Algae regrowing has been a problem every time the pool has been fixed. This shouldn't have been a surprise. This was caused by cutting corners and the needed timeline to do the job right. This was just another grift. Went from $3 million to $14 million and still did a shit job so the birthday boy could have his pool.

From what I saw, if they had done any sort of research beforehand, this is basically a known issue where the pipes leading to the pool fill with algae during any maintenance. Leads to blooms on starting it up. So I assume they did no pre-work to stop it, or even knew about it.

Other way around - too warm and the algae can’t survive - should have painted it black. Then the reflection would have been even more pronounced. Light blue would absorb less and allow more favorable conditions for algae.

I mean, there is no real solution. The inflow is connected to the tidal basin, which is connected to the potomac. Even if you treat the inflow pipes, I doubt you can guarantee not one cell of algae can make the transit. And there's overflow active every time it rains, to take out anything you put into it.

I agree. I think the idea is there's ways to get ahead of it so you don't have a sudden full on bloom. Considering all the attention to the pool they could've easily solved the bad press by just pointing out that it was going to happen before hand as a natural part of refilling it. Instead they appeared to be completely unaware that it was a possibility.

The reflecting pools are kind of a perfect storm for algae, and once it gets in it can double its mass daily in the right circumstances - some species of algae, that's down to 8 hours, for certain species in perfect circumstances.
Tons of sun, tons of duckshit as nutrition, and anything that eats algae is also duck food. I'm not sure there is a way to get ahead of it. You can slow down the amount that gets in, reduce initial mass, but once it's in, it's in.

General guidelines are 8ml per liter of 3% hydrogen peroxide. That's 13,736 gallons for the reflecting pool.
For a 12% solution, you're looking at 3,434 gallons.
This will need to be done weekly.

Home Depot sells 12% at $22. They have low markup... so it probably doesn't cost them a whole lot less. But, assuming you could get it for $10/gal in volume, the 3500 gals/week would be $35,000 per week, or $2M per year for peroxide.
But that's OK: they can just starve some more kids on SNAP to pay for it. ?S

It gets worse. There are inflow and outflow channels. One connects to the tidal basin, to replenish losses from evaporation. One is an overflow, to prevent flooding from rainfall. So water (and peroxide) is flowing out every time it rains. And the Tidal basin is connected to the Potomac, which will replenish the algae.

There is no solution here unless they want to engineer a micro-ecosystem.

Nah, it's always been an issue. But they drained it, cleaned it out, and repainted the bottom and sides a brighter blue. Now, when algae blooms you have a clean bright blue backdrop to see it against.

H2O2 would not get "filtered out" by any plant anyway. It reacts with organic and inorganic compounds to produce H2O and O2 in that process. Meanwhile, the organic part gets usually destroyed. H2O2 based chemicals are safe to be dumped in the drain and are relatively environment friendly compared to other compounds like bleach.

I have an 8,000 gallon pool and to kill the algae each season, I use 1/2 gallon of 30% H2O2 solution. No one in this administration can do simple math.

That says they'll need 800 to 1000 gallons, and I'm sure their algae problem is already much worse than your pool. Not to mention, they are adding polluted make-up water from the Potomac, not the chlorinated water you are using. You are also actively filtering and treating with chlorine and they are not.
