Hello fellow Imgurians

I have seen several D&D posts, and I wanted to share some other amazing pen and paper RPGs with you. I was a huge pathfinder nut a few years ago, simply because I didn't know there was anything else, so I wanted to help inform others of the wonders of other role playing games. These are my top 3 favorite so far, but far from the only ones I have enjoyed.

Edit - part II - http://imgur.com/gallery/9PFXX

Burning Wheel

Top of my list right now is The Burning Wheel. This is a Tolkien-esque fantasy role playing game, which focuses almost entirely on role playing and character interactions. While it is one of the heaviest games I've played rules-wise, it is also the one I've enjoyed most. Character creation, or "character burning" as they call it, builds the character's backstory into the character's skills and traits, and a character's beliefs are what drive the story. If you want to learn a new skill, you are going to have to use that skill in game. I can't do this game justice in a post, so here is a review that does pretty well:

Paranoia

Until I was introduced to this game, I had never thought of pen and paper RPGs as something that could be a comedy. Paranoia is an RPG where you play a citizen of Alpha Complex, which is the model of a perfect society. Everyone is happy, because happiness is mandatory. To make everything even more perfect, Alpha Complex is ruled over by the most amazing and perfect computer, and the Computer cares so much about you that the Computer wants to be your friend! Everyone say thank you to your friend, the Computer!
I have heard this game primarily described as 1984 meets the Marx Brothers, but I have found that a lot more people know what I'm talking about if I say "Imagine Glados from Protal rules over the world of Futurama." Yes, it is that ridiculous. Here is a brief into, citizen:

Savage Worlds

Savage Worlds makes this list because it is my favorite settingless system. Savage Worlds provides rules for making characters for, and playing them in, any setting you want. If you've ever seen a show or read a book and wanted to play a pen and paper RPG in that setting, Savage Worlds provides. Savage Worlds is also one of the simplest games I play. Simply roll a die and compare it to the number 4.
Another reason I like this game is there are a lot of different pre-written settings for players. This allows players to jump between different games, that all have their own flavor, and not have to get bogged down in learning new rules.
Here's a general review and introduction to playing:

One last thing to talk about

If you've made it this far, thank you for reading! I'm now going to do a shameless self-plug. If you aren't interested, feel free to move on.

While I did make this post to promote some of my favorite RPGs, I also want to promote one other pen and paper RPG: Hellbound. Hellbound isn't out yet, and that's because I am currently in the middle of writing it. It has a unique dice system, and I am working very hard to give it a fluid, cinematic combat system, that allows for more than FF style "I attack, now you attack, now I attack" combat.
Hellbound will have a dark, Sci-Fi Fantasy setting. Humanity has left earth, and now lives on giant starships known as freights. Each freight is privately owned, and all the people who live on the freight must bend to the wishes of the freight owner, else they are shot into the merciless vacuum of space.
If you are interested in reading more, here are the links to a short story I've written for the game, and a setting intro that is still a work in progress:

TL,DR: I made an RPG and wanted to share with Imgur.

I'm playing stars without number right now. I haven't played too many systems, but swn is the shit.

What about Cones of Dunshire??

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you guys need a slaptogether game, a DM I know does a game that I'm waiting on for the rules. He might see this post too, idk.

upvoting for Hellbound!! looking forward to it

Does anyone here know of CthulhuTech?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I haven't played it, but I am familiar with it. My favorite Lovecraft setting is Delta Green, aka the game that sued The X-Files and won.

Ooh.

I recommend Coriolis. You want to be a space pirate? A space archeologist? A space rock star? Anything is possible in the third horizon.

If you want an unrealistic game that 90% of the fun comes from character gen (which can be lethal to the character), check out deadEarth.

Ive also wanted to try Don't Rest Your Head, which is about people with extreme insomnia discovering magic.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

How does it compare to the original "character creation is a game that can end with your death" RPG, Traveller?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Kobolds ate my Baby!

Earth Dawn, ShadowRun, Vampire the Masquerade and other WoD games, Cyberpunk 2020. All great TT RPG's. Have own system for superhero RPG.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@Xenolith166 hey, does this quantify as interesting? Sorry, completely forgot to tag you in anything.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it's fine my dude, don't worry about it. Thanks.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Shadowrun is the only one I've ever played, and honestly, I don't see myself trying a different one because I like it so much.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yo I love burning wheel but the combat throws me off. Do you know anywhere that has a decent tutorial?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll check it out. I'm a setting junkie, but I use GURPS when I run and I'll play any rules at the table. You had me at dark sci-fi.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

+1 for GURPS.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Does anyone have a good system for a somewhat survival based apocalypse game? I'm trying to find one for a mix or the road and fallout.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Savage worlds could cover it, or you might be looking for something closer to mutant year zero

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll stick with GURPS.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

15-16 years ago I remember playing a homebrew Iron Chef GURPS ruleset a friend got off of some BBS. It was kind of amazing.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

+1 for GURPS.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yay, more GURPS people :D I'm mostly just on my blog these days (can link if you want) but ONE DAY I shall return to GMing...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

+1 for Savage Worlds

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I recommend A dirty world if you what a charecter driven system

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

RIFTS is getting a savage worlds rewrite. Super excited.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I don't know how I feel about that. The fun of RIFTS comes from the mechanics, that are to rules what Rob Liefeld is to comics art.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I always felt the fun of RIFTS was the story behind it all and the rules were mostly just cumbersome.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The "we contrived a way to make any setting work" thing was fun (you could have an invasion by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles if you 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

wanted) but the appeal for me was the totally broken power escalation levels. Just look up the Machine People RCC in the Phaseworld book 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What is wrong with being a pathfinder nut? :(

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nothings wrong with it, just found out it wasn't my thing. I honestly didn't know there was other things back then

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sigh... Still no love for Rifts.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I love it the same way I love a 3-legged, deaf, blind, incontinent puppy. It's a total disaster but AWW LOOK AT HIM TRY SO HARD! Also, 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

there's something almost poetically fitting how the only videogame adaptation of Rifts was an N-Gage exclusive 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

:( that did serious MDC right to my feelers...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What about call of cthulhu

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Meh. I ran all my Cthulhu Mythos games in GURPS.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

another really fun one. I'm thinking of doing another one of these, since my friends and I play a whole ton of different games

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm in a similar position. I'm about to enter the alpha stage (with only a few features missing =p). Good luck to both of us.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Feel free to PM if you want to talk mechanics (or game dev in general :-) )

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've got a prototype for a Fallout pen and paper game that uses the core d10 system of the 2nd Edition World of Darkness game.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's the nature of the gamer. If you play enough, you eventually run games. If you run enough, you eventually create your own 1/

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2/ game worlds. And if you create enough game worlds, you eventually create your own system. Happens all us all. Good luck to both of you!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you.

Upvote for Paranoia!

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

That sounds like something a Commie would say.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What is a Glados and where is Protal?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's above your security clearance, citizen

Failure to upvote Paranoia is treason. Treason is punishable by death.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Paranoia. The pen and paper RPG where the instruction book is little more than a pamphlet.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

and the GM section is "Everything we told the players is wrong"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I get the 1984 and Marx brothers reference better than the futurama one...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

All my friends live under rocks....

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Coincidentally all my rocks live under friends.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't know about your system, but check out Exalted. They had a system for stunts that gave bonus dice for cool RP in combat. The idea 1/

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

3/ It encouraged players to get involved more and make the fights cinematic and entertaining.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/ was that you got extra dice for doing more than "I attack." Ie "I grab the pole and swing around to hit him in the back" would be +2 dice

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is that white wolf's Exalted?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

indeed. They put out a new edition a few months ago, and I haven't bought it to know if they system remained, but drivethruRPG has it

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Stunt system is still there and 3rd is miles beyond 2nd. It handily solves the whole mote tapping as combat problem of 2nd and more.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nice! I don't think I've played since 1e. I've just followed it loosely since.
