I will say it again. The most unbelievable part of that sci fi movie was the amount of restraint Superman showed when he was face to face with Lex and just screamed to his face to give back the dog, instead of ANYONE else would have done, throw him off the window and have anyone else there tell you how to get back the dog.
If I were in Superman's place during that "where's the dog?" scene I would just go all snydercut on that bald fuck and tossed him into orbit. Like what's the legal consequence of killing one person, Lex? Not much. The only thing protecting his smug ass is Superman being a saint of a person.
So I just watched this movie a couple of weeks ago. I was prepared for whatever it was that caused all the outrage and "wokeness". It never happened. I still don't understand. I was fully expecting his parents to say he was born a girl and transitioned when he came to Earth or something. Pretty meh movie overall.
Its woke because those people want supes to be like invincible's dad or the supers from the boys. Also it has him fighting against a wealthy man and winning. Also it has him supporting a palestinian coded group that is being eradicated by an isreli coded group
Agree with the meh part. The story line was lame and mostly copied from prior writing with minor tweaks. The inclusion of the super dog might have worked if done differently. It really just felt like some ceos sat in a room pitching ideas and one was like "a dog, people love dogs." Then changing the story so his real parents where terrible pos people was unnecessary. They also gave his adopted parents the short end of the stick as well.
Tbh I'd like that take. I'm not one who thinks Supes should be a power fantasy. I disliked Injustice's Supes. I *like* Supes being a good person. But I resonate more with comic book Thor who is equally good but also doesn't act like a doormat.
9/10s of Lex's behavior is that unflinching calm of doing wtf he cares and Supes will treat him like an unruly puppy. Even after he has killed several people, or tried to kill him.
Just imagining a drunk Kara kicking over machines, pulling doors off hinges, whistling loud enough to shatter windows to try and get Krypto's attention, all the while screaming out, "WHERE'S MAH FUCKIN' DAWG, LEGS!! LICKS, LIZZY, LONNIE, FUCKEVER YOUR NAME IS!"
I remember someone on Tumblr pointed out that when Clark confronted Lex that wasn't anger he was displaying, that was fear. He was afraid for his and Lex's life.
By that metric she isn't "stronger" than Clark. Being stronger would mean that even if Clark wasn't holding back he'd still be weaker than her. It is more reasonable to consider that they are both equally "strong" but Kara is more "dangerous" as she has less restraint than Clark.
Ironically, that describes Wonder Woman, too. She's incapable if backing down from a fight, and will fight herself to the point of death by exhaustion if others aren't there to stop her.
It was my understanding that in stories that she beats Clark it's because she had a life on Krypton where she is not Super. Basically the premise being she has developed skills that Clark never needed to.
Generally no. Clark has had more time under a yellow sun. But also, Clark has more time under a yellow sun to give a measured response. IE Clark is always hitting things the exact amount to not kill or maim a person. Kara simply doesn't have the reference to hit things that lightly.
They tried to pamper it so that the new character would be more powerful, so they did state it. It's never actually shown other than those opening stories, mind, Supergirl is constantly struggling.
The writers did the same with his son already having Batman stating an hybrid is (probably?) going to be stronger than his father. Which is just so much BS rolled up. Supes is an adult male who has been soaking sun for longer than the two with all the experience that comes with it.
So the trick is to make your film bright, loud, and simple. Then there will be no end to the extent that people will overthink it.
Guys, there is no level on which the monkey scene makes sense. It's like James Gunn forgot how the "infinite monkeys, infinite typewriters" thing even went. 1
It’s a comic movie. They leaned more into the absurd comic part of it. Just roll with it. If you want a brilliant piece of cinema then don’t look for capes and underwear outside their pants.
Nah, I can see just as well as any normal person that the Snyderverse is worse. This was at least a fun movie. I enjoyed watching the movie. I did not enjoy watching Justice League.
at the risk of feeding a troll. a mad scientist (lex luthor) modifies a bunch of monkeys (they don't naturally have electrodes coming off their scalps) to use as a botnet. this isn't a 'infinite monkeys infinite typewriters' situation. you misreading the text of a work doesn't mean people are overthinking it.
" you misreading the text of a work doesn't mean people are overthinking it" - Are you seriously trying to claim that Gunn wasn't going for "infinite monkeys / infinite typewriters" with his imagery of a visually-endless number of monkeys, each with their own computer keyboard? Okay.
Making allusions to it doesn't change the fact it is literally a meat-botnet of monkeys driven by computers to type out shit en-masse to clog up social media with. And as noted, yes that is absolutely the sort of shit gold/silver age Lex would do. Beyond that it's basically a one-and-done gag scene of showing exactly what sort of, and level of, asshole Lex is because it'd be far easier to just skip the monkeys and let the computers do it. Especially when right after is Krypto wired up similarly.
i never claimed he wasn't evoking that imagery. but the execution expands on it. Luthor the character is inherently an unserious person and would absolutely train a bunch of monkeys to spout shit on the internet.
As long understand, this version of Kara is based on Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorroe. She’s as wholesome and good to her core as Clark but with a lot more trauma informing that (and every now and then she likes to get sloshed)
wholesome and good to the core? She goes to red star planets to get drunk and party, to forget the death of everyone she knew. Not that getting drunk is the worst thing, but wholesome it is not.
You're taking the one clip and basing her personality on it. I read the story the OP mentioned. She is good, she is wholesome, she is heroic and puts herself in harm's way for the sake of others. Enjoying unwinding with a good drunk doesn't make her unwholesome.
Essentially, yeah. Clark was a baby when Krypton went kaput. Kara grew up there. I don't know what age they'll set her as when departing, but, yeah, most depictions have her as at least a young teen when Krypton meets it's end. She's a young person dealing with the loss of not just her parents, but of literally everything she's ever known, and her one purpose, taking care of baby Kal-El, is stripped from her before she knows it. He's older than she is, raised on earth, knowing nothing of-
-Krypton. The one person Kara had that she thought she could have related to, with grieving the loss of their homeworld and their people, just...isn't capable of doing that in a meaningful way for her. Clark can be bummed about Krypton, but its lacking in depth, just because he doesn't register what was lost. Not like Kara is forced to do. So...yeah, long winded way of saying she's got a *lot* of personal trauma that she's dealing with.
Its weird that I just realized that I'm not aware of there being any Elsewhere comics where this happens. Just Kal and Kara ending up on earth, but Kara being the one to raise him, and her having to deal with trying to keep him safe and fed and all while also trying to figure out humanity. As far as I know,.we always have the opposite, where Clark is the one providing some stability to Kara, where he's always established a place for himself on Earth before Kara shows up.
See, Lex was worried about Clark, he should have really been worried about Kara. As this version of her.... Feels like she could be a lot to deal with.
In Crisis on Infinite Earths, fighting the big bad, Superman and Superboy are knocked out of commission. Supergirl keeps fighting and she fights to the DEATH.
"Uncle Jor-El says he need you to watch your baby cousin for a couple of decades. There's money for pizza in the rocket. Don't get lost on the intergalactic highway or you'll be late."
I liked it, the girl should display serious trauma that Clark has no fucking clue how to deal with, she's usually between 13 and 17 when she's sent from krypton. Not to mention it's often hinted or outright stated she was expected to care for him. Planet destroyed and "fostering" her cousin is alot for a teenager to cope with.
One of my favorite DC animations with supergirl is when she saves lois from kidnappers and the guy was like "Well, you cant hurt me just like superm..." and then she breaks his arm. Oh boy do i love sassy supergirl.
If they're too similar, it's just a gender bent Superman. Which undermines her as her own character. The circumstances of their arrival are also much different. Clark came to earth a baby, learning about Krypton much later. Kara was 6yo when Krypton fell.
It's essentially like how Fry is older than the Professor on Futurama. He was born earlier, but was frozen in time. By the time he was unfrozen the Professor was born and lived to an old age.
She is both older but also younger. Time relativity shenanigans happened on her way to Earth. So, Clark arrive first and aged faster than she did. So by the time she arrived he was already an Adult man, where she was more a teenager (Though ages varied depending on version of the story) Which is why she is both older than him, and younger than him.
Lex is a plain old human. No matter how smart or prepared he is (or thinks he is), he'd never defeat either Clark or Kara if they decided it was time to take the gloves off.
Basically every Batman vs super man situation isn’t about Batman actually winning, it’s about proving a point. Ghat point usually being “even if I can’t beat you, someone will” or trying to smack some sense into super man about something stupid he did. Or it’s Red Son and commie Batman is actively trying to kill him.
He could, because Superman is functionally a speedster. And if a speedster wants you dead, then you are going to die, no matter what you do. Batman only ever has a fighting chance because Clark doesn't want to kill him. Because he can move faster than Bruce can react. And he's strong enough to blow through any structure Bruce might use against him. Outside of Kryptonite or Magic.
Batman is a bitch. Any supervillain coupd kill Batman. But they are never after him, until he meddles. Even then Batman is just a human with no powers, even if training you cannot tell me Joker couldn't straight up just murder him.
I mean, Batman's villains have come close to killing him, even Joker. Except that Joker doesn't really want to kill Batman in most continuities. He has no qualms killing Robins, though.
Yeah, but in function, the Joker has never actually killed any Robins in main continuity. The ones robin, that he was thought to have killed, end up still being alive and came back as red hood.
Literally every time it's BvS and Batman comes out on top, it's because either Supes is still holding back or distracted or already worn down, or Bats takes the first shot. Bats has explicitly stated on multiple occasions, if Superman were to full on stop holding back and throw away his morals, there's anywhere between 2 and 4 people in the DC Universe that can stop him.
Clark could just grab him and throw him into space. There's no way you can counter an enemy that can move faster than a bullet and can throw you into space.
Yup, in The Dark Knight Returns, Superman just tanked a nuke. And he didn't even expect Bruce to fight Bruce like that. It took Batman a long time to prepare for the fight. Any other time, Superman could've swooped in and killed him. But that's not the point of the scene. The point is to prove to Superman that he is not as invincible among humans as he thinks he is.
In Injustice, however, they have that superman pill that levels the playing field. Which makes Alfred almost kill Superman.

Depends on the continuity. DC's kryptonian power levels are all over the place.

No idea. But Clark grew up surrounded by people he could crush by breathing wrong. Makes sense that he's more naturally restrained.
