My dog goes ballistic when she sees a fox. She used to jump the fence, but we’ve built up the area she was using to do that, but I have to physically remove her from the back yard as she cries and runs around. The foxes don’t give a crap. They may be underweight and malnourished, but they know they can kick her 60 pound ass. Of course, this cat could kick my dog’s ass as well.

House cats are this weird mix of fearless and terrified of things, it comes from being a pure carnivore that's so small and association with humans for so long.
Like a stoat or a badger they survive via the "make you pay for it" theory. Sure big animal can kill one but in the wilds without antibiotics the dozens of razor slashes you get to take down the cat are probably not worth it.

Usually they don't mess with adult cats. They may prey on kittens, which is why cats attack them at any opportunity (also because they're food competitors). But adult cats and foxes are pretty evenly matched. Are you sure they weren't eaten by a coyote or something of similar size?
My old cat when I was a kid was an indoor/outdoor cat. My parents got her declared (done get me started on that shit. But I was a kid and didn't know any better. Anyways, she was the queen of the neighborhood. She would harass every other cat and fox that came near our house. Such a little fucking monster. She was the best.
