For those curious, having a horse swim in water is an excellent way for them to build even muscle, have an intense workout that doesn't add trauma to their feet and joints, and also keeps them cool. Unlike with humans, it's very difficult for horses to swim so a single session like this is usually enough for one day.
I don't know why, but it never occurred to me that horses could swim. I only ever see them in the context of riding, or running in herds in the plains.
I just came back from Mongolia and the horsies there loved running into watering holes (or a river). I think they will sometimes have to cross rivers, so swimming would be a necessary skill. And most animals can swim.
