TheMrGUnit
Magnetorheological suspension uses a damper filled with a fluid that changes viscosity with electric current (1/2)
But it can't apply an additional force on the wheel like the Bose suspension. They're two totally different things only related by magnetism
animaniac
Technically it doesn't change the viscosity of the fluid. It changes the apparent viscosity of the fluid.
Correct, but I also couldn't type that in 140 characters. Hell, I didn't even have room in 280...
Also, try telling a non-engineer that there's a difference between viscosity and apparent viscosity, and wait to see the eyes glaze over.

Profit was the reason it was discontinued. Nothing but profit.
GavinScreaming
No one wants 20k added to the price of a fucking Camry for a little less bumps. High end sports cars have had similar systems put in.
Similar yes, and you're right no-one will pay 20k more per car just for a slightly smoother ride, when that much would get you a much
better car with a smoother ride.
RandomAbscessMemories
It's not a cancer cure or some shit. Profit would be the only reason to add it to cars in the first place.
The point was it didn't make Bose as much as they wanted so they discontinued it.
JohnJacobJingleHeimerSmitt
I think it was mostly the cost, but also these are kind of dangerous to drive without training, you have no road feel
Nah, this is bs. Many cars use active suspension (i.e.Audi Magnetic Ride or Merc Air Suspension) to reduce body movement. They handle fine..
Thats not the same as this technology. This you feel absolutely nothing on the road, you can get out of control without even noticing.
Oh man, a car loosing control is so much more than just body movement. Read up on ESP input parameters:
Similar is loss of traction on flat (slippery) surface such as motorways, where one can feel and measure loss of control
szepasszony
I was just thinking the same thing, feeling the pull of the car is how i know if I'm going around a curve too fast
TheLimpinBiscuit
I don't think the pull would decrease. Centripetal force would still be at work. I'm just guessing, though.

That Lexus came with standard struts or ride height adjustable air bag suspension as an option. Amazing car, but no maglev.
RacecarIsRacecarBackwards
Mercedes Benz' Magic Body Control is pretty awesome.
KirchoffsVoltageLaw
But that's for cornering, not this.
It's an adaptive suspension control system that varies the damping of the individual wheels using a road surface scan. Works in corners too.
That's mercedes active pre-scan.
Numerous production cars have had active air (Lincoln), gas (Rolls), or hydraulic (Citroen) suspensions. But not Bose maglevs.
Migles
Why does that car jumps before hitting the bar?

jake96
I don't think that wooden rail the car leaps in the gif is ferromagnetic, either.
Relikar
The electromagnets in the suspension aren't for detecting road obstructions, it's for the control of the dampers. There would have to be 1/2
Other sensors to detect what's on the road in front of the car in order for the suspension to react the way it does such as radar/camera 2/2
yea, my mistake I assumed it did both. Researching it, I found it's a stunt triggered by a reflective strip in the road picked up by sensors

I mean not really. It's electromagnetic. So most likely that was a metal bar. Different from a concrete speed bump.
That does sound like a valid question, so I'm hoping it can tell the difference between a board and a bump.
concaveUsurper
Well it did fine with the wavy strips and the triangular bumps, though those were slower....
I think that's what NopeBus' criticism is. It DID do fine with the strips, and glided right over at speed. I bet there's an answer online.

Lmao true true
animaniac
Under a magnetic field, it doesn't change the slope of the shear stress shear strain curve (visc.) it only moves the curve up the Y axis
pobody
Woohoo! Found another engineer in the discussion!

I too change viscosity when subjected to electric current.

ReverendAurora
Profit was the reason it was discontinued. Nothing but profit.
GavinScreaming
No one wants 20k added to the price of a fucking Camry for a little less bumps. High end sports cars have had similar systems put in.
ReverendAurora
Similar yes, and you're right no-one will pay 20k more per car just for a slightly smoother ride, when that much would get you a much
ReverendAurora
better car with a smoother ride.
RandomAbscessMemories
It's not a cancer cure or some shit. Profit would be the only reason to add it to cars in the first place.
ReverendAurora
The point was it didn't make Bose as much as they wanted so they discontinued it.
JohnJacobJingleHeimerSmitt
I think it was mostly the cost, but also these are kind of dangerous to drive without training, you have no road feel
adk2852
Nah, this is bs. Many cars use active suspension (i.e.Audi Magnetic Ride or Merc Air Suspension) to reduce body movement. They handle fine..
JohnJacobJingleHeimerSmitt
Thats not the same as this technology. This you feel absolutely nothing on the road, you can get out of control without even noticing.
adk2852
Oh man, a car loosing control is so much more than just body movement. Read up on ESP input parameters:
adk2852
Similar is loss of traction on flat (slippery) surface such as motorways, where one can feel and measure loss of control
szepasszony
I was just thinking the same thing, feeling the pull of the car is how i know if I'm going around a curve too fast
TheLimpinBiscuit
I don't think the pull would decrease. Centripetal force would still be at work. I'm just guessing, though.
szepasszony
Good point

whitepolarbear
i thought there was a production luxury car that had this or something similar. Maybe lexus?
RustyNeX
Many cars have magnetic fluid or air suspension but not this maglev suspension.
fearandloathinginaz
That Lexus came with standard struts or ride height adjustable air bag suspension as an option. Amazing car, but no maglev.
RacecarIsRacecarBackwards
Mercedes Benz' Magic Body Control is pretty awesome.
KirchoffsVoltageLaw
But that's for cornering, not this.
RacecarIsRacecarBackwards
It's an adaptive suspension control system that varies the damping of the individual wheels using a road surface scan. Works in corners too.
KirchoffsVoltageLaw
That's mercedes active pre-scan.
packardcaribien
Numerous production cars have had active air (Lincoln), gas (Rolls), or hydraulic (Citroen) suspensions. But not Bose maglevs.
Migles
Why does that car jumps before hitting the bar?
sonhouse
It wasn't designed to do that. Apparently it sensed the height and anticipated a slope, but wound up doing a sick jump
BedsideTiger
Cause it can.

Yea, so the spikes become non-ferromagnetic instead of steel. Problem solved.
jake96
I don't think that wooden rail the car leaps in the gif is ferromagnetic, either.
Relikar
The electromagnets in the suspension aren't for detecting road obstructions, it's for the control of the dampers. There would have to be 1/2
Relikar
Other sensors to detect what's on the road in front of the car in order for the suspension to react the way it does such as radar/camera 2/2
GonzoTom
yea, my mistake I assumed it did both. Researching it, I found it's a stunt triggered by a reflective strip in the road picked up by sensors
Borys610
No more waiting for the elderly to cross the street.
Manateechica
This comment made me cackle. Thanks
Hossa81
Underappreciated
PlazmicFlame
That is exactly why the jumping part would be removed if this ever goes to market.
FatNibba
You could just add it back in because it is controlled by a computer
GonzoTom
No, spike strips would just be redesigned to not be magnetic.
RJWaters
thats not how this works......
GonzoTom
yea, assumed it was a sensor and damper system. but its not. The jump is a trick though triggered by a sensor to the suspension.
GonzoTom
my mistake

That thing will definitely jump off a cliff due to an ill-placed rock at some point.
myUsernameWasAlreadyTakenAndIHaveAcceptedMyFate
if you're driving fast enough for it to be able to jump over something, chances are you'll fall off that cliff anyway
TimmyDuncan
Imagine making it to the other side though!
twozerooz
Not quite. A lot of highways have bends in them that can easily be made at speed, unless the car jumps, then it will lose traction

You realize that's the point of a warranty, right? The warranty is promising it will last "at least this long", nothing more.
glassweaver
Would you continue buying the same brand phones & computers if they only lasted a little over a year when everyone else lasts way longer?

This is the reason I have never "owned" Bose products. I did a hell of a lot of repairs on them, though... lol.

No more slowing down for speed bumps.
JohnnySooshi
I mean not really. It's electromagnetic. So most likely that was a metal bar. Different from a concrete speed bump.
didgeboy287
That does sound like a valid question, so I'm hoping it can tell the difference between a board and a bump.
concaveUsurper
Well it did fine with the wavy strips and the triangular bumps, though those were slower....
didgeboy287
I think that's what NopeBus' criticism is. It DID do fine with the strips, and glided right over at speed. I bet there's an answer online.
didgeboy287
https://www.cnet.com/news/boses-amazing-car-suspension/ Short answer? Too heavy and expensive, nothing yet on speed bumps.
