modern phones. It's an alternative to expensive brands. Huawei doesn't have that many selling counts for nothing :3 (2/2)
I had an honor 5, it was all good
ProxyPlayerHD
or just keep your older phone? as long as it worky why the fuck get a new one?
Why do multiple people think I'm running out and grabbing one tomorrow? I use them until they don't work, usually about 1.5-2 years.
your phone only lasts 2 years... what... how
Idk man, that's just how long it takes for something to go bad enough it's more expensive to fix than replace or for me to break it.
i have my phone since around 2 years and it looks new. nothing broke, and i don't even have a case for it... How do you break it in 2 years

I have the v20 too! But i agree,v the glass backs and whatnot are a pain
Agree. I like different as in removable glass back maybe. That would be diffrent. But apple sets the norm for smartphones and I hate that
heroinesick
Same. Gotta love those removable, replaceable batteries.
I love my G6, it is everything I want in a phone.
had an LG3, i got rid of it because there was some voice control app that came up constantly and couldn't be uninstalled from the LG distro.
There is a lot of bloatware, but you can disable what you can't uninstall. I've liked the g4, g5, g6, v10, and v20. Also the lg mach.
I disabled a LOT of apps but it wasn't an option there. presumably it supported other system functions like voice to text and was protected.
treosfnb
Are you sure the bloatware wasn't from your carrier? My last 3 lg phones had a whopping 3 non android apps that did nothing.
Could have been, but I've only ever had the one carrier and only the LG had the annoying app.
It's mostly google's apps, but there were a bunch from the carrier too.
ChuckWeiss
Why do people continuously buy the newest phones? My phone is over 5 years old now, and t ati wkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
McGreed
I had mine for 4 years and then 3 months ago I dropped it and it finally crack the screen. I paid to fix it, it deserved it. Loyal phone.
Joking aside, my iPhone 5c (it was free, or I'd have got a different phone) has lasted 5 years with no incident. If it breaks, I'd rather 1/
Pay to repair it than get a new phone. Reducing the amount of ewaste I produce is a part of that. 2/2
Mine die every 1.5-2 years. I buy a new phone when the old one doesn't work, just saying when that happens I won't buy w/out a 3.5mm jack.
Well then you’re in trouble soon
Yup. Shit happens, but I'll hold out as long as I can. I hate dealing with bluetooth headphones.

This actually happened to a guy we passed in the middle of no where between Nevada and Oregon. Back roads. Hours without service 1/2

rusrsdude
I'm sure this reasoning is total BS. They're making their phones similar since they both dominate the industry. That's gotta be the reason.
rusrsdude
Or at least have a better reason than making my damn wired headphones obsolete. Don't wanna need to buy a 200 dollar wireless headphones.

If apple or samsung sell it then I'm not buying that crap. They're turning full products into an unfinished product with DLCs. F that.

Ampwork
It requires less change internally to achieve he rating. Makes for cheap innovation. Plus they can sell you the little headphone adapter bit

I was misinformed, the headphone jack left because it was necessary to ditch the floppy drive, which was bound to happen sooner or later.
Different55
CD replaced USB and Lightning replaced the 30-pin because they were better. Bluetooth offers nothing of value besides being wireless.
Anonaru
That's pretty tenuous.. floppy went out because something roughly 700x better became mainstream, the aux jack hasn't been replaced 1/
Anonaru

aCatfishNamedKitty
They do this to move forward in tech. People bitched about changing to USB-C too, even though it's leaps and bounds better
Ulthirm
The main bitching is about that its not standardized. Every company decided to do something slightly different with the port making some
Ulthirm
cables function and some not.
poochyena
explain how this moves forward tech
Cheomesh
Neophillia.
serenityfast
Exactly how is a more expensive, battery-required device, that can be hacked, better than a jack that has been universal for 50 years?
aCatfishNamedKitty
Wut
serenityfast
Bluetooth uses more battery, requires more expensive headphones, and creates another avenue for hackers to access your phone wirelessly.
aCatfishNamedKitty
Why use bluetooth? They should use usb-c headphones. And your argument folds in on itself with the invention of the cellphone itself
serenityfast
That means dongles which also means $, plus MORE dongles if you want to charge. Also more expensive headphones if you want USB-C benefits.
serenityfast
Forcing people to use USB-C provides literally no benefit over having both as options.
DanielBoringcliff
Luckily i switched to Bluetooth headphones a long time ago
serenityfast
Luckily I just gave up on convenience a long time ago. Seriously, the last thing I want is more expensive headphones, that I have to charge.
TheCorporateMudkip
I find this one hard to believe because they keep buying companies that make headphones like akg with the s8 they bundled akg buds with it
CreamNinja
Achtually.png, they bought Harman, who makes akg, harman kardon, infinity, jbl and then some.
Ulthirm
Which are absolutely amazing when compared to my other pair of earpod thingies.
DadSavage
Maybe AKG has wireless headphones.
serenityfast
They sell you the problem, then release the solution: wireless headphones, at a dramatically higher markup to their standard headphones.
deadlyvenom354
Complain all you want give it less then 5 years and all phones won’t have a head phone jack, and I’m okay with that
Pangs

The real question is WHY are you okay with losing choice, as a consumer? Especially when you gain literally nothing in return.
deadlyvenom354
Why do you need a head phone jack on your phone? And do you really need to charge your phone and use headphones?
serenityfast
Use it in the car for trips all the time, so yes. Or hook it up to speakers at my friend's place. Plus, they're WAY cheaper headphones.
AnusReadyToBeRavaged

Audio DACs built into phones are terrible. Getting one to plug into the USB port will give you better audio.

BLUTOOTH IS THE FUTURE!

But wireless when it's not necessary to use is whiggedy whack, dawg.
ASUSunDvl
More Waterproof instead of just water resistant
pilojo
Wrong. There are completely waterproof phones that have headphone jacks.
Ulthirm
Indeed, as you see the jack only needs to be able to receive data. Its not a hole into the phone (the walls are sealed, copper can easily
Ulthirm
be used like that) the main issue with water is that when it dries guess what! the board warps and all those small chips?
ChloeRed
Most people I know who go "I want a thinner phone" turn into "Why do I keep having to charge it so often?" people pretty quickly.
Ssssssssssss
I do know they were complaining when a cheaper chassis made phones easier to bend...to the point that tight pants could bend them.
BlankMage
My understanding was that there are a large number of companies, including them, with a vested interest in getting you to buy their headsets

TBH This sounds to be more like an apple thing now they they have Beats, Wouldn't be surprised if Beats+Iphone= superior sound comes up soon

And I will still shell out the same amount of money for a Bose set because they aren't overpriced trash.
wilkins1952
I use a set of Phillips SHS8001 really nice to wear cheap and have top tier sound quality
TiGRIOSindustriesRnD
Right? I had a pair of Triton Kunai that were AMAZING... until I sat on them one day.
pilojo
Reduces battery consumption and removes a rather large component of the phone that turns digital to analog and regulates voltage. More room
natabus
Also, combined with cordless charging, we could eventually have a device with no gaps or holes in the case skin.
zFUBARz
1) I mean, in terms of what uses power, I can leave my phone on random for like 10+ hours while listening and barely use any power. Not
zFUBARz
2) to say you're wrong but compared to the digitizers screen and wifi, a DAC seems like small potatoes
Different55
Blatant bull. The jack does not consume nearly as much power as bluetooth, and the DAC is still required for the onboard speakers.
FistfulOfAssholes
This is the first reasonable goddamn explanation I’ve seen. Is it bullshit? The internet has ruined me.
serenityfast
It's BS. USB and Bluetooth would draw as much, if not more power than headphone jack would when used. And the amps are SUPER small nowadays.
Different55
It is. The jack does not consume nearly as much power as bluetooth, and the DAC is still required for the onboard speakers.
BrokeMyFunnyBone
Essentially it means that they can make the phone thinner even though nobody gives a shit or even notices it anymore cause we all have cases
CKOD
PirateRabbitSim
I have one of those!
CKOD
http://www.ti.com/product/tlv320aic3253 < 3x3mm chip, space isnt the issue here either.
CKOD
Shaving $2-3 off the build cost when you're making 10 million plus units though...
Ulthirm
Eh its not exactly useless. Wireless data transfer is still lossy (extremely lossy) where as cables can transfer basic information for long
Ulthirm
distances with very minimal losses. There are a few reasons why bluetooth is short range.
pilojo
Bluetooth is capable of production quality sound at intended ranges, though.
pilojo
I hope I'm not speaking out of my ass or my $12k college education on computer engineering is wasted.
777Permission
Where the fuck did you get through college with only 12k? Ps: I like your explanation on this matter btw.
pilojo
Canada, we have some cheap colleges and some stupidly expensive universities.
serenityfast
It does not reduce battery consumption. Bluetooth or USB headphones are gonna draw power too.
Different55
"No no no but see removing things = more battery, simple math my fancy canadian college degree says so" -pillojo, for this entire thread
serenityfast
The punchline is the iPhone 7 actually had a smaller battery despite removing the jack.
Tilted9000
Does blue tooth reduce battery consumption?
Ulthirm
Sure if the original phone that removed the jack also allowed the actual chip to turn off buut, the IphoneX doesnt
DrSparken
bluetooth and wifi are on the same chip, so at the very least you'd need to turn both off to get an improvement beyond just reduced activity
Ulthirm
Basically they said "We expect users to be dumb"
Ulthirm
I'd post sources but all the damn links are longer than 144 characters and imgur always gets mad at me for shortening links so.

CometLaHal
bluetooth is absolute shit for security. transitioning to always having bluetooth on for headphones will open the door and set the mat 1/
CometLaHal
for hackers 2/2
pilojo
Sure. Keep dreaming. There are far easier cracks to use than bluetooth. NFC, wifi now with the 'KRACK' exploit, and man in the middle attack
pilojo
Yes. DAC units and voltage regulators are ridiculously intensive. Bluetooth is somewhat more efficient.
Different55
Quit talking out of your butt. Bluetooth uses vastly more energy than any headphone jack.
ChloeRed
...If you take out the DAC, I take it you'd take out the internal speaker as well, as I don't see how you'd drive it digitally?
serenityfast
I don't buy that. Bluetooth (not LE) is actually a decent drain on battery when transmitting.
pilojo
Oh, yes. But the point is that DAC has more drain. There's no perfect solution, just a slightly more efficient one
CycloneSP
then explain why my battery doesn't last nearly as long with BT active?
pilojo
My phone lasts about 22 hours with Bluetooth on but maximum 18 hours with Bluetooth off and sound constantly playing through the jack.
10meterpole
Whats the sound quality. Never tried BT headphones
Different55
Bluetooth hisses and whines annoyingly when it's not perfectly silent. Most notably for the little clicks and taps when using your phone.
adobesubmarine
If you want to spend a bunch of cash, the quality is great... until it isn't. Bluetooth simply isn't as reliable as a wired connection.
CreamNinja
I'm a somewhat audiophile, and find my sony mdr1000x plenty fine for long travels and it's intended use. Best I've had for mobile use anyway
serenityfast
Lossless (perfect) audio is possible on BT now. It's up to what's in the headphones. But they cost dramatically more for same quality sound.
pilojo
It's good. People have misconceptions about BT because it was shit in the past. Don't cheap out and you get great sound. BT is capable of
snipekill1997
So moving the batteries for those intensive systems so that they hang from your ears is better?
CreamNinja
For concerns about battery combustion, nah. For total battery life, yes, I'd say.
pilojo
For components that actually matter in a wireless age. Could possibly fit bigger batteries. Headphone jacks take up A LOT of space.
poochyena
Has any phone that took the headphone jack out actually use that space for a bigger battery?
Caburnacus
Nope, they would rather make the phone thinner, with even less battery life.
Different55
Certainly not the iPhone that started the trend. They used all the space from the jack to make their "Taptic Engine" bigger.
Diyamin
They are trying to push the "wireless age" where you can do things like charge your phone by throwing it on your bed, and walk into the (1)
SleepyRhino

Diyamin

Gmayor61
So... Speakers?

LG. Not only does the V30 have a headphone jack it also has a quad dac making everything played though the jack sound better and louder.

Superchief86
This shit makes me so angry. But what makes me angrier is people who defend it. "People don't use wired headphones anymore." Bullshit! 1/2
Superchief86
2/2 Then why do they give you an adaptor? Most people still use wired. Some choose wireless. This is trying to take away the choice!
melwil
So, there's an adapter, what are you complaining about now?
SalvalecRhaplanca
Thank you! I don't wanna shell out the cash for a Bluetooth headset that costs 3x as much for worse sound quality than my $15 wired 'phones.
spitsfire
You can choose not to buy it
Superchief86
So far I have. What worries me though is that eventually all the companies will follow suit, then there won't be any choice at all.
goneinaflash911
That is how progression works. People kick up a fuss about any change
AnalBaguette
Wired is still the #1 option for audio, and they're artificially forcing it out. Blame Apple for this mainly.
littlegingerone
Yeah but there are more than two brands
Ulthirm
oneplus is pretty decent despite basically copying apple.
BigJewishHulk
They aren't copying. My phone doesn't look like an iphone at all
mybrothersmario

Eh mainly exterior phone design.

Oh yeah, I forgot that was the design they went with for the 5..

Well sometimes you pay $100 and it's total shit, but there are some really good ones.

Sony emphasizes on their headphone jack with high fidelity output. They all about it. just sayin. #therearedozensofus #DOZENS
exlurker42
Would be nifty at home, I'm really hard on headphones so those are too cheap to properly benefit from such a thing lol
PockyBonneville
hard in what way? rough housing? because I did actually break my headphone jack on my sony, but I think it was a messed up jack tbh
exlurker42
I just use them all day every day. I've tried cheap ones and nice ones from many brands but they all have one dead bud pretty quick. Now
exlurker42
I just buy whatever is 10 bucks or less and replace them as needed. I'd go bluetooth but I kept breaking those, too and connection is a pain
Lionskull
thing is, if you just ducttape the 3.5mm to usb c dongle to your headphone jack then it would be like a slightly longer headphone jack
exlurker42
Why would I want to buy an extra dongle that eats up my charge port?
Lionskull
because so far, apple, samsung, and google have taken out the headphone jack.
exlurker42
That's why I might HAVE to, want is kind of a different issue and I'll switch to off brands or old models for as long as I can hold out.
Lionskull
right, but at some point in time, you gotta start thinking solutions to the problem instead of ignoring it.
CochiseVeneficorum
HTC is best, imo
fandsor
To what? They're all going headphone jack-less.
PockyBonneville
Sony bro.
exlurker42
Not quite yet. ZTE, Moto, that H one I can't spell, etc Plus refurbed older models. It's a losing battle but I'll hold out as long as I can

TheFrenchCanadianTaunter
Does that mean that people just can't listen to music on their phone? Why would they take that out?

vampyrita
There is a lot of bloatware, but you can disable what you can't uninstall. I've liked the g4, g5, g6, v10, and v20. Also the lg mach.
exlurker42
I disabled a LOT of apps but it wasn't an option there. presumably it supported other system functions like voice to text and was protected.
treosfnb
Are you sure the bloatware wasn't from your carrier? My last 3 lg phones had a whopping 3 non android apps that did nothing.
exlurker42
Could have been, but I've only ever had the one carrier and only the LG had the annoying app.
vampyrita
It's mostly google's apps, but there were a bunch from the carrier too.
