Shakespeare Anglicized about 2,500 words that we still commonly use today. He got them from Latin, Greek, Old English, French, Italian, and German. Many words, like the name "Jessica," he straight up invented because the dictionary hadn't been invented yet and you could get away with that sort of fuckery.

Happy 454th, Willie!

Don't forget "assassin"

How I feel when I listen to Aesop Rock

Just because his plays are our first recorded examples of words does not mean he invented them. Audiences had to understand him.

Last time I saw this, there was a reminder that Shakespeare didn't invent all these words. Some, maybe, but they weren't written until him.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Admittedly, we don't know that he *invented* all of them. Other people might have been using them, but just didn't write them down. Or 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

they wrote them down, but nobody cared and just threw it out, because they weren't William Shakespeare. 2/2

just a thought; Samuel Johnson lived 200 years AFTER Shakespeare. but he's still "surprised" by some of these words? ok then...

What's funny is that the other guy, Samuel Johnson, is considered a greater contributor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Johnson

Yeah, it's not like there is a word tree, where you pick words off of. (Or is there??)

+1 why don't they teach things like this initially to get younger students more involved in Shakespeare. I know I would have been

Because it's mostly lies. They're memes not a reference book. I'd take this into mind when you see those "true facts" dumps as well.

I'm sorry I should have stated not this post exactly. All I meant that I wish my teachers used interesting antidotes when studying a subject

The problem with anecdotes is they're often apocryphal.

The word "elbow" existed in those days. People were aware of the bendy bit on you arm. The novel thing Shakespeare did was use it as a verb.

Also, and I'm no meteorologist so don't quote me, but I don't think "Jessica" is in the dictionary.

What as in "I'll elbow your anus until it bleeds" like that?
