You only use the dots for motion capture, though. Most CGI animation is keyframed, which would be made with video reference.

Disney has a pretty solid rep for always trying to get their animators to see their subject. They had lion cubs brought in for Lion King,1/2

It's important to note that Rotoscoping was only used in the studies of subjects, not the making. It can be sort of a touchy subject.
