I'm making this procedurally generated game called Bad North, and it just spit out a real fun, real tight, night time level for me. Imma tell you about it.
The island layout was pretty simple: almost all enemies had to climb one narrow cliff slope, but there was another small passage at the back of the island.
I told my pikemen to hold the main chokepoint. Pikemen are really good a holding chokepoints, especially when they have high ground. They did a great job. The path was narrow so the enemies got very little advantage of their superior numbers, but my pikes got great advantage of their superior reach.
The enemies started sending archers though. Pikemen don't have shields, so the archers could just pick them off one by one with their arrows from down at the beach. Naturally, I sent my shielded infantry to deal with the archers. They had to be quick though, I failed to pull them back before the next wave hit once, and they got stuck in a confused melee at the narrow beach, just barely managing to fight their way up the hill to the safety behind my steadfast pikemen.
Predictably, I failed to pay sufficient attention to the small secondary path at the back, where a lone boatload of vikings snuck up on me, bypassed my defenses and almost got to my archers before I could send a badly hurt infantry unit to narrowly beat them down.
