That's called a barber chair and it kills people. The faller didn't front notch and then back cut, he just back cut and so the intact fibers spread upward rather than tearing across their grain. The fire is an extra factor.
My cousin in law died that way. Blow right to the head. I did so much extra studying on proper tree cutting techniques and situations the first time I cut one down after that

Is there a chance the knowledge of the internal fire is what guided a choice not to notch? Generally, I agree with you - notch first. But I've never fell a Balrog's Tree before.
Im no professional, I've felled a couple easy trees on my property. But I'm also a MechE and all the strength of the trunk is around the circumference not the center, which is where the fire is burning. So definitely want to follow the same instructions and notch.
I'm pretty sure the fire inside was known - it was visible when they made any cut, i'm sure (fresh air etc). If anything, i'd expect them to notch with MORE priority than less.

Thank you! I'm learning about bore/plunge cuts in an effort to avoid this. I have a lot of dead trees I need to cut and some of them look sketchy.
