do you see what I see

Sep 14, 2024 4:38 PM

found this funny and wanted to share as it's a great example of how transphobia hurts everyone, and a lot of it just becomes misogyny. Good reminder that if in doubt it's much better to treat people with kindness than trying to be a dick:)

And that she censored it by replacing an I with a 1, like she genuinely thinks it's a slur, because Elon says so.

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

She probably does think that, but also Twitter puts extra moderation on tweets with "cis" or "cisgender" (potentially including hiding them from others), so censoring the word like that is a good idea either way.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

The only good idea is to leave Xitter behind.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I look at it by being required to say "right side driving" whenever you speak of cars in the US. Are there left side driving? Sure. Does that mean everyone should need to say that their car is right side driving?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 13

Sure, do you also buy into the idea that you shouldn't have to say straight if you're not talking about gay people? It's the same flavor of bigotry and comparing it to talking about which side of the road people drive on is dehumanizing and disrespectful.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Are you arguing for me or against me? 96% of the population is straight, so having to clarify sexuality when there's an obvious majority seems unnecessary at best. If an outlier wishes to convey preferences fine, but that doesn't require labels for everyone.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

No one is twisting your arm to say anything. We say cisgender when we need to distinguish people from trans people. Stop jumping at ghosts and buying into the propaganda - it's really not as complicated as the right would have you believe.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

That's the point. You don't need to distinguish. Unless the person who is trans wishes to point out they are, accepting someone for who they want to be (man or woman) should be the default. Creating more labels isn't going to increase inclusiveness.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

The other two comments point out your idiocy/apologisim far better than I could, but your analogy is so flawed I can only hope it's deliberate.

Cars sold in North America/mainland Europe/hundreds of countries across the globe are marketed as "Left hand drive", and cars sold in the more sensible (/s) countries as "Right hand drive".

How did you fuck up which side the fucking controls are in your bigoted analogy you cloaca?

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's the point, Einstein. There's a dominant percentage. Hence, it's not required to be elaborated upon. I live in a right side driving country and come from a left. At no point did anyone need to clarify what the norm is in either country because it's already assumed.

Cisgender Woman = Was born a Woman and identifies as a Woman

Some mouthbreathing troglodyte: "cISgeNdEr Is nOt a THinG!!! aRe yOu ACtuAlLy A wOmaN????"

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cisgender is an actual technical term. These pople are fucking morons. Thats also clearly a woman, just having strong muscles doesnt make you man.

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I appreciate your supportive comment and you are correct in this case, but I'd also like to encourage you to consider that even if someone "clearly" looks one way, that doesn't mean that's what they are. What if she didn't identify as cisgender? Would she still "clearly" be a woman?

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

Cis or not, if she identifies as a woman and says so, then she is. The person replying to her checked her pronouns and still called her a man. I checked and it's a person with a notable history of terfdom. An absolute FART.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes, the evidence that clearly makes her a woman is what she states. However, you implied that how she looks can be used as the evidence when you said "that's clearly a woman". Unless I misunderstood? But I'm not sure how else one would interpret that phrase.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not everything exists by itself. I made that statement after making sure I was informed and seeing the circumstances. It was made under context that this was indeed a woman, identified as a woman and this one asshole under their own standards could see it was in the photo, they even admitted they checked their pronouns and saw they identified as a woman too but the supposed feminist, but actually a FART, purposefully called her a man anyway. For being strong.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sorry, I'm still confused and could use further clarification: part of what you are saying is that by looking at the photo you can clearly see that it's a woman? If your original statement was to back up and support that this is indeed a woman, is it not undermining the whole point by using visuals as part of the proof?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Respectfully, if someone "clearly" looked a way and I referred to them as such, and they corrected me, I would simply apologize and refer to them as they'd prefer to be referred. People assume a lot of things in life, it's natural. Pushing back when corrected is the greater evil, imo.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That's not what I'm saying. The commenter was using how she looks as "evidence", not as a casual guess of how someone might identify. What you're talking about is different.

"Vanity pronouns?" Really?

2 years ago | Likes 264 Dislikes 0

Inventing words/terms to avoid the trap of their stupidity. E.G. They finally realised that pronouns are indeed a normal part of the English Language, but still need to demonise the use of them outside of their accepted criteria. Thus... "Vanity pronouns".

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey, at least they aren't demonising all kinds of pronouns outright anymore, meaning some of them finally understood what the word means and that it's virtually impossible to build sentences without them.
Baby steps.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That bit about "because you list your pronouns you're obviously lying about them" is... yeah... Some people could just drop out of the human race entirely and we'd all be better off.

2 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 2

Ah, yes, the old "Whoever smelt it, dealt it". A childhood favorite.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Guarantee the person who's calling it "vanity" also gets super insulted if you misgender them - suddenly a pronoun isn't vain, it's just part of who you are? Weird

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

NSFW Tbh, I do chuckle whenever I see someone write "she/her/they" or "he/him/they" as their Slack pronouns at work because the "they" is only something that needs to be specified if you don't want to be referred to by male or female pronouns. But it's pointless to append it to gendered pronouns because it's the "global" pronoun, as it were. But I don't say anything to people that do do that because, honestly, who the fucks cares.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 13

This hurts no one and takes zero energy and you're uptight about it.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

There's people out there that actually prefer "they" but will accept their AGAB pronouns too. That's different from people who prefer their AGAB (or any other gender) pronouns, who likely won't list "they" in their bio.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I have a child who's AFAB who prefers "they", but will also accept "he". So there's a case of being non-binary but preferring the not-assigned-at-birth gendered pronoun, if a gendered pronoun is used at all. For example they went to a sleepaway camp this summer, which didn't have mixed cabins. But they allow nb kids to choose the cabin they were most comfortable in, and my kid chose the boys' cabin. The counselors called them "they", but a lot of the kids said "he" and my kid's fine with it.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It may be an indicator that the person has a more complex relationship with gender :) perhaps you could ask one of them about it sometime and hear how they explain it?

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

*as someone who uses she/they pronouns at work and has a complex relationship with gender

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Can I (not op) ask you about it now?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes! Everyone's answer will surely be different, but for me I don't feel as though gender is relevant to my identity at all. At the same time, I recognise that's not true for the majority of other people, who will find that difficult to factor in to addressing me. Most of the time I think of myself as "agender", but find I don't mind too much about other people gendering me, since I understand that's linguistically natural to do and no offence is meant.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I look sorta androgynous so I tend to get a mixture of pronouns thrown at me, or people switching between pronouns partway through a conversation by new folk. On the other hand, many of my colleagues know me as a "she" from before I started questioning. So I hope giving pronouns will make people who don't know more comfortable in talking to me, longer term colleagues the idea that something is changing, and me less likely to have to deal with people getting confused about my gender all time.

I get why they'd want to engage in 'discussion' with those posters, but I can't help thinking of the phrase "like wrestling with a pig, you get covered in shit and the pig enjoys it", there's no good outcome to be had, they're extremely unlikely to be enlightened or move from their position. And seeing as that's the shithole twitter, chances are the whole reason they're there is to stir things up

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

its on her social media, so its just more engagement. upvote, downvote, post a hateful comment, you interact with something, its all more engagement for your post.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it's important to engage bigoted people, in as constructive a manner as possible. Those attitudes fester when we leave those people alone or treat them like enemies. Imagine the love and goodwill you'd feel for that person if they were your family member, and try to help them in that same way.

When we refuse to engage people with different worldviews, we contribute to a more adversarial society, where everyone feels more willing to undermine democracy in order to defeat the other side.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Allowing idiocy to go uncalled out has largely shaped the modern American Political landscape, aren’t you fucking tired of this?

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Personally, I only really engage in those types of discussions if I believe there is a benefit for others.

Sometimes, shitheel bigots make claims that SOUND plausible for those who don't know any better. In those situations, it's beneficial to call them out on it and prove them wrong, so they don't trick others into a slippery slope to thinking like them.

Sometimes, it's also just worth calling them out on it and showing clearly that their bullshit is not considered acceptable.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I doubt there's any measurable benefit on the internet/twitter scale though. The other side also has to be receptive to change, rather than taking a platform to broadcast their thoughts (which twitter is) where they're mostly doing 'hit and run' posts/replies where they say their piece and move on. If they're getting pushback on their views I doubt many stay until they reach a conclusion 'win/lose the discussion because they're right/wrong' and one of them changes their position

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think if that was the case most forums where you can do any form of replies would be very short lived as they'd quickly serve their purpose then become redundant

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feel like it's quite difficult to definitively measure. It may have impacted other people who silently viewed it. It may chip away at the person on the other end. Sure, one interaction like this likely won't mean much to them, but if they keep running into this wall, maybe at some point, they'll at minimum keep their mouth closed or at best actually change their mind. Not holding out for that, but normalizing things does have value.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*Pokes head out of the vile swamp bog whence I was spawned" The problem is that a lot of cisgender people don't want to switch up their pronoun game and won't be convinced by calling them out of their bullshit anymore than kids will become gay by seeing gay people. https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1043012-dont-look-at-them-ricky *hisses as the light burns my eyes and sinks back into the bog*

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think the idea is to normalize the inclusion of pronouns even on cis-gendered bios. If people get used to the fact that it's just something everyone does, then people who need it can opt in without drawing attention to themselves.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Culture changes with the old people following the old version die. Few people change. Some do. Most don't. Good luck to us all. None of us are getting out of this alive.
