The president doesn't have anywhere near as much power as she is capable of having in the senate (especially when she can realistically stay there for 30 years, then run for president, serve 8 years, then retire at an age younger than Sanders is now, and still arguably have been too old to have been president)

It's rare for any president to have that sort of stature before they are nominated. Obama wasn't a household name in 2006. Even George W was essentially unknown 99, Clinton was largely unregarded outside of Arkansas until 89. Historically, and with basically one terrible terrible exception, being too well known is not a good way to get elected
