So many people have cameras and so many people have social media outfits that have monetized short videos like this, that I wonder how many cars are involved in incidents like this and are doing it on purpose, knowing that it's being filmed, and make their money off those social media sites? Let them file the police report, don't let them know you have dash-cam, submit the footage after they've given their story; make sure they get caught in the lie .

Was a thing decades ago in Germany. Also exorbitant repair bills, repair never done, next 'accident' with the supposedly A-OK car, next bill. Insurances caught up eventually and now any suspicious series of accidents will be assessed by a surveyor. So you can pretty much do that trick once with each car.
Why would the insurance company pay more than the car is worth? If anything, I hear about people in genuine accidents receiving a sub par payment, not covering the actual value of the car.
Germany, insurances actually have to pay money here. Usually the worth of a car is simply calculated by type and age. So if e.g. the engine is on it's last stretch the car might might be only scrap metal while the list says there are still several thousands in it. See my other answer, insurances got a little more cautious.

Not necessarily where it took place but I would assume possibly nearby. Seeing as the video is over two years old now I bet someone has already found all this out by now.
Given how many crazy and uninsured drivers are in my state I should probably look into a dashcam. Really wish carmakers would just start embedding that next to their front-facing IR safety cams and just make the backup camera passively record the rear view even when not in reverse.

Then I bought a new car and gave my car to my wife (with the cam) and three days into driving my new car there was an accident right in front of me. Fortunately it didn't involve me, but man, did that suck to suddenly not have a dash cam.

Three years later, a guy driving a truck threw it in reverse at a railroad crossing because he didn’t want to wait for the train, and he smacked into me despite me laying on my horn. The dash cam exonerated me.
That is awesome and exactly the reason I bought one. Fucking drunk driver rear ended me. I also was not at fault but it opens your eyes to how easy an accident can happen and how it's nice to have proof. I've had my new car for a year now and haven't been able to afford another dash cam but it's on the list.

I don't disagree, but I absolutely hate taking a drink and hearing "distracted!" Lol. One time I was parked taking a lunch and watching YouTube and the camera said distracted like 4 times.
And with a reasonably modern car (impossible to see in this case), you wouldn't even need the dashcam, as the internal logger would record whether you had been driving forward or in reverse. Granted, getting that logger data usually requires a court order.
Tesla is one of the few that will record footage for free if you provide a usb drive. So e other manufacturers like BMW offer it as a paid upgrade or subscription. But most don't offer anything despite having cars covered in cameras.

As someone who was once the neutral witness to one of these scams, that driver likely jumped back in their car and bolted the second they realized they weren't gonna get away with their ploy.
So when I first got the dashcam in my truck, some idiot backed into me in a target parking lot. yelling was had by all, cops were called, cop asked for his side. What he told the cop was *PURE* Fiction. I just listen quietly. Cop turns to me for my side and I just calmly said "Would you like to see the video" and the other guy went WHITE.
Lying to the cops during an investigation is apparently "obstruction of justice". ;-)
Not video but audio related. I live in a state where if one party on a phone call is aware it's recording it's legal. My dad had work done on a truck and the guy fucked it all up. After about a month of back and forth with this guy my dad finally buys a recorder (landlines era) and tells the guy he's going to take him to court. The guy starts yelling about how he's going to break the truck more and say it was all like that to start with.
My dad doesn't say anything and takes him to court. My dad's lawyer presents the tape, and they all listened to it. The guy ended up having to pay back all the money my dad previously paid him plus the estimated cost of new damage. And lost his business license. My dad used the money to buy a new(er) truck.
I love stories like this. Fucking people who think they can get away with shit not realizing that there are other people in the world. I record all work calls (also living in a single-party-consent state) just in case...also because i suck at notetaking...

There's more footage that makes your facebook friends smarter than you in this case. The truck initiated the incident (as far as we can tell, anyway). He got out of his truck and tried (failed) to smash the car's window.
Let's pretend that we're true. None of that would make reversing into the truck the right thing to do. Also I said comments. Not my friends. And the cherry on top we now have a perfect example of exactly what I was saying. Thank you.

Also when those idiots speed up to avoid letting someone merge or something and cause an accident then post it to stroke their own ego pretending to be a victim see that tons on those compilation vids
The scariest thing I've seen in a bit was the comments on one where the dashcam driver cancels a lane change to not hit a car coming up inside, meaning that a car which had decided to illegally pass, on a shoulder full of construction cones, that ended in a barrier, slammed into said barrier. The number of comments about the dashcam driver "napping in the fast lane" and "needing to be decisive", even though she had the right of way, and the other driver was on a SHOULDER, were truly horrifying.
