Why Arming Teachers is Idiotic

This is the armed sheriff’s deputy outside the Parkland high school. During the shooting, video surveillance showed him taking cover outside rather than going in. He has since resigned, with the sheriff commenting that he was “devastated” and “sick to his stomach” by the deputy’s actions.

People behave unpredictably during a crisis. Even with extensive training, panic and instinct can be hard to overcome.

If we can’t rely on a trained sheriff’s deputy to have saved these kids, why the fuck do people think 46-year-old Mrs. Johnson the sophomore English teacher would make a fucking difference?

An active shooter situation is volatile and high-stress. My dad is a marine and a veteran, and he’s taken the proper training courses to handle these situations. Most people are simply not capable of controlling their fear, etc. to be an effective defense in these scenarios. More often, an untrained civilian with a gun will make the situation worse. They’ll aim poorly, shoot reactively, and confuse law enforcement.

Arming teachers is not only a poorly conceived idea, it’s downright disgraceful. We should be ashamed that our country is so regressive that while our education continues to underperform and remains underfunded, there is an actual movement to have our children taught by prison guards rather than educators.
