My bq has non-removable battery too. It saves space and honestly all my batteries have outlived my phones, although it feels kinda wrong.

Nope. Newer generation galaxy phones got rid of removable batteries. I miss them.

This is exacerbated by trying to make the batteries so thin. The problems with the insulation, for example, would be less with thicker tape.

Yup. It's silly, but it's fashion. Makes them weak and vulnerable. An extra 2mm makes no real difference except in engineering solidity.

2 mm is huge. I often struggle to get just 1 mm of clearance for my projects

In aesthetics terms, yes. But most users, if their phone gradually got thicker over a few weeks would never notice.
