I would rip the edges of the map off to "add authenticity" and remove the compass and scale

I like it, but it bothers me that the middle of the compass is not at a grid intersection

It's a technique commonly used to "age" paper.

Not far off probably. In school we'd use tea bags and dab them onto the paper to give them the feel/look of being old.
