Yeah, otherwise it is just bare iron and would rust and/or have stuff sticking to it.

I actually bought two of them at the same auction... this one was cleaned up and ready, the other one was painted.

I've been cleaning it up... everything was good under the paint... no idea why someone would do that.

Fun fact. The dutch oven was inspired by the Dutch process of using sand to cast iron pots. An Englishmen patented the process.....
