Ive always said “make friends with your bartender, no matter what”. Meet Bob, the 83 year old bartender at the oldest bar in Fullerton. I went into the bar for the second time in my life to find maybe one or two other people minding their own business, made my way to the bar was greeted by what seemed like a very subdued slow old gentleman who didn’t seem to want to talk or be a part of much of anything at first. All that changed as soon as I ordered my whiskey and started asking him questions about life, alcohol , the town my grandparents, parents , and partially I grew up in. He proceeded to tell me about his time as a GI stationed in London, bartending at famous Hollywood bars with A list celebrity’s, when he worked at the the now demolished Sands casino in Vegas way back in 1960 while they filmed the original oceans 11 and he served and hung out with all the stars, how he uses “Uver” every night because he can’t see enough to drive at night any more, all the way to bartending here the last 20 years. We need more people like Bob. Cheers to you Bob , and cheers to everyone else

You know I've never met a bartender. I bet they're interesting people.
BrianMFTurner
well, I'm gonna go meet Bob. I really have nothing better to do than grab a pint.
Spaghettip
Bob looks like a Bill.
ElessarThorongil
As a bartender, bless you fellas and this post. +1

I also work in a bar. Worked in the Service industry for the past 10 years (26 now ). It’s a big plus when people are genuine and talk to yo
SnxLorde
wish my fav pub didn't close down, miss talking to that waitress/barkeep every week.
AnonymouslyGratifying
I was a waitress once and our bartender was an alcoholic narcissist. He threw fruit in my face once in front of a full bar.

Cheers Bob

His hands look amazing for an 83 year old

Went to Japan visiting friend who knew really classy hidden away bar. We all became great friends with bartender who invited us back for 1/2
Bloodboar
Drink tasting. He had a dozen bottles that cost hundreds for a glass. drank all night and we only paid £15 each. It was the first time 2/3
Bloodboar
He had anyone talk to him and include him in the night. That's a night ill never forget all because we showed him common decency
snotwasabi
one of the best bars around.

I am constantly amazed at how hard it is to find a competent bartender these days. You’re lucky to have found Bob.
cedarcomb
He looks like the Ian Holm version of Bilbo Baggins.
minqapoc
One of my best friends is a bartender. So i can scratch that from my list.

We gotta go @hockeyfighter69
HockeyFighter69

"he didn't seem to want to talk so I asked him lots of questions"

Half the friends you make as a kid are through being persistent and annoying. I doubt that changes in adulthood, we're just...
Spaghettip
Less inclined to bother as anxiety creeps up on us.
kramnadroj
Yeah, Jesus that would kill me. Talking about life? Christ, kill me now.
LiberalismIsaDisease2020
Then the old man sold him a line of BS so well, he bragged about it. *insert "are we the baddies" gif

I wonder what it was like going from a Gastroenterologist in London to being a bartender.
owowowcrampcrampcramp
Isn’t the Continental Room kinda across from the train station? Grew up there too.. went to St Mary’s and Sunny Hills.
Aronaf
Right across the the street from the train station
czbeardly
There is nothing like coming in to your favorite bar, and before you have made your way to the bar, the bartenders has served up a cold pint

Another local here, grew up in the O.C area and now live in Corona. An upvote for something local.
tpinedasd1337
Small joy that I know the area.

Had my first legal drink there when I was at CSUF.

I got my undergrad at CSUF and love Hopscotch in downtown Fullerton

My wife went there. Great school. CSULB up in here.

Hey I’m going to CSUlB next year as a freshman :D

Nice! What’s your major? If you can’t find parking, just go to the northwest side of campus. Lemme know if you want more tips or have Q’s.
Notyourhomie
I’m admitted as pre-microbio and thank you for the offer! I don’t have any questions right now but I’ll let you know :D

@OP not sure if you live in CA or were visiting, but go to The Alley in Newport Beach and see Mike - legendary man - been there 55 years.
crookedcook360
I lived in OC for a few years, met both Mike and Bob. Both awesome dudes.
Aronaf
Grew up in huntington (currently 26) and spent way too much time at goat hill tavern. Needed to branch out

Ahhh the memories of DTF. Former Back Alley bartender.

Continental room is great a Downtown Fullerton (DTF). Too bad shit gets to crazy on Thursdays.
Aronaf
Wasn’t too bad tonight. Last time I was there it was a Tuesday night late. Crazy doesn’t start till 8pm when the ask comes in.

The art of casual conversation: a great way to meet and connect with real folks. Lots of his generation have great stories.
RagnarokBear
But we'd all rather just stare at our phones...
MisterMustardd
I have to agree. Some of the best conversations I've ever had were in a crap old school drinking establishment during the a.m.
spookyu
I'll say it. So many people wear headphones constantly now, can't strike up conversation like that. I know I sound like a grouchy old man...
spookyu
Which I get it and respect it, that's a signal that ya don't want to talk, but a lot is also lost by not being willing to risk conversation.
TheEmeraldProphylactic
Try speaking like a normal human being, with ADD. My words and thoughts are a stream of irrepressible bullshit
Taazar
Someone asks you something and when you think of something to reply with you realise you're mouth has already spewed a bunch of made up bs
TheEmeraldProphylactic
Oh no, I don’t make anything up, I’m not an embellisher. I just talk a lot of waffle about distantly related (or not) subjects and ideas
RalphtheMagnif
I have a similar issue in that I am very vocal with my thoughts and I constantly worry that I push others away by being so forthcoming with
RalphtheMagnif
them
TheEmeraldProphylactic
Yup, sometimes it’s like autopilot. I just come round, and I’m in the middle of talking absolute rubbish. I’ve always favoured written word
RalphtheMagnif
I get that. I have a lot of presence too so when I start going on at length it shuts other people down and closes off opportunities to get
RalphtheMagnif
along with others. By trying to talk I shut people out of my life and if that isn't depressing I don't know what is
