People like this tend to migrate to organizations where their behavior is easiest to engage in. That's why you see so many so them in organized religion, police, conservative politics, etc.
These types of organizations all have several aspects in common that makes their behavior easier to get away with: a strong (male) hierarchy built on not disobeying your superiors, an 'us versus them' mentality, and a willingness to sweep problems under the rug instead of weeding it out.

Yup, this is 100% what happened to my father. He was abused as a child and when he told his parents (who HAD to have already known) he was told to stfu because saying stuff like that could get good people in trouble and he wouldn’t want to do that to his priest. He grew into a volatile alcoholic who lived a very depressing, angry life and left nothing to his children but trauma. He drank himself to death. I used to be angry at him, but now I’m angry at what happened to him.
