It's pretty ironic the number of ignorant Americans bitching about not having something that they actually have.
SickOfThisCessPool
I tweeted the police. The tweet was deleted

Former dispatcher - unfortunately, it’s literally bc of money. Need a special program to do it and it’s not free.

Shot in face. LOL Send nudes.
WeenusMaGee
In Australia the murderer is a magpie
PistolPeat
You can in the US
FloofTumbleWeeds
No, In Scotland we run towards them, pull them out of burning cars, punch them & kick them in the nuts so hard that we sprain foot tendons.
somnialunatica5772
why is a murderer texting the police in Australia?
BooneDocs9
In Indiana you can
Craigeypoo
FOR SCOTLAND!
Ijustwantquiet
So you still have to be a criminal to enter Australia?
kwkspectre
Here in America you grab your Remington 870 pump action shotgun, load 5 rounds of double-ought buck super magnum, and go to work.
ShiroMazus
I work for 000 in Australia and there are actually two ways to non-verbally contact the emergency services.
fyrstormer
Didgeridoos don't count.
StephenDaniels
I know you can dial 911 and say 'WTF Dominos this is all messed up, you need to send a man down here right now,' and a cop or 2 will come.
EF5Cyniclone
There is no standard procedure for that. It might work if you get the dispatcher to understand, 911 does get plenty of prank calls.
darthlawsuit
Here in America you finally get to play "America Fuck yeah" and use the machine gun you have been saving just for this occasion.
saylorasshat
In iowa you can text dispatch
TheMARSK
In the UK, you can text the emergency services as long as you register your phone beforehand. Source: Am deaf, have done this.

TEXT! TEXT! TEXT DA POLICE! Text em..

Lol here in ‘Murcia we shoot them

Dad has plenty of swords. He'll just grab the nearest broadsword
I saw the outcome of that scenario in Indiana Jones.

My old pharmacist used to accidentally enter 911 instead of 913 (our area code) on our fax machine and we'd *always* get a response back...
anonnona887
Every major city has a text service. Hell even small towns are getting into it since you know, phones are getting more accessible and cheapr
Unless they're talking about specific counties/ non-emergency numbers.
caledric
You can text 911 in PA

Police: New phone. Who dis?

They are currently integrating SMS services into 000 calls here in Australia

I just listened to an episode of Sword&Scale, 911 op was trying to get answers, but the girls couldn't talk. Would help if she could text.
TheOriginalGingaNinja
Yessss my Sword and Scale people!
It's so good!!!
CamelWides6
Honestly it is pretty fucking stupid that you can’t.In A lot of this situations, it would be more practical to text..
arunydv3000
Yes like while driving
The problem is the sheer quantity of abuse that would be possible if Text 911 were available.
cappygold
As long as they don't respond while my phone is not on vibrate
moosehortons
My phone is forever and always on silent completely. I don't even know what sound my phone would make honestly. So I'm safe
paramedicnotadriver
It is available. The timing is almost instant. Source: 911 operator demonstrated it to us when the new call center opened.

actually you can text 911 in certain areas in the US . it's meant for deaf people

I suppose in an emergency it wouldn't hurt to try

911 dispatcher here. It's meant for everyone, but you're encouraged to call in if you can. TTY is for deaf people specifically.
PGMacDesign
Do you just text 911 then? Or do you have numbers specific to your area?
Just texting 911 will get it to us. No special numbers aside from that. Though some areas dont participate for some reason. Ours does.
Great to know! Thank you for the info.

Deaf folks cringe when police depts say they have TTYs. They've been obsolete for years. We use videophones. Also, TTYs are not texting.
I dont know about other places but we can also accept videophone translations. Though admittedly our training doesn't cover it in detail.
Anyone can accept VP relay calls; all the training you need is to know not to hang up on us. Sounds obvious, but many places do just that.
Huh. Well that's still good information to know! I know my county makes us test TTY on silent calls but we didnt touch on relay calls much.
TehWeinerWizard93
How will deaf people hear a burglar?
We don't need to. Whether or not they scream when we shoot them means nothing to us.

Do you... Not feel your front door open or close? Or your walls rattle? Or feel floors vibrate? Most people don't exactly walk lightly. Or
feel your windows open or shut? These are legit questions... I'm hard of hearing and am actually not sure if hearing folks rely on vibration

Here in Detroit, we text our organ-legger and tell them to prepare a bathtub full of ice. Like free money just walked in the door.
ensensu
I'm getting sooo much xp this time.

I guess it's been a while since I've been to Detroit. That's just a whole other dimension down there
iusuallyonlysaynicethings
Detroit's not even that tough any more. A whole lotta hipsters. Its flint you gotta watch out for. That's a whole new lvl o scary.
GreenYawgmoth
I am legit surprised they never made an Escape From Detroit movie. Someone get Kurt Russell and John Carpenter on the phone!
ThatQuietlySmirking
Nah, John Carpenter doesn't make documentaries.
but would Snake Plissken actually getting out alive be too unrealistic?
Snooj
Here in America we all have guns so if someone breaks in we accidentally shoot ourselves.
flavivsaetivs
There are over 60,000 successful defensive firearms uses every year according to the Obama Administration's 2013 CDC study.
Thanks Obama.
Like seriously that CDC study gave us some much-needed data.
Actually the CDC is explicitly forbidden by federal law from studying the effects of gun use on the health of the American public.
merlinious
No, they are not allowed to fund any gun research. But that effectively means the same thing i guess...
Obama ordered a study in 2013 after repealing that ban (I don't know the specifics of how he did that though).
...in other words, they collected data about gun use but didn't actually propose any conclusions based on the data.
Fair enough.
The ban is still in effect. The CDC just snuck through a loophole by not specifically studying the *health risks* of gun use.
