For anyone who gives a shit. Sweden dropped the rape enquiry into Assange years ago, however he has been arrested for a breach of bail conditions set by the UK courts back in 2010. From my reading, it appears the Ecuadorean embassy opened its doors and allowed the Met police in to arrest Assange this morning.
thechelonianshelmet
Gee I hope while he's in prison his cell-mate won't be guilty of rape
VigorousButtstuff
Get fucked, Russian. Sucks to be you. You weren't even a decent guest in the Ecuadorian embassy, and you were cruel to your cat.
McMeowenstein
I bet Hillary will pull the switch on the electric chair just to cook her meal before she feasts.
HenryLongfellowIII
Now comes the show trial. Darkness at Noon.
mfsr
Is this the guy that everyone loved until he exposed things they didnt love?
TrikStari
Basically. Democrats can be fickle and are super easy to mislead. Just call something racist and insinuate Russian involvement.
mfsr
I wont disagree. But I will add that Repubs can be the same way. They just use different trigger words.
TheFastpaws
I really do not care anymore.
Seethreepeeoh
Read that as Westminster Magistrates "court" . Thinking you're being a shady bitch
newsguycraigevans
Fuck that Russian operative.
TrikStari
Yeah, Hillary Clinton was the worst secretary of state Russia ever installed in our government.

Nevertheless if you agree with him or not. It shows that the world is heading back to the times before french revolution.

Guilty of illegally whistleblowing about the US Government doing illegal things illegally. Man is the definition of a patriot imo.

He is an Australian though.
TheTruthHurts51
Trump will pardon him. After all, the guy helped him get elected.
Attaroo
He does indeed love wikileaks, as does the GRU.
CygloPargen
Whatever your opinion of the man, the fact that the US can extradite journalists/whistleblowers is a scary precedent. Orwellian dystopia ftw
Stratego89
He has been arrested on charges seperate from his "journalism"- this isn't an attack on press freedom.
CygloPargen
If you believe that, you'll believe anything.
OofTM2
There have been a million journalists a million times more critical of a million more things than Assange and they haven't all been

cptwott
Assange made it possible to reveal much more than they ever wanted, so most of the hate is a campaign
CountVorkosigan
Assange has done a crap ton to attract hate all on his own. Acting as a Russian agent does that sort of thing these days.

LionHeart31337

AmazinglyCoolNameHere
It's rather comical to put Hillary in that group.
CeoHuntingSeason
nah, Bernie would have been comical
mardukkur
tRump loves him some Assange. The charges aren't some US government conspiracy. They're going after him for an actual crime he actually did.
CeoHuntingSeason
nope, read the charges, is for "trying" to help another person break some password, lamest shit ever.
mardukkur
"an actual crime he actually did" would be joining into a felony conspiracy to hack and steal data from pentagon computers.
CeoHuntingSeason
Somerandomoldguy
About time.
fowlersleftfoot
Yep
Mokelzwerg
Why?
KartFnocker
I mean, even ignoring all the political and personal issues, hiding in an embassy is not a solution for the rest of his life
seveneljeven
Because he was a coconspirator to hacking, a felony in the US. Therefore, he needs to face charges by a jury of his peers. US law
Somerandomoldguy
He isn't an american I could give a fuck less if he ever faces trial here.
seveneljeven
You don’t have to be a us citizen to break US law. I care about criminals facing our justice system. No one is above the law
Somerandomoldguy
Plenty of people are beyond US law. All it takes is not being an american and/or living in a country that doesn't want to turn them over.
Somerandomoldguy
Because using alex jones style paranoia to avoid facing an allegation of rape is pathetic. He has used his influence to hide long enough.

The funniest thing? He’s locked himself away for 7 years in the embassy and justice department has only given him 5 years lol.
CeoHuntingSeason
people is so naive, 5 years, he will be tortured by the US to point it would make Ramsey (from GOT) look like a good guy.
Hatarang
Or Ramsey from Hell's Kitchen
Magezz
"five years"
BleeDinglies
The 5 years is just so that the extradition will go through, once he's in the US they'll charge him with espionage and tack on more years
PeterNormal
He will 100% be murdered
grklein
He's working for Russia, not against it, so it's unlikely.
Rexli78
Depends on whether or not the Russians decide he’s an asset or a liability.
Nemrodh
naw the US will lock him up for 10 to 15 yrs. try to make themselves as the good guy and hope people forget about him

I’m shocked, SHOCKED that you’re spreading debunked conspiracy theories. That’s all you people have left.
Shendorion
I don't know about you, but I'd rather spend ten years in an embassy building than five in an American prison.
JimmySmits
A comfortable prison is still a prison. Give me five years of hardship followed by freedom over ten years of captivity.
rexkraft
A prision engineered to turn you insane so that the owners can make more profit out of you when you inevitably go back is not nice tho
Shendorion
The US prison system is designed to get you in and keep you there. It's extremely unlikely he'd only have served five years
Shendorion
(unless he only survived that long).
JimmySmits
I was just referring to your comment about five years in an embassy vs 10 in prison. Also the system is more revolving door than get you in
ThatAttitude
I don't..... Think he would have got five years if they'd nabbed him back then. Also, Chelsea Manning was locked right back up.
JimmySmits
I wasn't referring so much to this case in particular as just the choice of 10 yrs locked in can embassy vs 5 yrs in prison, as suggested.
ThatAttitude
Fair 'nuff.
hughesybooze
They were originally going for 25 years I believe.

As much as snowflakes want to cry about it, sometimes governments actually need to classify information for security purposes
ImgurPlz

Yes. That's why I expect the EU is going to chew on him for a few years before they offer him to the DOJ.

TheSpeakerOfTheHouse

wadatahmydamie
It wasn’t Clinton calling Nazis “very fine people” or recycling the Klan’s “America First” slogan.
wadatahmydamie

Anzacs
Hitler- center. Putin- center-left. Assange- opportunistic-left. Hackers- generally liberal. You're right, very interesting indeed.
wadatahmydamie
If you consider Hitler to be centrist, that explains a lot about your world view. By any objective measure, he was a far-right fascist.
Anzacs
But fascism isn't far-right, and arguing that any big government, anti-free speech, totalitarian view is right wing is purposefully false
wadatahmydamie
Trump loves him some Nazis and other white nationalists, and they love him right back. He even adopted the Klan slogan “America First”

fowlersleftfoot
He released documents stolen by Russian agents and given to his organisation knowing he would leak. Little more than just “whistleblowing”
Abramshero
Doubt it, show evidence. Besides it's still corruption that he exposed. Your biased perspective can't see that. He should be hailed a hero.

He was seen as a martyr until he got egg on Clinton's face, that's when they turned on him.

CatsIsTheAnswer
Maybe Assange received early notice some days ago and published the news as an advanced reaction
AmateurCaulkRingEnthusiast
He recieved notice a week ago

Theory time, they could have gone in a arrested him anytime they wanted to but were holding off and seeing if he exposed any new information
MedicinalMuffin
Ha, guess people don't like theories
MedicinalMuffin
Now, that he found he was being spied on there was no point and they kicked the bastards door down.
Grudgebearingmidget
Good luck with that, Embassies are considered foreign soil, uninvited entry into an embassy is essentially invading foreign soil.
Galdrack
The rape enquiry was dropped because of the statute of limitations. Basically he hid away till it timed out.

GodzillaHarddiskson
No it wasn't. A few minor charges were dropped, but rape has a limitation of ten years. The preliminary investigation was however halted
GodzillaHarddiskson
But was requested to be opened again after his arrest
Galdrack
Thanks for this. I've seen a lot of posts stating they were dropped as if it proved his innocence didn't know they were re-opened.
GodzillaHarddiskson
It's not re-opened yet, a request has just been made by the alleged victims lawyer. What happens next is anyones guess!
Galdrack
Here's hoping I guess. Though I feel it's more likely he'll be extradited to other countries for different crimes.
jayphat
When Ecuador asked you to stop being a dick, and you continue to be a dick, they'll eventually get tired of hiding you.
newsguycraigevans
Plus, he didn't clean up after his cat.
kikio321
Yeah sure, no interference or any presure from any country.
JumpingSandmann
Eh its not like they didnt want him out for a long time anyways. Doesn't feel like they needed much extrinsic motivation.
CeoHuntingSeason
"Damn this fellow is smelly! Kick him out! totally nothing to do with any pressure from the country with biggest army in the world"
OsmiumHawk
I mean spending 6 million to house one person kind of wears on people after a while. Wish I could just touch 6 million
kohrah
Wait, how was he a dick or continued being a dick?
prettypolitepangolin
He was asked to clean his bathroom and some other things. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-45875134

"We didn't kick him out for political reasons. We kicked him out because he's... as you Brits would say, a minger."
Fibularius
What is a minger?
res20stupid
An unattractive or unpleasant person or thing. It's a catch-all insult in the UK.

Ecuador’s in a tight spot economically and politically. In June 2018 the new president, Lenin Moreno (who is facing a corruption probe in 1

part due to documents that may have been leaked through Wikileaks), was visited by Mike Pence. Ecuador is going through a pretty tough time2
NinjaCongo
economically and politically and the Trump administration is showing signs of support. Since 2018 Assange has been withheld internet 3
NinjaCongo
access by the embassy and claims that he’s being constantly monitored, that his status changed from refugee to house arrest. To see this 4
NinjaCongo
as anything but a political move is disingenious. Assange is a whistle blower who stood up for democracy and was made a political refugee. 5
Adunadain
Exactly! It was like asking to stay at a friends place, who say “OK, but you got be quiet, baby’s sleeping.” But then he hosts a loud party!
lokitoki81
why would he host a party if his baby is sleeping? and how is that the friends fault? I dont get it
spetcnaz
I think WikiLeaks does super important work. Unfortunately it seems Assange is a bit of a dick
JumpingSandmann
Also they get played by russian intelligence rather hard noawadays.
