3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why are dancing cats so funny? They make me laugh every time, and the cats jus don't look amused at all.

Oooo i like that, very dramatic. I pretty much grew up to the Channel 4 News intro, will always hit home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMgSXHQW-30

All it needs is the THX Sound demo.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just not surprised with American news having a Hollywood film score as it’s theme and the European news themes sound like a night at the club!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The MSNBC "this is who we are" theme has always been the absolute best for me and its suitable because it feels urgent and tragic. Its quite cinematic https://youtu.be/_MtnQEe9kKA

same intro

What I love is that you can tell some of the orchestra are nerding the fuck out in a big way.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What is this in response to?

3 years ago | Likes 262 Dislikes 4

BBC has a countdown to the top of the hour, so they start each news segment at the top of every hour. I think it's 60 seconds long in total. Here's the original: https://www.televisiontunes.com/BBC_News_-_60_Second_Countdown.html

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What's all this then? *translated into British English for you

3 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 3

I BEG YOUR PARDON!? you forgot the 'ello ello ello' at the beginning, you uncultured swine! Honestly...

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

BBC is *fairly* objective, especially comparatively, but they still do the cardinal reporter sin of giving headlines of massacre and death in rather emotionless tones, and can move effortlessly to another story after talking about for example the recent suicide bomber in the Middle East

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 12

The rationale I've heard, and completely agree with, is if people who are not being affected by tragedies (reporters, physicians, etc) allow themselves to get emotional (or perform as such) it invites sympathy for their distress. By keeping a respectful and distant tone they are not obliging any consideration for themselves, and instead keeping focus on those involved. So on the surface it can seem inappropriately cold, but in practice it is actually the most appropriate way to handle it.

I don't understand what you mean? Surely they SHOULD just report what happened?

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

In 1976 an explosion and subsequent landslide of beans at a baked bean factory in downtown Kent-by-the-Wayside killed over 25000 people.

Too soon mate, too soon. They had to use over 10,000 slices of bread to mop up all the sauce.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I don't think this has any specific context, it's just a joke about how much the BBC intro "pips" music is like a cool "techno banger"

Try working for a European corporation…. Our town halls could be deleted scenes from repo the genetic opera.

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Man what a call out. Repo.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and then they segue striaght into "breaking news, 25,000 dead in earthquake" kinda news

3 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 1

"Breaking, African country destablized by British Foreign Adventures further destablized for wealth and mineral extraction, BP spokesperson simply laughed and rolled around on a pile of money, death toll three thousand and rising. Updates shortly." Boop-boop-boop!

They mashed it up with a Dua Lipa song and it’s pretty great https://youtu.be/skK3WoK5Z8A

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also relevant, the kinda cultural influence of the intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdrlWpihxeg

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's just the "top of the hour music" on BBC News channels around the world. It ends with the "sync your watches" beeps and then the news...

3 years ago | Likes 111 Dislikes 1

Ohhh, I didn't realize that's what it was for. I follow them on YouTube so it doesn't have the same function, but here in Canada I remember the CBC radio used to do a straight up 'set your watches' beep with a verbal notice back in the day. This is kind of a neat way to take the same tool and blend it into the flow of the programming, neat!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh, i didn't see your comment, but you're right.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...starts. If 25k people died, it'd be the top story immediately after the music. And it slaps. https://youtu.be/s-uzMl4GBOk ...

3 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

People have been making mash-ups of it. https://youtu.be/skK3WoK5Z8A

3 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

The pitch change at 10 seconds though

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

BBC radio used to do a top-of-the-hour six 'pips' at the higher frequency (with the last one elongated) so you could set your watch to the correct time. The TV version does it for ten seconds because it goes with the music. https://youtu.be/CScAX2iu66c
