I've also read it was partly to focus awareness on lesbian rights which had gotten a bit overshadowed by the gay rights movement (understandable due to the AIDS crisis) so they put their letter front and center. My state's ACLU chapter has recycled that idea of rearranging the order to showcase the current most marginalized group by bumping the T to the front of the line. Don't know if the ACLU is doing that as a whole, but I think its pretty cool.

It feels so liberating to go from: "I-I'm not GAY, SHUTTUP!" when I was younger to just: "Yea? And?" Like it's incredible that we've collectively siphoned the power from that insult and turned it into something that's just a matter-of-fact statement now (mostly, we still have a LOT of holdouts that need some help re-aligning.)
