Half a fucking cup of salt

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 4

It's not going in the icecream, it's just a process chemical with the ice to drop the temperature.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I did this with a group of 5 y/o. I will never believe this works. I ended up shaking all the bags & the kids wouldn't eat it.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We did this in my science class, we were dumbases and salted the vanilla bag making it unfreezable, I was the dumbass who tasted it *cringe*

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why does no one on imgur know what half and half is? And why don't they have google?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We just use liquid nitrogen. Mix sugar and cream then pour in the cold and stir like crazy.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Reminded me of My Drunk Kitchen when she tries to do this. http://imgur.com/9QYr6Nl

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This time on next week at Buzzfeed

11 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 2

Or most science classes. Ive done this twice at both middle school and high school.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

~I'm happy, feeling glad, made ice-cream in a bag, I'm useful, but not for long, the melting, it's comin' on~

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We did this in school once...I somehow manage to fail so bad made some kind of butter...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You could have overmixed it . Especially if you used heavy cream instead of half and half :)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy moly, thank you all for the upvotes! Didn't expect that at all.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

my class did this in grade school, we all vomited furiously shortly afterwards

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what? why?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

none of us did it right, we were early in the 4th grade and so once we saw one kid vomit, we all kind of just followed, because we could

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"half cup half & half" what is going on

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Step 1 was 3 steps. And you mean "add" not "combine."

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This fails to address that you're going to shake at least 5 minutes. That doesn't sound long unless you're shaking a wet salty bag of ice

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do this regularly when we run out of ice cream, it just seems normal and simple to me, but whenever someone sees me they look at me like

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

lmfao that's how they look at you?

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He has a weird hairstyle so it's just how we look at him in general

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I added that because he just stopped there

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ima start doing this

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Half a cup if half and half *brain explodes*

11 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

What the f is even half and half...

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Light cream.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Type of cream

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All I could think of

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The "science" given by OP is incorrect. A lowering of freezing point won't make it freeze, it only affects what temp it could freeze. 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

*NaCl

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The cooling effect actually occurs because dissolution of NaCl in water has negative enthalpy of solution and is endothermic. Science! 2/2

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ah the joys of elementary school science experiments. They were the best.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

TIL my elementary school sucked

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We do this all the time in Girl Scouts! I recommend rock salt if you have it. Also, use thicker ziploc bags so your ice cream isn't salty.

11 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I did it at a busy outreach session recently and someone threw their bag to "shake" it and hit me in the face. Ahhh Girl Scouting :)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Protip- use heavy cream not half and half.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Tried that once. The cream hardens too quickly and it turns out horribly.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mmmm, yes, much richer result

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does it bother anyone else that there are three "step one"s??

11 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 1

First thing I noticed.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes. Yes it does.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Kinda.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The use of "combine" made me irrationally irritated. You combine multiple things in a list; you ADD one thing at a time.

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Yes! It was very irritating. My guess is video screen caps but still, why not list the THREE ingredients on one image?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For some reason I thought vanilla was vodka, and wondered at the bottom what happened to the vodka. . .

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What the duece is half and half

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Light cream, apparently - around 12-13% .

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A liquid creamer you can buy for coffee and other stuff

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

AH! american as hell is what it is. its half cream & half milk

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's basically extra cream in the milk. In the US it's 10.5%-18%.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We have it in Canada too! Maybe... North American as hell?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did this in 4th grade. Fucking delicious. Only had vague memories of it though, thank you for the science!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Physics professor did this for one of our labs in college... instantly became the favorite professor in the department

11 years ago | Likes 106 Dislikes 0

Mine once did it with liquid nitrogen. Best lecture assistant meeting ever.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Physics prof did this and didn't use liquid nitrogen? Blasphemy!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My 8th grade science teacher didn't have any lessons left in May that year, so we did experiments like this every day. It rocked.

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Ah, the famous freezing point depression lab, I see you've done it as well.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My gramma has an ice cream and this is pretty much the same process. We used to make it every summer - never had better ice cream :)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Excuse me - an ice cream maker.* Must improve my proofreading skills....

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Half-and-Half of what?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

half cream half milk

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did this once. Saltiest ice cream ever.

11 years ago | Likes 473 Dislikes 9

To everyone complaining about bags: put ingredients a small coffee can, put that and ice inside a big can, and just roll it back and forth.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine tasted like the plastic bag. Tried it once, will never do it again

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ugh that's the saltiest thing I've ever tasted... And I once had a heaping bowl of salt

11 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

I laughed well, gather the points.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Then don't cream in the bag.

11 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

U have to be sure to double bag it. Also u need to use rock salt, works better and also harder to dissolve

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Directions unclear, added salt to small bag

11 years ago | Likes 101 Dislikes 1

I too thought it said to add salt to the smaller bag.

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Instructions unclear, poured salt on my dick.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Put caramel in it. Immediate salted caramel ice cream!

11 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I had salt water ice cream made with water from the bay in Dingle when I was in Ireland. Probably the best ice cream I have ever had.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

use coffee cans instead. one big one and a smaller one. then you can roll it around :D

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Use cocaine.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

*did this wrong once

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ziplocks arent hundred percent water proof, or osmosis proof, i double bagged the icream one.

11 years ago | Likes 200 Dislikes 0

I read that as double banged and was confused.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the tip! Pun intended

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Double bagging is actually much less effective.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It worked on your mom.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Apparently not...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This saved my ice cream, thank you.

11 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 0

or you know... go to the fuckin store. but w/e

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 24

Science is way more fun than going to the store. but w/e

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I did this once with a large coffee can (with a lid) and a smaller can. Wrapped the can in foil and rolled it back and forth. Bam! Ice cream

11 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Sounds like a good reason to add caramel sauce on top!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*did this wrong once

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What exactly is half & half?

11 years ago | Likes 345 Dislikes 5

Half and half is a combination of whole milk and cream with a fat % that is between 11% and 18%, whereas anything above 18% is cream.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most commonly it's used as a creamer for coffee.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Something that makes ice cream

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Half cream, half milk

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

cream for coffee

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

half this half that

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It's a deal prostitues give, one half is oral sex while the other half is vaginal sex.

11 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 3

Ignore the responses and do a Google search.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Australia, half Tooheys New (pale ale) half Tooheys Old (dark). Never heard of this milk/cream shite lol

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I've never heard of this. Why ruin Toohey's Old?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Beats me lol. I know of it, but Im with you...wouldn't drink it :p

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Half milk, half horse semen

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

artificial sweetner (and yes it causes cancer)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 14

You might be thinking of sweet n low.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Hah!!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A pizza

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I'm now thinking maybe like single cream?

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

half cream

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup, at least that's what I figured when I lived in the uk

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Single cream has a slightly higher milk fat content than half and half, 18% compared to 12-15%.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

thanks, that makes sense, now i just need to work out the maths of how to dilute it!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No need! Using single cream will actually just give you a richer result. The thing is it's harder to find in North America than half&half.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The name of my testicles.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

sorry about that testicular cancer, bruh

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A milk product high in fat Like how there's 1% 2% Whole/D milk is usually 3.5%, Half and Half is usually 12.5%. Heavy whipping cream is ~30%

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

thank you

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For the Norwegians: Kremfløte is 38%, lett krem 25%, mat 20%, lett mat 10%, and kaffefløte also 10%.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

As a lover of half and half, these all sound delicious.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The 20% matfløte (cooking cream, lit. "foodcream") does make everything better. :)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To the rest of the world: Normal (whipping) cream is fine for this, but you can make a 1:1 mixture of milk and cream to abide by the recipe.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Norway it's a pizza deal where you can top two halves of a pizza with different ingredients

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

TIL "half and half" has very different meanings to some people.

11 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

According to Wikipedia, lots of things.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Wales it's half chips and half rice

11 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 1

I never realised this was a Welsh thing til I moved to Leeds for a bit and everyone looked at me like I had crapped on the table.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You welshies sure have a lot of time on your hands, don't you?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

As in potato chips? Is this for take away meals or something?

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 7

I don't about anywhere else but in the UK chips are thicker fries. We still have fries here too. And what you call chips are crisps.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's awkward... we call both chips and the listener just has to chose which type fits the situation best.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry, our friend above doesn't speak american. He means fries. Only we chop them to be thicker because skinny American fries are shit.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Haha, no I am Australian so I say chips too, I had just never thought of them as being complimentary to rice!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As well as... instead of... Curry sauce on chips was a classy student staple way back when

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup potato chips. Usually served with a curry

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I really want that option here! Yum :D

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He means potato frys to you yanks.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it is milk cream, i believe it is 18% butter fat, compared to whipping/heavy cream which is 40% butterfat. used alot in coffee.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it's a coffee creamer in the US (and canada?) that is apparently "half milk and half cream". it has a light cream flavor and isn't sugary

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Half liqour half mixer

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

a whole

11 years ago | Likes 531 Dislikes 8

hi dad

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Science!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is an Microsoft joke. "information you gave, while technically accurate, was completely useless.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Listen you...

11 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

That was one hell of a dad joke!

11 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 1

In Canada/US it's a cream (name refers to half cream and milk)

11 years ago | Likes 147 Dislikes 2

In Brazil half & half means nothing.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

in brussels (belgium) it's half white wine & half champagne

11 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

In Sweden, half fries, half potato mash ;)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So this would make an awesome slushie ;)

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

But frozen wine is shit!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

oh... so its not like a daiquiri? I've never had either

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Half and Half is only found north of the Mason/Dixon line in the US; I used to do coffee promotions, and in the south we couldn't buy it.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

Er...I don't know how long ago this was for you but I've lived in Georgia and Texas and had half and half in both states

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

When we were working in Nashville, people literally had never heard of it, except for one vendor who was originally from Connecticut.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Might only be certain parts of the south, I bought half&half all the time when I lived in Florida. (for as much as Florida is the "south")

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Florida: so far south it’s north.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You know what they say about Florida: "the farther north you go, the more south you are"

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I see, interesting.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

def can buy half n half in the south US. sauce: we lives there

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Half cream, half milk

11 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 3

wow, this was the clearest answer given

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'm scotland it's a pint made of half lager half cider

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I second this. -California bartender

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

also a 1/2 Harp 1/2 Bass!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm coming over, Scotland.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In Germany that's minced meat, half beef half pork. I guesssss you should stick to the dairy product though

11 years ago | Likes 139 Dislikes 2

Yeah that really confused me :D

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

or just replace the ice with barbecue coal, salt with a match, and bags with a barbecue grill

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So I wasn't the only one really confused. Good

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

as an european: half & half OF FUCKING WHAT?

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Half and half is half cream, half milk (about 12% milk fat), and is often sold as a coffee creamer in Canada and the US.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

thank you :D

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No worries :)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
