Friction drilling leaves a 'wall' of material on the hole, which makes it easier for a bolt or a screw. Since there is more leverage on 1/2

As others have said it's more complete weld all the way through the material. It's key to properly relieve the stress through heat induction

Friction welding those shafts together allows for a weld all the way through the joint where as a regular weld only welds the outer edge.
