I lived with a tribe of Amazonians that made a much simpler version of this. They used it when moving from place to place since they were highly nomadic.
I think that calling it the only way to hold fire for thousands of years is a little off. People all over rhe world needed to be able to carry fire around, and came up with many ingenious ways to do it.
Looks like they skipped two ingredients there. Charcoal, sulfer and potassium nitrate AKA saltpeter make gunpowder. Not sure what the other thing is, could be brown sugar which is used sometimes to lower the ignition temperature but it also slows down the burn and makes it more smokey.
in the correct proportions and mixing they make gunpowder, but in other proportions you can get different results. It's sort of like how there's so many different breads that are different combos and preparations of water, flour and yeast.
I had thought I remembered there being an even older version of this, and it turns out I was right, so please enjoy the results of my ten minute rabbit hole down wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fomes_fomentarius

Pretty sure travellers in the Northern hemisphere didn’t use bamboo fibres to carry their fire.

Careful trying to reproduce this. Get the recipe wrong and you've made a pipe bomb.

I’d say that’s why they specified “in your pocket”. Used a specific parameter that only this technique fulfilled.

Yeah, indigenous Australians knew of and used various slow burning hollow plants and plant parts. I'm sure every culture had something similar.

Yeah sure, I'm just talking about me seeing ingredients and them not mentioning. And my guess is because it makes gunpowder.

Tl;dr people used a weird ass mushroom to do pretty much this, except some of them probably boiled it in pee, fun stuff 👍🏻
