Part 1: Bluebottles

Overview

The Bluebottle, or Portuguese Man-O-War ("Physalia utriculus") is an ocean-born hydrozoa (small, predatory marine stingers), which preys mostly on small fish, as its sting is lethal to them. They are commonly found along Australia's Eastern Coast, with over 50,000 cases being reported yearly. Their sting can range from minor irritation to extreme pain, and is all but a right of passage for beachgoers.

Treatment

In the event of a Bluebottle sting, Surf Lifesaving Australia advises the immediate application of hot water to the affected area for a period of ~10 minutes. Followed by ice to numb the pain. No further actions can be taken to reducing the pain other than to minimise movement to reduce the distance the poison can travel within the body.

Any person(s) who are allergic to bee stings should immediately vacate the area if Bluebottles are sighted.
